After going through the effort of signing him surely he was at least worth a look?

Nahki Wells

Post by ClaretTony » Wed Jan 01, 2020 4:28 pm

Been woefully out of form recently apparently and lost his place in the side. Back in today, they lead 6-0 and he's bagged himself a hat trick.

Not suggesting we should recall him or anything like that, but good to see one of our current players doing well again.

Although I thought it was a puzzling signing at the time, he didnt get a chance here to prove himself

I'm led to believe he would have been our 4th choice should we have managed to shift Vydra out.
Would certainly have given us a different option to launching it, although Vydra is that but wont be given a chance either

Yeah, you might be right. I'd try and offer him another year although expect he'd sooner leave.

We'd be mad to offer him a new deal, and he'd be madder to sign it.

Not really, with it looking likely to be in the bottom 3 soon. He's proven at Championship level and wouldn't cost us a signing fee as he's already ours.

Why would he want to sign after not being given a chance for 3 years? Nothing will change even if we go down, Barnes and Wood are nailed on starters every week.

Off topic in terms of the player but another worrying sign, anyone see the Peter Crouch Podcast? In it he reckoned he had another one maybe two years in him but felt degraded at his last club which was enough for him to retire, complaining he never got the opportunity to start a game yet he had 90 mins in him. Felt like he had been treated like a 'head on a stick' to be thrown on for the last twenty in the vain hope he might head something in. Obviously I recognise it's just his opinion and the manager doesn't have the opportunity to respond to his claims but a bad reflection on BFC. Add to that, having Liverpool fans commenting on the Ben tackle yesterday being just like Gomez incident, again opinions but it's not the same press we used to get as 'plucky little Burnley'. Our media Manager appearing very defensive at the moment also. Feeling the same vibe most of you seem to be feeling which is there's something not quite right going on but difficult to put your finger on it.

Premier league wages and gets to live in London so his family will be happy. Regular football.

The lads winning at life.

Should obviously be used as a bargaining chip for Eze. Bet you nobody at the club has thought of that though.

Bargain chip of what sort? He's out of contract soon enough and has been allowed out on loan for the last season and a half to QPR. His value to us must be sky high?

We signed him injured for £5m despite his lack of appearances at the time for Huddersfield
We loaned him to QPR for some bizarre reason didnt include an obligation to buy at the endbof his loan
QPR couldnt afford to buy him so rather than sell him to interested clubs we loaned him back
In all another classic piece of blundering in the transfer market

We were hoping to lose Vydra, so we kept onto Wells knowing if we got rid of Vydra we still had a 4th choice with being different to the other 3.

The fact we couldnt shift Vydra after turning down Wells offers was just tough luck, we had to move him on and by then a loan was the only option.

Regards Eze , I mentioned him to Dyche in October, and his reply was "oh so we should be signing him because he's doing well in the league below"

He's by far the standout attacking midfielder, and IMO ticks every single box, and exactly the type we should be targeting.
Youd think with Dyche being mates with Warburton and us helping them out with Wells, we could strike up some deal

The whole situation is quite mind boggling. We have been crap for the last eight games, hardly able to get a shot on goal yet Vydra and Wells who are both capable strikers aren't and have never been considered. It really does make you wonder about our transfer policy and does beg the question. Were they both panic buys who SD didn't want.

Hmm that’s interesting. I’m sure both Chris Wood and Matej Vydra did well in the league below...?

That seems to be our metric for buying strikers of late.

Our players are exhausted.......with the extra games over xmas it is exaggerated.
We might have done better by picking games we saw as winnable & resting key players for the others.
All that is in the rear view mirror now!....Time to get behind the lads, i can't see how Booing etc does any good, the players looked tired & nervous yesterday.

Add to this Woan losing it with fans on several occasions and Steve Stone's suspension. I think Dyche has built this club as his own and there is little accountability once you are in that bubble. I know Stone has been suspended but his demenour and attitude at games before this has been commented on by many and until this he was pretty much allowed to shout and scream at will.

Another worry is Mawson leaving. Could Pope follow? De Gea doesnt seem the player he was and a big club would still snap him up....win win for UTD getting Pope in at much reduced wages and to me not far behind talent wise at present

In that podcast though he also mentions what a great support Dyche has been since retiring so that headline which I had seen earlier myself seems to be trying to be negative towards us but once you read or listen to the whole thing its just an ex player spouting off. He hadnt played at Stoke for 12 months before coming to us so the rot had set in long before coming to us. Plus he has had SD on his Amazon show so he mustnt be holding a grudge.

To try new things though take time. I believe most fans are understanding and patient if they see a plan in place. What you said about 45 mins is exactly how Dyche thinks. He changes sides for cup games and then we struggle. Its obvious wholesale changes is going to affect the performance on the pitch. Look at Fulham, Villa (before playing us). Even training together week in and week out isnt the same as playing competitively. But he uses these players poor performances in cup matches as an excuse to go back to the same 11 and an explanation as to why they arent being pushed hard enough for the shirt

Wells wasn’t exactly tearing trees up when he was here. If he was anywhere near up to it he would still be in and around the first team. Maybe the set up at QPR suits him better, good luck to him. But whatever happens with him it won’t be at Burnley.

It wasn't a written article Mi'Lord (misrepresented?!?)
90 second video on BBC site. No mention of how much he respects Dyche etc.
Video herehttps://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/av/50962040
Not sure why you'd have problem with the word misrepresented. It turns out it's very apposite here since the BBC video that you watched (and linked) is a misrepresentation of the BBC (written) article on the same page that gives a fuller account of what Crouch said and thinks about Dyche.
In the fuller account he is very complimentary about Dyche.
""[Dyche] has a tough exterior, but I've found him to be such a top man. I still speak to him now because I shared something with him. I was going through a tough time with the retirement and he was first class with me.

"I can't thank him enough."

Also I don’t understand why people are calling for him to play for us. He just isn’t very good - he scores goals playing in a very creative championship side, against championship defences.

Sheffield utd were a very creative championship last season...they're doing pretty well against premiership defences with a few journey men...tonight might or might not shed some light on how good their former championship players cope. :D

Read the article, he went on to contradict himself really as he said the Sean Dyche is a great manager, a top bloke and that he still speaks to him now. Surely has to be the managers decision when to use the player, therefore Crouch must have been treated like a head on a stick by Sean Dyche. Not sure I would still be in touch with someone who I felt humiliated me.

Add fo the list of ex footballers who talk sh ite.

Just seen the comments above.

Note to self, read the full thread in future.
