Burnley fans heading for Turf Moor one hundred years ago to see perhaps the best Burnley side of all time. No VAR required.

Looks to be a nice sunny day, perhaps it was the first game of the season against Bradford City. We lost 1-4 but it was the only defeat at home all season. Dad often talked about that game as being one the first he could remember as a little 'un.
Lost the next two away and then went on a 30 game unbeaten run before winning the First Division.

I love this sort of stuff. Are there any good sites that have collections of old Burnley pictures?
Worth noting that we lost 6 games that season though. Dyche’s fault.

Certainly has. How scruffy do we all look walking to the match compared to these gents? Wonder what they’d think if they could see us walking to the match in our jeans, trainers and replica kits?

Interesting question... I imagine that the average working class bloke would have significantly fewer clothing options than the man today.
I suspect that, even though their clothes were more formal than ours today, they would have been dirtier and more tatty. (Often homemade, I think.)
Those same guys in jackets and waistcoats would have been fascinated by our modern bright-coloured synthetic textiles, (faux) fur-lined hoods, and intriguing footwear!

they usually had two three piece suits, one for sunday best. they were very hard to clean as well. might have looked dapper, but quite a smell

You’d have been locked up if you turned up at the Turf wearing it back in the day.

Always amazes me how uncluttered the streets are in these pictures. There’s a sign every five yards now. Big step backwards. Great lampposts too.

Well there is a huge shadow of a house on the ground ... looks like a sunny day to me ?
But its definitely early in the year judging the angle of the shadow

The women in those days prided themselves on getting things clean. However much elbow grease was needed they would have supplied it. Anyone who smelled would have been practically shunned by their peers.

If you were walking down Yorkshire Street towards town from the Turf I think it used to go off towards the left of where the roundabout is now. If you walked down to the right I think that was Gunsmith Lane before you got to Church Street.

Got the wrong building when I first answered it. That single story building was the way into the cricket ground. Probably served sandwiches from it too.

just found a photo of the lane, but no idea how to post it. looks to be top end of bus station , opposite the Atlantis cafe. croft street . shows it as gunsmith place, not lane. my mistake.

Wouldn't it be fantastic if we still had the trams? Back then, I'm told (and before anyone suggests it, no I don't remember them) they weren't able to get up the hills so they only went part way up Manchester Road and Brunshaw Road.
