Quite possibly this was the performance of the season so far, 5-2 away at West Ham, a team that had won their previous seven home games on the bounce. Plenty of Burnley fans there to see it too.

No Jimmy Mac but Ian Lawson, as ever, proved a worthy deputy and scored a couple. Mac, by his own admission, should not have played in the previous match against Man Utd when only half fit.

Was also a West Ham team that had taken recent hammerings - 6 against Blackburn and 7 against Sheffield Wednesday. From top of the league in November, they had a poor return after that and didn't win many games.

Interesting reference to Colin McDonald in the linked article having played an 'A' team game at Gawthorpe as part of his long term recovery from a broken leg. There was a massive buzz around town that his return to the first team was imminent, but ever so sadly it never happened. Colin struggled on for a while but never recovered full fitness and finally left Burnley some months later. Colin was arguably our greatest ever keeper and at the start of his international career with England when the broken leg happened. Wonderful to see his photo at Gawthorpe just recently with our current goalkeepers, a special occasion for all concerned, including you I believe, Tony. Was he 80 years young at the time?
