Right back options

Post by ksrclaret » Thu Jan 02, 2020 6:17 pm

I think most fans can agree that our right back position seriously needs looking at during this window. Neither Bardsley nor Lowton are good enough for our level, so, despite the line from Dyche that we're unlikely to sign anybody, is there anyone out there we think could be good for us?

I'll start with three suggestions

James Tavernier - Rangers - King of Assists in Scotland, 28 years old

Nathaniel Clyne - Liverpool - again 28 now, will surely be wanting football since he won't be displacing the brilliant Alexander-Arnold anytime soon. Wages though.

Jonjoe Kenny - Everton - currently on loan at Schalke and seems to be doing well, Everton have Sidibe and Holgate ahead of him, and at 22 could inject the youth and pace we're crying out for.

The link with Bogle at Derby persists. Dyche doesn't tend to stray too much from his original targets if he fails to land them first time round. I wouldn't be surprised if we tried again...

A quick, skillful and energetic full back from what I've seen (used to be a winger) so would offer us a bit more going forward on the other side from Taylor. Maybe not as solid at defending but I'm sure that can be worked on.

Am I right in thinking we were linked with the Everton lad before too?

James at Chelsea-came on against us as a late sub.Great prospect-tough and quick. Potential loan-spent last year at Wigan

Another player linked in the summer along with Kenny and Bogle was Joakim Mæhle from Genk.
I'd like us to look at Youcef Atal from Nice.

Surely despite Dyche’s comments we will be making a couple of signings, especially if Drinkwater is going back! Tavernier would be a good signing, I’ve seen Bogle mentioned a lot but not seen much of him. We’re going to be desperate for a CM if DD goes back though.

We've known for a while Bardsleys contract is up this summer. No excuses for not having some potential targets lined up.

All interesting suggestions but if they’re young or foreign (or both), forget it. What we need is another Erik Pieters. Experienced solid pro, good attitude, a trier, tried and tested in British football. Residing in the Staffs / Cheshire area a bonus.

Hendrick is worth a try at right back, better bet than the two we've got?

If we switched to 3-5-2 (or 5-3-2 if it fits the Dyche defense first mantra) then Taylor (or Brady) would be ideal left sided wing backs. Hendrick or JBG could probably do the job on the right (or even Lennon I suppose). Tarks, Mee Gibson be the 3 CHs.

Would be better if we had a quicker more skillful RB though as neither Bardsley or Lowton fit the bill (IMHO).

Wouldn’t touch Tavernier with a barge pole. His assists and penalty stats mask his inability to defend. Championship footballer.

Bogle not good enough (yet)
Tavernier not good enough.
John joe Kenny not good enough for Everton.
Jon Flanagan never been any good
As for the suggestion Hendrick at right back, seriously I despair.

Can’t believe I’m seeing 3-5-2 / 5-3-2 shouts again. It does not work, it smacks of desperation, we don’t have the players to play that system.

Pick one of our 17/18 4-3-3 or our standard 4-4-2 and make a signing (or two if possible) this January. That’s literally all I believe we need to stay up. Then go to work on a serious overhaul in summer.

Southampton are linked with the Danish right back Mæhle who we had an interest in during summer. Pace, power, and young. Surely that’s a sensible option.

Atal I would imagine a bit above our level, Mæhle probably about right.

Not sure why it matters if Kenny is good enough for Everton or not. He'd be a decent signing for us.

Don't know much about the 1st 2 listed . Thinking of Kenny and Everton, what about Coleman(short term)?
I took Flanagan to be a joke.
Jeff as an 'overlapping' full back, wow!!!

Clyne would have been a shout, however he is coming back from acl, so would need to becareful and time to get back to match fitness.

Foyth at Tottenham is a potential loan as is James at Chelsea, however both are young and to an extent a gamble, however Dyche went with McNeil at this stage last season.

Dyche’s signings tend to be experienced so might go left field for a right back in Antonio Valencia, although again has had fitness issues.

Everton are not much better than us and kenny was third choice behind Coleman and Holgate. Would be no better than what we have now.

Although it is self evident we could do with a good right back, I think we need to be spending all our efforts in finding two, or even three, midfielders: that's where our real problems lie.

A 22 year old at the level of our current full backs would be decent given that you'd hope they'd improve over the next 5 years.

Chelsea's Reece James would have been a good shout. Unfortunately, since Frank Lampard returned as Manager in the close season, RJ has found himself getting game time. That ship has sailed now.
