That's unforgivable at test level, and not the 1st time in this match either.

If all the no balls had been called then S Africa would be in the lead already.

Re: South Africa v England 2nd Test
Why are the umpires not doing their job,it's only when a wicket falls that the no-ball is flagged up,it's not like they're marginal VAR type calls either, the bowlers are overstepping by a long way.

Re: South Africa v England 2nd Test
183-4 Elgar had a mad moment and holed out for 88,but still South Africa's day so far,12 overs until the new ball, and that has to pay big dividends for England,or this game will start slipping away,Jimmy's bpwled well today for little reward, but the attack looks powderpuff on this surface.

198-5 De Kock gifted England his wicket,England hanging in by the skin of their teeth, need to finish off the lower order quickly now,as the lead's only 70.

We could eke out a first innings lead here. Not sure anyone would've predicted that at this time yesterday.

We have bowled very well from what I have seen.
They did have their best partnership while i was watching the football though.

Re: South Africa v England 2nd Test
Yes a good day ultimately for england, need to knock these last couple over early tomorrow, and then somehow bat for the whole day,it was looking grim during the Elgar/VDD partnership, but one false shot from Elgar and SA collapse just as easily as England, the 35 runs Pope and Anderson added for the final wicket could turn out to be critical,if it's goes down to the wire in the last innings.
From this position England should be able to set a challenging target for the 4th innings, and the pitch is already showing signs of wear,so for once it'll be a happy visiting dressing room tonight.
A final nod to Ben Stokes how many worldies does this lad have to his name, and he showed great temperament after dropping the chance the previous delivery, sign of a guy in the zone,he was able to forget it and focus on the next ball.
On the evidence of these tests so far, both these sides are miles behind Australia, who've racked up the runs again in Sydney, double century for Labuschagne, and a mere 63 for Steve Smith on this occasion.

I think a few people speculated that Jimmy was finished when he broke down and couldn’t get back during the Ashes. Think he has answered those people in some style..

It’s going to be a dilemma how to manage Anderson going forward.
Clearly still our best bowler but how many times a series do you play him at his age?

Re: South Africa v England 2nd Test
52-1 at lunch, definitely England's session, lead's nearly 100,that's a lot with 9 wickets in the hutch, hope Sibley can go on this afternoon and notch his first test match 50 at least,he's had a few starts over this winter, but hasn't managed to make a major score yet.
What's too many for the Boks to chase 4th innings?,i'd have thought 250,but i'm sure England would like more just to close the door completely.
On Jimmy, missing the Ashes might have been a blessing in disguise, you can't expect him to play every test at his age,but clearly the selectors were never going to drop him,if Jofra's fit for the 3rd test and the series is evenly poised at 1-1,it'll be a tough call whether to play both or not,but that's where they earn their money.

If both are going to bowl 83mph then Jimmy is 5 times the bowler Archer is. Leave Archer out until he can bowl 90 plus again.tiger76 wrote: ↑Sun Jan 05, 2020 10:50 amOn Jimmy, missing the Ashes might have been a blessing in disguise, you can't expect him to play every test at his age,but clearly the selectors were never going to drop him,if Jofra's fit for the 3rd test and the series is evenly poised at 1-1,it'll be a tough call whether to play both or not,but that's where they earn their money.

Re: South Africa v England 2nd Test
Denly gone for 31,good effort but again he didn't go on,that Sibley/Denly partnership has put England in the box seat though, lead of almost 150 and they should be aiming to double that at least.
I'd tend to agree about Archer he's looked jaded the whole winter, and if England are going to get the best out of him,he's better used sparingly, and in short bursts when he does play,i still maintain he was overbowled in NZ,hence why he's having injury problems and lacking pace on the SA tour.

If Archer's fit, they'll play him. Curran or Bess will be omitted. No chance they'll leave out Anderson or Broad if fit.
It's not great having a batting line-up with 2 No. 11s + Broad though.

Re: South Africa v England 2nd Test
Agree on the short bursts, should be similar to the way the Aussies had Johnson tearing through our order when he was used in 3/4 over bursts. Wasting him over bowling him, won't have any longevity that way.tiger76 wrote: ↑Sun Jan 05, 2020 1:08 pmDenly gone for 31,good effort but again he didn't go on,that Sibley/Denly partnership has put England in the box seat though, lead of almost 150 and they should be aiming to double that at least.

Away from the Archer situation Dom Sibley is having an excellent knock. Shown consistently at county level he has the mentality and patience as well as skill to bat big numbers and occupy the crease for a long time, hopefully he will be given enough time to adapt to test level for the long term.

Re: South Africa v England 2nd Test
England's best day overseas for a long time, all the top 4 made contributions, but yes the standout was Sibley, hope he can complete his ton in the morning,he deserves it for his application alone,Root made runs again, shame about the 2 late wickets, but i'm sure England would have accepted a 250+lead,and 6 wickets in hand at the start of play today, the platform's been set for victory it's down to the bowlers now,at least they managed to get their feet up for the whole day, that'll be an advantage having them fresh and firing in the last innings for once,i guess England will bat sensibly for an hour tomorrow, let Sibley get his century all being well, and then throw the bat for an hour, time isn't an issue yet,but equally England don't want to find themselves having SA 7/8 down late on day 5,and running out of overs, given SA batting Elgar apart don't convince me they'll have the patience to last for 4/5 sessions on a wearing pitch,it shouldn't be an issue.
The bad news is Burns is likely to miss the Sri Lanka tour in March, the good news is if he and Sibley can nail down their test places, they're both young enough to be around for a good few years, and at last England might have a top order that you could have confidence in.

It’s been a major turnaround after the first day. We bowled really well with Anderson outstanding and then followed that up with some really good batting.

England playing test match cricket for a change, resolute batting and yet again Anderson picks up a five for!
A remarkable comeback, Jimmy oozes class, resolve and dedication.

Stokes taking the game away from S Africa, a quick 50 not out off 40 balls, Sibley a maiden century.

England doing a decent impression, at long last, of proper Test cricket!
Sibley grinds out a great maiden ton with it.
Garden full of roses at the mo. (red ones, of course).

At the risk of being called a curmudgeon after a great morning, why on earth are England still batting and refusing singles?? Puzzling.

England declare at 391/8 - Sibley 133 n/o
SA finish the day 89/1 - Elgar out for 34, Sibley with the wicket. SA need another 349 to win
edit: Whoops. That wasn't close of play

Re: South Africa v England 2nd Test
Strange decision by Root not to declare at lunch surely 420 was enough of a lead, tough with the ball for England, but SA don't have a lot of batting to come after Du Plessis, couple of early wickets in the morning, and victory should assured by mid-afternoon,the remains is this a one-off from this England team,or can they follow this victory,if it is a victory,in the next test, that's the challenge now, they've set the standard, now can they maintain those levels for the rest of the series.
