Smart watches.
Hi everybody, I'm thinking of buying 1 & to be honest I'm not that familiar with them, I believe most work with android/apple, my budgets about £100, I'm just looking for recommendations ideally from people who use them & then I can do my own research before buying, thanks.

It depends what you want to use it for? Is it for recording fitness activity, if so, what? Or is it for notifications from your phone?

All of them things, I'm not interested in a esim 1, bluetooth operating radius is sufficient, thanks.1fatclaret wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2020 5:53 amIt depends what you want to use it for? Is it for recording fitness activity, if so, what? Or is it for notifications from your phone?
Re: Smart watches.
I have a Xiaomi Mi Band 4 - which isn't necessarily a smart watch but it does fitness tracking etc and notifications etc to my iPhone. It also has a real battery life of about 20 days between charging, and it also has a surprisingly accurate heart monitor that can monitor your heart rate every minute and give you a chart of you info along with your resting heart rate etc. I've had the earlier Mi Band 2 before this and that lasted 3 years (and is still working!) before I got the 4 about 6 months ago.
What I personally find frustrating is that there is no easy way to export your data, there are some tools but it's not great, so it depends upon what you want.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Fitness-Blueto ... 572&sr=8-3
the other downside is that you are logging all your data to a server in China, and conspiracy theorists will have a field day with that type of Big Data

Re: Smart watches.
Why do you need to export your data? If the watch is synced to the phone will the phone or the watch itself not display the data, I was looking at the xiaomi mi mix 5g as I know 5G will be available this year even though 5g & 4g will be transitional for awhile after until 4g is completely phased out.Zlatan wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2020 8:17 amI have a Xiaomi Mi Band 4 - which isn't necessarily a smart watch but it does fitness tracking etc and notifications etc to my iPhone. Only wanted to export so that I could manipulate the data myself in Excel etc and get some interesting charts, and so that I could pass onto my medical team. It does show all the data on the app.Jakubclaret wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2020 8:24 amWhy do you need to export your data? Fitbit Charge 3 currently £94 on Amazon.
Not the fanciest but good build quality and everything you need.

on iTunes and android - other half had an android phone for a while and the app was occasionally flaky for her. It also does fairly good sleep monitoring too, which again seems accurate as it correlates to my CPAP device for the quality of sleep etc.

Re: Smart watches.
Christ it’s a minefield with these watches . I bought a ticwatch pro first . It was fine and cheaper and had good reviews . Worth checking out . I finally stumped up arm and leg for a garmin but it’s fantastic as a GPS watch for outdoors .
If you want an everyday watch with smart features get an Apple Watch 3 . They are going cheap , new about 190 . Does everything your phone does . Calendar , reminders , fitness , messages , maps, they are nearer too much smaller than the hefty outdoor smart watches . Avoid cheap knock offs they disappoint and you’ll never use them .
The Apple Watch 3 is not much different from the latest Apple Watch 4 . Hard to spot the difference
Get in touch if you fancy the ticwatch

Re: Smart watches.
There a lot of good ones around without spending a fortune but steer well clear of the Fitbit HR. Absolute garbage. I have one and the same problem is happening to people all over the world (literally). The step counter is total garbage and on mine is consistently 20/25% out in overcount. It has some qualities like the heart rate monitor and time keeping for my workouts but I am on a Fitbit forum and the concensus from just about everone is if you want a step counter or calorie counter steer well clear. The company keep promising to get it right but are doing sod all. I don't know how they have haven't been sued before now for trade descriptions. Other Fitbit products are apparently fine but the HR should be shelved.
Incidentally I use for extremely high accuracy a couple of telephone apps that are both free to download (you can pay for extras but they are not really needed) and they are compatible for synchronicity. Pacer is the best step counter I know (but obviously you have to have your phone on you), I have tested this numerous times since I got it 2/3 years ago and it is accurate to within about half a dozen steps per thousand. To go with it I use My Fitness Pal which gives you anything you really need free (unless you are a fanatic) and synchs with the Pacer so you don't have to input steps. You can record food and nutritional values and it even gives you a breakdown of what you need to take in foodwise to lose/maintain/gain weight. When I first tried it I was shocked at how well it worked. You can also input any other excercise (other than steps because Pacer will do that autopmatically) like weight training (which I do) or swimming/football etc you name it and it will automatically calculate energy usage and input it into your daily stats.
The apps are free and smart watches generally tend to cost a bit, especially if you want a good one. I would suggest trying these before parting with your hard earned.

All depends on what you want it for . It’s touch screen which rules it out for me . When you’re in dirt and mud or wearing gloves touch screen is no good . Those big buttons are easier . If it’s for everyday fitness it should be ok.Jakubclaret wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2020 10:38 pmIs the initial feedback impressive or is it too early to say?

Without owning 1, I understand, ideal for clean warm environments such as a gym, out walking the dogs on a freezing cold night thru muddy fields not so ideal, thanks now I know not what to buy.Dixie Normous wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2020 10:54 pmAll depends on what you want it for . Re: Smart watches.
Hi mate - so far so good. It's been quite handy to see sleep patterns, stress level, steps, stairs, HR etc., and I've just done a couple of different types of exercise routines with it this week, both with success. I have two other watches which are much more expensive but aren't smartwatches like this - so I'll probably still wear these for most occasions but I can see this coming in handy for routines/gym/biking/walks/sleep etc. There also seems to be a lot of things which I've still got to get used to like it's own exercise routines for example, and online stuffJakubclaret wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2020 10:38 pmIs the initial feedback impressive or is it too early to say?

I have a Garmin Forerunner 35. It cost £94 from Amazon and has GPS built in. I got it for running but it also monitors steps, heart rate, sleep etc. It can used used for running, cycling, cardio, walking. The GPS can be used without a phone and you can update to Strava or the Garmin app when finished. The battery life is good and it doesn't take long to fully recharge. Iv'e been very impressed with it so far.

Re: Smart watches.
Garmin Vivoactive 3 owner of about a year and a half and very happy.
Cycling was my focus so needed something with inbuilt GPS so I could leave the phone at home. Since used it for swimming, treadmill, all links to Strava with really interesting data.
Good clear screen and with it round bezel it doesn't look like it's trying too hard to be a fitness watch.

Re: Smart watches.
I saw an old mate struggling through Burnley bus station with two huge and obviously heavy suitcases the other day. I said, ‘Have you got the time?’
He put down the suitcases and glanced at his wrist. ‘It's a quarter to six,’
I noticed he had a smart watch and said so.
‘Yeah, it's the best there is’, he said. He showed me that it did all the top smart watch stuff but it also had a load of other extra functions. It could project the screen onto a wall for watching movies, it had virtual surround sound. It could work out from your heart rate whether you needed to eat and what the meal should be for optimum energy. All the other functions would put Q from James Bond to shame. He said it was a development model his company were working on and there were very few about.
I asked if I could buy one.
‘Oh, no, it's not ready for sale yet; I'm still working on the bug fixes.’ He said.
I tried to persuade him to sell me his.
‘No, you don't understand; it's not ready’
‘I'll give you £500 for it!’ I said
‘It’s not really mine to sell’ he said
‘OK, I'll give you £1000 for it!’
‘£1500 in cash and you can have this one on my wrist’ he eventually said
I gave him the cash and he handed over the watch.
I put it on, we said our goodbyes and I started to walk away.
Then I heard him shout after me, he was pointing down to the suitcases.
‘Don't forget your batteries!’

Re: Smart watches.
I love watches . Who’s got what ? Daily I wear Apple Watch but love my g10 old school wind up too.
Outdoors it’s the tough as feck Garmin Fenix with 2 week battery life .
Got a Seiko XK another wind up which needs no battery so all good .
I couldn’t decide on a Smart watch that met all requirements so the Apple is great for every day wear, messaging, calendar , paying for things. Fenix when out in the woods.
You can get an Apple Watch 3 for 180 new . Fenix needs a bloody mortgage . G10 issued so buckshee. Seiko great looking for dress up about a ton.

I have a Breitling that looks smart and is self winding, that's pretty radical I think.

I wear a G Shock Solar and a Fitbit Inspire for everyday use, happy with both and they are often too smart for their own good!
I wanted a new dress watch that was different to the pack and eventually bought a Skagen Titanium. Simple, elegant and affordable.

It's just a simple tell the time and date which I like and is very slim. I'm not a fan of the blingy chunky dress watch or one's with a face like a Grandfather clock!Jakubclaret wrote: ↑Fri Jan 10, 2020 9:41 pmHi, I'll take a look at that watch, on a scale of 1-10 1 being poor & 10 being excellent, overall what rating would you give, thanks?

Im intrigued to know how the Garmin wearers find their watches. I’m after getting one too as I’m fed up of carrying my phone in my pocket and also how it often cuts my run mileage short by half a mile when I compare it to the route planners on line and my mates garmin.
I’ve been trying to decide on Garmins 35 (cheaper) 45 (new model) or the 235.

So far so good. When I first put it on, it seemed to be around the 69/70 mark which is too high, but it seemed like it needed to get used to me and when I check back over the day, it does give the values I'd expect (resting around 55, doing weights upto about 110 etc.)

I got some maps from talkytoaster free and they are good . The inbuilt maos don’t vector so are jumpy when zooming in . Loading routes and finding your way is easy . The phone shows and tells you where to go . Better than a paper map ? Yeah . You can preload routes and it tells you the elevation and shows contours. It is positively anoraky about collecting stats on any sport .
It has great ‘loop’ feature for running , wherever you are it will find you and tell you a few options for a running loop.
It’s the battery life that wins it for me . You can’t risk relying on one of these things and your battery dying on a long trip .
I use mine with paper map to find a reading , punch it in the phone and it takes me home .

Re: Smart watches.
I’m thinking watches are to fellas what shoes are to women .
So if you are outdoorsy or sporting you need a smart watch .
For every day you need a ‘beater ‘ solid nice looking thing that fits work life . Apple Watch or a lovely wind up classic like SKX .
Then for dressing up which I rarely do these days you need a pretty thing , the thinner the better in my opinion . Less is more .

Re: Smart watches.
Yeah, from what I've read it seems they are 95% accurate for 95% of the time, depending on the exercise. Mountain bike riding for instance is likely to show more inaccuracies than if you were spinning or walking.Belial wrote: ↑Sat Jan 11, 2020 10:02 amSo far so good. When I first put it on, it seemed to be around the 69/70 mark which is too high, but it seemed like it needed to get used to me and when I check back over the day, it does give the values I'd expect (resting around 55, doing weights upto about 110 etc.)
So perhaps not something to take as gospel. The most accurate seem to be the Polar chest-straps.
I guess it depends on what you're wanting the watch for.

Re: Smart watches.
Thanks, its a nice stylish watch but it needs to be a smart watch & not just a normal watch.

Re: Smart watches.
I have the forerunner 735 and the mrs has the 235. Superb bits of kit. Sync with garmin app and then to Strava is simple and works (unlike the Tom Tom I used to have). Loads of functions, including plotting a route that you can then follow, training plans, performance statistic etc.KlyBfc wrote: ↑Sat Jan 11, 2020 9:16 amIm intrigued to know how the Garmin wearers find their watches. Only slight gripe is that when we do the same run together, the mrs watch says she has done about 10% more! Really annoying as that then says she’s faster than me....
