Re: Holiday in Cape Verde
Went about 15 years ago. We were probably one of the first to go there. The tour operator told us on arrival ' just imagine you' re on the moon'.
Would be intrigued to see how much progress has been made. Wall to wall sunshine but a constant breeze. Very relaxing though and that is what we wanted. About a 6 hour flight. The beach was a little gritty but I believe huge progress has been made re: hotels. And of course even then there was an Irish bar available. Good luck.

Re: Holiday in Cape Verde
Cheers guys, yeah we’re just after a week relaxing to be honest.
I’ve just done city breaks for about the last 5 years so fancy chilling out.
The beaches look fantastic nowadays anyway, and the all inclusive deals are fairly decent!

Re: Holiday in Cape Verde
Been to Sal. Beautiful beaches, very very windy, loads of mozis..
Re: Holiday in Cape Verde
I was there for a couple of days (on a cruise) five years ago. At that time, the promised building boom from 10 years earlier hadn't materialised because of (they said) the financial crash. Whether it got started again since then, I don't know.
It's less fertile than the Canaries, but warmer. Except when the wind blows! We went on a trip up a mountain (don't expect seat belts) and at the top, were warned not to go any distance in one direction because we might be blown off - literally. And that's the larger members of the party!
The sea is warm and there's plenty of room, there are some very long, shallow sloping beaches, beaches are empty (well, they were five years ago), and there isn't the grinding poverty that you find in many African countries. The markets are full of food, and there are fat people about. (It's by no means rich, but it's stable, democratic, and friendly.)
For chilling out, it will be wonderful. Check which island you are on - there are about 9, same as the Canary Isles I think, and they are very very different.

Just keep an eye out for Robert de Niro. Nasty piece of work.

The above. I found the prevailing windy conditions very pleasant as it kept the humidity down. Went in November and was a great relaxing holiday. Only problem was the 6 hour flight in a small(ish) plane as the runway wasn't long enough to accommodate anything big.ayrshireclaret83 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 15, 2020 9:46 pmBeen to Boavista twice stayed at the Riu Touareg

We have been to Santa Maria on Sal for the last couple of years in November. Not too windy, just a nice breeze. You can go into the town for food drink and a look round which is a nice break from the all inclusive. The town has smartened up in the last year. We used the Riu Funana both years and enjoyed it. Happy to recommend it.

But you’ll be safe from Robert Mitchum.

Re: Holiday in Cape Verde
I went in december, just before christmas a couple of years ago and absolutely loved it. Wasnt a lot there but the weather was superb, was brilliant to recharge my batteries just before christmas. We did an excursion to a beach which had a shipwrecked boat on it and went to a little village that was nice to look around. The locals left you to it and never felt threatened wandering around.
I would go back definitely but only in winter to make the most of the weather. Do your homework on the hotel as you'll be spending a lot of time there.

Ahh nice! I've only ever done all inclusive once around 5 years ago - I fully intend to fill my boots.
Just noticed TUI are also using the Dreamliner plane for the flight (when we intend to go), should be a little better than the standard 737.

Re: Holiday in Cape Verde
The Riu Palace is on the same site(they used to be one hotel)as the Funana, and if you go to the RP you can use the FUN facilities, but you cant do it the other way round. However the shows in the evening, are shared by both, but they only last about an hour, and are very much the same every night. The beach is fantastic, you can walk for miles, but it is very very windy. Sunbeds on the beach are plentiful and free but you will two each, one to lie on and one each to use as a windbreak.Jambounchained wrote: ↑Thu Jan 16, 2020 9:45 amThe Riu Funana is the one we were looking at actually, looks lovely. Why would anyone want to go to Cape Verde or the Canaries in the summer when you have all Europe to go at beats me.
Verde is a winter destination and nothing else
