Time to get rid of the Royal family?
As the Queen and Duke approach the end of their lives, is it almost time to remove the Monarchy? I’ve no criticisms of them.
It really is a nonsense to believe some people are born to rule above us. Is it time to become a truly modern country?

Oh, no... we can't have that. Think about the tourism. Everyone comes to England for the Royal Family I'm told

100% YES. An outdated concept that has no place in the modern world.

Re: Time to get rid of the Royal family?
Of course it is. They are an anachronism.
The only arguments I can see in the idea of a Royal Family is to keep our long history of developing our political systems, in the same way we have Blackrod and all that sort of ceremony. They also seem to have a purpose in selling Britain plc and being head of the Commonwealth.
It's also time to ditch religion from our politics. However I like the idea of a House of Lords made up of experienced and wise people, including representatives of religion. As long as it's not abused I see no need for it to be elected.

Re: Time to get rid of the Royal family?
Looks like Harry has shown us how it should be done. He was always going to do something like this given what happened to his Mum and now under the influence of another strong woman with more intrusive media issues ...hats off to Harry.
All the comparison with the Mrs Simpson stuff from the 1930s is quite interesting because I think they are essentially the opposite situation. On one hand Mrs Simpson craved to be a royal and couldn’t have it and on the other this is an actress used to getting her own way, doing what she wants when she wants with the media controlled by when she wants it (she doesn’t like the media controlling her and can’t cope with it).
Mrs Simpson wanted to be royal and Meghan doesn’t in a nutshell. Unfortunately for both examples you really cannot bend the protocol and it will be interesting to see how it all turns out...

At this rate we’ll have “ Randy” as the next King ! No surprise re:Harry as his Mrs must be an absolute nightmare. Probs fancied being a Princess and thought London was like a Richard Curtis movie with Hugh Grant ,red telephone boxes , blustering politeness and chirpy cockneys . “Harry! It’s cold and wet I hate England I’m goin home”

get rid, but judging by the hordes of mindless idiots that go to queue to see any royal baby leaving a maternity suite , or stand in the rain for a wedding, i doubt it'll happen anytime soon.

How dare you indeed . The Royal family are an institution and this country wouldn't be the same without them.. Long live the Royals and all they stand for...Worth every penny we pay them ..No a Royal family, tourism to our beloved country would be halved, papers would have to shut down.. The photographers would be unemployed.Magazines round cease to exist.. Perhaps we should get rid of all these anti Royal w@nkers.. Off with their heads..

Re: Time to get rid of the Royal family?
Yeah, loving all these " modern " countries with Presidents, like Venezuela, Cuba, North Korea, Zimbabwe etc ..
Obviously, there is an intellectual case for a Republic, but there is something to be said for a Head of State being " non political " . Ireland's President, is a non-political figure also. As I've said before, the Queen has saved us from the phrase, " Britain's first lady, Cherie Blair " ! Realistically, I don't think Charles will attract the same level of respect and affection that the current Monarch does, and after that who knows ?
It won't concern me, or, I suspect the vast majority reading this messageboard, as a Republic won't happen in most of our lifetimes. I wouldn't be surprised, however, if William is the last Monarch .....

I would rather have someone born to the job of head of state than someone who wants it. The current system is illogical but it works.

Its 2020, he married a woman from the states, it isnt unreasonable for them to want to live s lifestyle that allows them to enjoy both countries. He cant have the best of both worlds, take the money but tenege on the responsibility, so good on him for saying he wants to be self supporting. I wish them nothing but the best.Woodleyclaret wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2020 8:38 pmDiana played the press like a fiddle.Hes doing the same

As for the rest of them I'm proud to be a royalist. I can understand the argument for a republic, I just dont want one. Trying to convince others is a waste of time, rather like trying to convince an atheist there is a God.

I am truly horrified by some of the quotes here and have nightmarish visions, take the royal households, could fit hundreds of refugees, homeless in them, there are a lot across the country, of course no family needs all those homes/castles/manor houses etc. put them to doing good for the public.
I can see it fast forward 10 years what they would look like!!

People on here calling royalty outdated should perhaps consider that there are a number of - modern - countries in their beloved Europe and elsewhere that have royalty and it sits very well with their populations.
As to Harry and Megan. Let them go and dont give them any money. In view he made a mistake marrying this woman.

With the birth of William's children they are way down the line of importance in the Royal family now. Once the "novelty" of Meghan wore off they'd become of less and less interest to the press and less and less relevant to the public. By doing this, they're almost guaranteeing that their every move will be scrutinised, just like Edward VIII (David) and Wallis.)
Wonder if Harry has considered where this will leave him when / if they split up - as most Royals do.

Good luck to them both because they'll need it, especially when the tabloids have it in for them.
I've been saying for years that the RF should be slimmed down akin to Belgium, Netherlands etc. As for people saying that Harry and Meg will still require security at the taxpayers expense; well there's loads of minor royals, who aren't even household names, who get 24/7 security at the taxpayers expense.

Most people would have much less of an issue, and be quite relaxed about it if our Royal family was as slim and modern as those of our European neighbours.

It sits very well with their populations because those populations have not been expected to toady to their Royals nor revere them as national heroes by a sycophantic press. Sycophantic until they smell the blood of a new victim, that is. Of colour, American - fill yer boots, lads !
In the six other European kingdoms, they are respected as relatively normal human beings and for what they are, Royal Families going about their business in a practical way as possible.
Ours, by comparison, seem to be stupid and permanently ill at ease.
I can't blame the Sussexes for ******* off.

Classic issue for demonstrating the split down the country, with the hyper-liberals, as well as usually being Remainers, also want us to scrap the monarchy, whilst the socially conservative Brexiteers remain fans.
No right or wrong, but continues to show the schism in the country. We could have selected 20 other topics and the same posters would go to the same side of the argument despite each group having a mix of voters from both main parties. I’m finding that increasingly fascinating.
No, we cannot scrap the royals, we would be significantly diminished as a nation if we do.

Wouldn't you expect Remainers to be supporters of the Royal Family and Brexiteers, you know, the ones who hate undemocratic privilege and huge financial waste to be anti the Royal Family ?CrosspoolClarets wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2020 9:28 pmClassic issue for demonstrating the split down the country, with the hyper-liberals, as well as usually being Remainers, also want us to scrap the monarchy, whilst the socially conservative Brexiteers remain fans.

No they don't, they cost the country a reported 300 million plus per year.
