Bowie was indeed an original and an innovator. Loved 70's Bowie and probably mid 90's onwards but his 80's stuff suggests he died for a while and came back to life. As I always say music is subjective so no-one can ever say something is naff but for me his music around that period was totrally forgetable. Let's Dance sets my teeth on edge.

Having said that Hunky Dory and Ziggy Stardust are true works of genious.

Gypsy Rose Lee would have been 109. And hopefully retired!

Bassey is an amazing singer (or was, I haven't heard her in years) but unfortunately I am going to annoy many by saying that Elvis never did it for me. I'm sorry but I never saw what all the fuss was about. A fairly okay singer who made a few ripples when he first started out with his stage performances but otherwise...well, I suppose you had to be there. My favourite of his has to be the live version of Are You Lonesome Tonight when he can hardly sing for p!ss!ng his sides at his backing vocalists who appear to be far to hi in the mix. Now that is truly funny. A classic moment to be sure.

My gran would have been 118. Where are we going with this thread?

A truly classic moment for certain and I didn't know about Cissy Houston. There is no doubt he influenced people and he probably was outrageous as well for the time, who knows without him many a legend may never have taken up music. I suppose part of the problem for me is that although I am primarilly a rock music fan (although music in general has been a major part of my life) I never did like old style rock and roll. It was a tad before my time (although I was around) and my real interest in music came about from more classical stuff (which I still am very fond of) originally. The mid to late 60's really woke me up with the likes of the Who, the Kinks etc. Once the more psychedelic stuff came along I was away.

To be honest I don't totally dislike Elvis but what I do like is his more ballady stuff (a big up for In the Ghetto - great song actually).

I'm willing to bet that today's most celebrated birthday is taking place in N Korea.

I love the little hand clapping childlike dance he does when he gets excited (as per launching another leathal weapon). What kind of people rule our world and how the f*ck do they get to be in charge. I despair.
