Re: Lifestyle advice
Some friends will say I've been retired since I was 19, as I've always worked for myself, but I've found common sense and self-motivation has always made me lose weight - I've then just lost the motivation and put it back on.
There's a reason why the word DIE is in DIET - they aren't needed.
If you have common sense, and don't have any underlying medical conditions that impact exercise/eating, then just eat better, don't eat as much, cut down on alcohol and go for daily walks.

Re: Lifestyle advice
All FF says is great advice. In my experience it's also really important to stop having nibbles at biscuits, chocolate and suchlike - temptations I find hard to resist but am trying to do so!

If your can, get a dog
Or better still be a puppy walker for the Guide Dogs
Our family dog died just before dad was due to retire.
He became a puppy walker and it gets him out during the day and has increased his social circle as well

We have 2 dogs Wilks but sadly like me they are getting old we take them out 5 times a day its difficult for them, they are usually 15 minute walks,by the end of the day before the last two walks they look up at me with sad eyes,I'm sure they are thinking f**k off man we dont want to walk.

I am 72 and walk a brisk 3 miles every morning before breakfast. During my walk I plan the rest of my day. Get rid of all the things in the house that you are snacking on because you are bored. If they are not in the house you can’t eat them.

Re: Lifestyle advice
Eating right will help you lose weight a lot quicker than going for a walk. Of course, the ideal way is to do both, but you can cut down on food even if you can't be arsed going out.
Re: Lifestyle advice
The early morning walk will clear your mind and give you more physical and mental energy.

Re: Lifestyle advice
The simple key is burn more calories than you eat. You are probably eating and drinking more through a more sedentary life. Get in the outdoors doing something you enjoy that involves perspiring. This will take you away from the biscuits and brews, or pub.
Good luck.
Good luck.
Re: Lifestyle advice
Steve. Some good advice on the board. I retired just over 2 years ago, I had plenty to do so my weight wasn't a problem, however, having done everything inside and outside the house I've started being a little lazy. I've also been having several biscuits with my morning cuppa, neve used to eat in between meals, it's not helped so I've (this last week) knocked them on the head. Bizarrely when I worked full time I hit the gym 3 times a week, retired I'm only managing it once, how stupid and lazy is that, that's going to change though. So to answer your question, eat healthy, combine that with some reasonable excercise several days a week and you'll be fine. Get the mountain/road bike out and get into a weekly routine of using it. Oh and we'll be expecting weekly reports.

I’ve not had a beer for 3 weeks and put weight on haha!
When I drink I don’t eat at all, so sat at home watching tv I’m just snacking all day with brews.
I’m back in the gym from this week and planning my shopping a little better, I’d like to lose about 8lbs before the summer

Re: Lifestyle advice
Regular walking is good, swimming probably better if you have a handy pool and like the water.
I live alone nowadays so I've no excuse for poor diet/not finding time to look after myself; it's harder doing that, though, if you live with A N Other(s).
I dont have a dog but can " find an excuse" for a walk most days. I walk into town (2.5 miles) most days and call at a supermarket half way- just buy what I need for the next day or so. Ensures I get some walking & lugging in regularly + I dont have too much surplus food in the house. Avoid the biscuit/cake aisle in the supermarket.
Cook from scratch- usually less fat/sugar/calories/general shi*e than processed stuff and cooking for yourself is satisfying/a bit of extra activity to get you out of the armchair.
Do NOT buy bigger clothes (/let the belt out a notch), make yourself fit into what you have; it's a slippery slope just buying new clothes for a larger frame, expensive too if you keep growing.

Get a bike.
(If you can)
It's amazing how powerful you become and how quickly. Plus for me it's all about the solitude. Nothing better than a ride alone.

You need a 'why?' to successfully lose weight.Steve1956 wrote: ↑Sun Jan 19, 2020 12:25 pmThe thing is Beddie is I live on the east coast of Scotland the walks are beautiful..the Fife coastal path is 117 miles long,I did 17 miles of it then lost motivation the most difficult thing is I have no motivation to get out and walk it,and since I have retired my health has dertriated alarmingly, not terminally but I've noticed small things, even putting my socks on has become more difficult....old age is s b@stard it creeps up on you when your not looking
There needs to be a reason why you want to lose it. If you don't have that, then you won't lose it.

Re: Lifestyle advice
I tend to do that. The shop I go to is a mile away and half of it is uphill. I buy the small cartons of milk, as I know I'll need to go back in a day or two to buy another.
Re: Lifestyle advice
Are you married? Walking on your own locally can get boring. Walking with someone else is easier. If you're not married or your wife can't or won't go for a walk, there must be some local society that does walking. Walking is good for your health. It won't make you lose weight directly but it uses muscles, gets the pulse going, makes you sweat a bit perhaps - all good things. I think some advocate 10,000 paces (which is of the order of five miles) a day, three or four times a week.
Other exercises which aren't exercises are gardening, an allotment, dancing. Perhaps a part time job or volunteering. The latter can be very rewarding.
You perhaps also need other hobbies for things to do. Reading, photography, cooking well, evening classes. There's so much to know.
If you don't get some purpose in life you'll stagnate and die early.

By the way, a ketone diet will help lose fat around the waist. It's a bit tough to do though but you shouldn't get hungry.

Re: Lifestyle advice
It will, as you require energy to walk (calories).
It just can't be used as an excuse to have biscuits. The mistake a lot of people make is they reward themselves for doing exercise, with the food that puts the calories back in. A chocolate bar can take seconds to eat, but can take an hour to walk off.
Re: Lifestyle advice
Actually, if you want some motivation, buy a blood pressure reader and blood sugar monitor. That may scare you!

Buy a decent camera and go taking daily walks, recording the things that you see. Pop the on Instagram.

Well, I wouldn't look at exercises as a method of loosing weight unless you do a lot.FactualFrank wrote: ↑Sun Jan 19, 2020 12:42 pmIt will, as you require energy to walk (calories).

If you insist on counting calories the difference between walking or sitting for an hour is apparently around 200 - it helps but it's not a major factor. When you consider a pound of body fat is supposed to be 3,500 calories, it would take you 18 days of walking for an hour (3-4 miles) to loose that. Of course the body doesn't work that way and whilst counting calories is a guide it's mostly a waste of time and effort calculating everything to the nth degree.
What exercise can do is improve your body metabolism which will make you generally more healthy.
A good diet will lose you weight. That's essential. Starving yourself - having a large calorie deficit over a longish period - will loose a lot of weight initially but then the body becomes used to the lack of food and slows down its metabolism. This will cause harm as muscle will also be used to provide the body energy. That's proof enough that calorie counting isn't anywhere near accurate enough.
The easiest solution to losing weight is to eat proper food - no crap like biscuits, cake, chocolate, crisps, or ready made meals. Cook your own from basic ingredients.

Re: Lifestyle advice
That's what I've been saying. What you eat makes losing weight easier/faster. You can't out-train bad eating. But walking on top of eating well will help even more. It also helps to strengthen your heart, works your lungs, improves circulation etc.Hipper wrote: ↑Sun Jan 19, 2020 1:08 pmWell, I wouldn't look at exercises as a method of loosing weight unless you do a lot.

I've lost 5 pounds in 13 days. I was going to start on the 1st, but left it until the Monday (6th).
No diet. No calorie-counting. Just common sense + walking.

If you have the willpower to do this, you don't have a problem. Inveterate snackers will simply use the 3 mile walk as the opportunity to indulge or restock. Or both.
