Whoever it usually comes along to chide people for raising eyebrows at this will doubtless be along to tell you off. Expect to be called some old white guy from the 1970s before midnight if previous is anything to go by...

“They” can call themselves whatever they want. I have no interest whatsoever in their desire to be different or their sexuality but for now I’ll stick with pricks.

Re: Word of the decade
Wtf does “ they” refer to? Are they talking in the 3rd person or is it just gay thing like frotting or felching ??
Re: Word of the decade
In the football world, it would be an incorrectly used 'Them'.

I'm surprised Ben Zimmer didn't frame it differently.

Re: Word of the decade
I'm getting old, so how does one use this version of "they" if the writing to someone or doing a blog for instance? Would I have had to change my opening line to:
They getting old
They is getting old
More importantly how would OK Boomers like me actually understand what they (as opposed to "they") were trying to say.
Having dyslexia is difficult enough without "they" idiots introducing a new form of speak into my old world.
I am really afraid I'm sound like my mother right now and that is definitely a scary thought!!

Re: Word of the decade
They would probably use “they’re”. In line with “He’s” and “She’s”.
Re: Word of the decade
In regards to refering to "Sam Smith" the Steve1956 standard is best I refer to "Sam Smith" as
KNOB
KNOB
