Be interesting to see how the second half of the season pans out compared to the outstanding first half for the U23s , now that as you say the 5 of them have gone out on loan

Three of those five have been pretty regular in the team while a fourth has played a good number of the games. It will make a difference but it is about development and the lads going out will benefit from getting first team while the players stepping up will benefit from getting games at u23 level.

It's a funny way of looking at it (IMO, of course) as if our 22year olds are playing "boys" football, and the Northern Premier is "mans" football :D

Forest name him on their twitter match commentary as he earned the Pen.

Under 23s

Lost 2-1 at Forest. An 67th minute penalty from Josh Benson being our only response to a 1st half penalty and a 63rd minute goal for them.

To be fair a lot of the regulars gone out on lone. Not sure what effect that has on the rest of the team and management confidence levels though? imagine if Dyche was told we have loaned out your best players get on with it. As long as something comes of these loaned out getting towards the first team then great, but team ethic for the U23 goes out the window and cant be good.

It's surprising but I don't think it's our best players that go out on loan.

When those kind of loans happen it's not not long until they are released. It's just getting them out of the way to give the next player a chance.

Really? Can't see that's the case at all. Jimmy Dunne had several loans (still with us), Ali Koiki went to Swindon last season (still with us). Four players have gone out to League Two clubs, I'd be very surprised if any of those are to get them out of the way and I'd be very surprised if they are released any time soon.

Not sure who you are referring to - an examples of under-23 players going out on loan in the circumstances you suggest?

Massanka, Anderson, C Long, Green, Conlan, Whitmore, Hendry, Howieson, Hewitt. There's more too but I know it I go too far back the fisty cuffs will come out for Howe and Blake.

When loaned out it is too prep them for "men's" football as they always say but the fact is they would be promoted to the first team if they were good enough to play for us.

I think we can get excited about prospects when they get into the team like McNeil, or when they are on loan in the championship but even then they may not be good enough.

I think the loans are just giving these lads the best chance to make a career for themselves at lower levels. If they do okay in league two when they are released by us they stand a better chance of earning a decent wage.

Two of the lads who have gone out to league clubs this year are in their first year at Burnley - some of those you mention had been here a long time. Not sure why you included Chris Long though, he was never a member of the u23 squad while Green was a different story altogether. Howieson and Hewitt had played in our first team, Anderson was well into his 20s by the time he left. I'll agree with Whitmore, Hendrie and Massanka though, the first two in particular. But I don't agree with your assumption that they are being shipped out on loan to get them moved on.

I'll let you throw the post back in my face if the likes of Phillips, N'Guessan, Cooney and Glennon do leave in the near future.

Its okay Tony I'm not here to throw anything back in your face. Its just my own opinion based on the past. Of course, like any Burnley fan I hope that I am wrong and that these lads show that they are good enough and do make it in our first team.

But I am also a realist, and I think that for them the chances are so low and stacked against them. I think for the club the loans are a "make it or break it" gesture, and a quick path to determine whether there's any chance of them impressing or not. If they were good enough I think ideally we would have them competing for places in the first team, but the gap is just too large.

The chances of these lads making it at even a low level are quite slim, players have gone on loan before and only been warming the bench. Sometimes they are unfortunate because of a managerial change, or injury, but it happens.

There's more examples too I am sure, I just can't think of any from the top of my head.

Its an improvement though and we are slowly heading in the right direction. If we can remain in the premier league and fund our youth system further hopefully we can develop a better reputation to attract more youth prospects and get them out on loan at higher levels. The ultimate aim with us being a premier league team, being loans in the championship.

Recently Chakwana and Fowler did very well for the youths but were not kept on, Fowler was a prolific scorer...but not good enough (apparently). Went to Fleetwood and got loaned out immediately.
