My son is 19 and has been let go from his job due to lack of work. He was doing general joinery and labouring - if anyone has any ideas and suggestions for him to follow I'd welcome the help and advice. He is based in Burnley, no driving licence though. Physically very fit and I think he has a good work ethic now. Just spoke to him and he looks destroyed...

Could he be any good at scouting footballers?

If he fancies a change of direction IT is a great industry with tons of jobs at all levels.

Can help out if he needs.

Try the railway. Usually plenty of work about.

The main thing is he keeps working. I told my own kids if the only job going was sweeping **** in the streets, then you sweep **** in the street. You can always look for a better job, or some form of training meanwhile.
I'm gutted for him, so kust temind him its not his gsult, its just life.
I hope he finds something soon.

actually yes... he was part of the Shadow Youth set up whilst at college...

The Armed Forces.

Massive recruiting drive at the moment, great careers, lots of choices of what to do, great qualifications.

Are there not agencies that deal with the building trade?

Presume he still lives at home so not many bills going out??

If so tell him to do some courses, furniture making, upholstery etc to build up his knowledge and experience and do part time work around it.

Nows the chance to do it rather than get stuck into something he might not like and get stuck there with the pressures of paying bills.

Fire brigade could be an option given in his fitness.

If it was one of my daughters in the future then I would be telling them to think about the type of thing they want to do or could see themselves enjoying (or at least not hating). You spend a lot of time at work (both each week and n the grand scheme) which is a long time to be unhappy or wishing you were doing something else.

If there is no immediate need for him to be working (lives at home) then it may be worth considering courses or apprenticeships because it will be a lot harder to re-train or swap career path once they have their own home / family.

As Goobs said above. Chances are, because of the 10 bob tories voting in the Conservatives, a 19 year old will likely be working until he is at least 75 so best get some solid career advice and training under his belt whilst young and presumably still at home.

If there are any building sites within travelling distance, he could do worse than poll up to each site's manager's office and see if there's anything doing. It's about this time of year when the big companies are desperate to get their planned quotas completed ( and the managers' bonuses paid) so he's a fair chance of being taken on, I'd think.

I do hope there is follow up in regard to him having secured something in the near future.

Submariners have my utmost respect. The idea of being in a tin can under the sea would do my brain in. The RAF can be bad though if you are a pilot - you can get shot down - not my idea of a good time. I know quite a few guys who have been in the forces though and they have usually loved it most of the time.

Sorry to hear that and look forward to hearing he has found a job with a career path. The bigger companies like Excel and Veka must be hiring regularly but I hope he can find work that aligns with his interests.

Great shout and if he keeps up his woodwork skills he can make a good living between the two.

He can immediately start to learn to drive. That will allow him to work across a wider geographic area.

Then find out what he really wants to do. He’s only 19, plenty of time to retrain.

Personally, I wouldn’t suggest the forces. So many of them on the streets unable to find employment after their service.

But it’s really a time to support him....to reassure him that new doors will open and not rush into the first thing that comes along.

Firstly sorry to hear about your lad, I’m surprised nobody’s mentioned this but it’s very important make sure he leaves with a reference if he hasn’t already, the next employer may want to look at it, the transport issue could be problematic but not insurmountable, I’d advise him to get a pushbike for now & when established in regular employment start driving lessons. If he signs up with as many agencies as possible it will give him work & that could lead to full time employment, you’ve just got to persist & eventually you’ll land lucky.

In the short term, if you're able, helping him get his driving license would get him a " life skill " that'll open up many more possibilities for him work wise ... best of luck to him !

It helps immensely, after a few lessons, get the L plates on & use a separate vehicle, saves on the lessons for sure, even block booking 10+ lessons fair weighs in especially if you are brassic to start with.

I do a lot of work with mechanical/electrical companies telecoms and access control/alarm companies and they are nearly always recruiting apprentices as lots of young people just want degrees. If I was advising my son I'd steer him this way. Good regular clean work and once qualified a great remuneration package.
First thing though get him driving ASAP that's a trade in itself these days. Good luck.

Has he got a CSCS card? If not he really needs one. Building industry is all about experience, assuming he still lives at home, he needs to get some temp jobs in and build up contacts and experience. Also worth looking into what he can get for free training wise if hes unemployed. I'm sure you used to be able to get onto courses that would otherwise have cost a few bob.
Personally, if I was 19 again I'd enroll on a full time course in one of the building trades (plumbing, electrical plastering etc.) you do one day a week at college and then have 4 days at work.

Not sure where you are based Rick but this company are offering, fully funded rail training for 19 to 23 year olds

They have a few facilities dotted around the country too, so he may not have to travel very far. I saw something about a 7 week course, that will get them their basic engineering tickets, followed by support into employment

Joined the Navy at 20. 35 years later I'm still involved through the Reserves after 32 years regular service. It absolutely made my life.
Whilst I wasn't remotely interested at 20, the pension is well appreciated these days! Free health/dental care, education grants (£175/year for training and 3 x £3000 available for higher education after 4 years service. Subsidised travel. Camaraderie that lasts a lifetime. Served on 4 continents plus the far east and Australia, been involved in conflicts but I think what I was doing made a difference. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend a visit to the AFCO.

Many go on to fantastic jobs in industry, I wouldn't rule out the forces on the basis of an unknown number being homeless especially as I would be surprised if a veteran whose dad cares enough to be asking on here for job ideas would allow it to happen.

some really good advice on here for the young lad. - I would recommend both the Army and IT for different reasons

I joined the army after leaving Gawthorpe high school and had a great time travelling etc.... The money isn't great but the life skills you learn along the way put you in good stead for future employment, if and when you leave the forces.....Having an army background on my CV has really helped me in getting interviews and jobs.

I now work for a FSTE 100 IT company living down south and would definitely recommend a career in IT- lots of scope to develop, travel and it pays really well. There are lots of IT companies around the UK and they are always on the look out for new talent. There is also a drive to hire millennial's like your self.

Recommendation from me would be to set up a Linked-in profile and start proactively communicating with these IT company's and agency's loads of jobs being advertised on linked- in
