16 stone to 15 in a month Frank is that doable it's generally easy at first then gets harder to shift it.FactualFrank wrote: ↑Sun Jan 19, 2020 1:10 pmSteve - he's an idea. Put your exact current weight on the thread, along with your goal for 4 weeks today.
You've told everybody then, so you'll be under pressure to make it happen!

Re: Lifestyle advice
Easily doable. But you need to be consistent.
If you don't drink enough water, you can get off to a great start by drinking at least 2 litres of water a day. You can lose a few pounds purely from water retention.
Ironic as it may sound, if you drink more water you lose water retention as your body knows it doesn't need to hold onto any.

You need to change your mindset.
Most people retire in their 50s or 60s yet I picture an 80 year old when I read your posts.
Get out of your chair . Fact : Sitting on your ass all day is equivalent to smoking 20 cigs a day.
Start the day with a good stretch of your major upper and lower muscles.
If you do these simple things I 'll give you more good advice. No point now until you stop complaining and do something about it

I've been retired for almost 2 and a half years now and tbh, by and large it's pretty much crap!! If it wasn't for away matches watching the Clarets and the odd foray abroad watching England play cricket, it would have been ABSOLUTELY pointless. The vast majority of days are an absolute waste of time!! I'd sooner be at work. (sadly!)
Re: Lifestyle advice
You are not doomed ffs...
Eat less exercise more and you can be svelte like me Steve... ohhh hang on a minute I am 16 and three quarter stones and a fat b'stard ...
Look m8 its a simple equation and it goes like this...
Eat less and exercise more. Thats what my Neice in law (she is a nurse) tells me ...
I just cannot help my self ... prematch bacon and egg butties ... post match Steak and the trimmings and 1/2 a bottle of Merlot etc etc... a couple of pints when we get back ... I should walk more I know ... but f**k it, I am happy and I know it ... so I clap my hands and say pass me another glass.
All things in moderation m8. A little of what you fancy does you good my old man used to tell me.
I have a 77 yr old brother who is 20 stone plus ... his knees are f**ked but he is still going

I have bought some collar button extenders for my shirts for our cruise in March cos I am too tight to buy new shirts....
Have made it a plan this summer to exercise more and eat less....
(Stretch jeans are ace m8 )
Baby steps though don't try and do it all at once, little and often to start with with exercise ... I lost a good pal last year who was complaining of getting fat... silly bugger tried to do too much and had a f**king heart attack on his own jogging...

Re: Lifestyle advice
Don't change too much with your diet Steve or whatever you lose you will put back on.
Just a couple of simple changes.
Drink plenty of water. Your digestive system doesn't work without it.
Eat one grapefruit every day and an apple if you can (both fatburners).
Do the walking as suggested before breakfast if you can, but if you raise your heartbeat by running up and down the stairs a few times before the walk, it will have double the benefit.
Good luck.

Re: Lifestyle advice
Steve, we are around the same age. I had a heart attack 4 years back. I thought I was fit(ish), was still playing 5-a-side, but my trousers had all got a lot tighter - and, maybe, putting socks on was a bit of a struggle. I'm now 2 stone lighter and a lot fitter. Regular exercise every day, almost 15,000 for me today. And, I cut out the alcohol to take care of my heart (Heineken zero, while watching the game today). Skiing with family and 2 (wonderful) granddaughters in a few weeks time.
Take care of yourself - and maybe have a check over with your GP.

Re: Lifestyle advice
Only you can do it. Nobody else.
Like I've said before, the 'why' has to be big enough. If it isn't, you won't stick at it.
This is why people who have been given a scare by their doctor after tests, often do something about it - but that's often what it takes. It takes a "If you carry on doing this, you'll die" to buck their ideas up.

Try to cut out or much reduce bread, pasta and alcohol ( during the week ), and try and get back to walking. Weigh yourself, and set a target ..
If there's one near, try a Crossfit gym .... exercise in a group, all ages, a good one will scale the exercises to your ability ....

Re: Lifestyle advice
Reduce bread, sure. I wouldn't rule wholemeal out as it contains a lot of B vitamins including Folic Acid which the body can't produce itself. Bread has had bad press that some people have taken as gospel.Clarets4me wrote: ↑Sun Jan 19, 2020 10:30 pmTry to cut out or much reduce bread, pasta and alcohol ( during the week ), and try and get back to walking. I've lost 5 pounds in under 2 weeks... I've had a couple of slices of bread most mornings. If it was that bad, I wouldn't have lost any weight.
Like I say - you don't need a gym. You really don't. Eat better, eat less crap, mix it it with some walking and drink 2 litres of water a day. Simple as that.

we live in an era of beer ads and fast food ads, 24 hour internet, films galore at the touch of a button.
In this region with one of the worst records for deprivation and bad health habits, its little wonder people struggle.
we often have to play catch up with the stupid new health fads, christ, I detest them, but inevitably we have to either accept the poncified advice and become gym bores or worse still joggers, or expect the worst. probably a few small adjustments will pay dividends. swear an oath you will never leave the house with headphones and white trainers, and you'll be fine.
and kill anyone who convinces you veganism or sobriety is the key to success.

Re: Lifestyle advice
Good health is 80% what you eat and 20% exercise.
No point in punishing yourself with exercise if you have a poor diet.
I am astounded at the crap people in this country eat and they say that they are on a diet, some folk are clueless

Re: Lifestyle advice
In my late 20s I put a lot of weight on. I was one of those annoying buggers that could eat whatever I wanted and never get fat in my early 20s however it caught up with me.
I tried running but running when overweight and unfit is well hard so I ended up getting a bike and hammering it. Over the past 6 months I haven’t been able to go out on 5 hour bike rides due to having two young kids so I’ve started running again. Running when already fit makes it much easier and enjoyable.
3 years ago I was seriously unfit. I’m now the fittest I’ve ever been and I am currently training for the Fellsman, a 60 mile fell race.
My advice would be get out walking as much as possible. You will be surprised how many calories you can burn on a quick walk. I walk/jog to work most days. 8 miles there and back

Re: Lifestyle advice
Steve, you lucky baaastard. I'm 65 and still working (because my wife is a lot younger and won't let me retire). Consequently I'm paying more tax than Amazon (although that isn't difficult). I don't have an active job though but I work out with bloody heavy weights 3 times a week (no gym, I've got my own stuff, had it years). I walk a great deal including taking out Charlie the Staffy. I am reasonably careful (but not overly so) on what I eat, just making sure I burn as many calories as I eat (averaged out over a week or so, some days I'm massively over). Consequently I am currently just under 12.5 stone at 5'9.
Also I NEVER use lifts unless I have to (don't like them anyway) and tend to nearly always RUN up stairs.
My main vice these days is wine (lot's of it - far more than is probably good for me).
Hope that helps.
PS: stay off the bloody haggis and whiskey.

Swim. Go every weekday, and walk or cycle to and from. Learn some basic meditation techniques (emptying your mind of all thoughts), and practice this while you swim. Don’t ogle women there, as they’ll come to you once your muscles and air of zen calm take shape.
