Jeff Hendrick

Post by Kitch1966 » Sun Jan 19, 2020 6:57 pm

Have all the ' Hendrick knickers ' gone to bed ? He is certainly the scapegoat most weeks when we don't win so " Let's be avin' ya " as Delia once shouted and give the guy a break. He is quite clearly a confidence player and we will get more games like today from him if the numpties get off his case. Rant over !

1st half he was a bit behind but 2nd half after SD had his half time chat Jeff and the lads showed us what we havent seen recently ...
The BFC spirit and never say die attitude that has been missing. Lets take that into Wednesday night and shovel some Manure at Old Trafford.....

I think he is wasted when playing behind striker. Our best option for rm even when gudmunsen is fit imo. Think he will go to Celtic in the summer

He was excellent today and for me we generally look a better team with him in it. He does have his ups and downs but then so do most of our squad which is why they are with us. I remain hopeful we can tie him down to a longer contract.

Nope, still very average.
Had many a opportunity to drive at their defence when we had an overload, but often checked back for the safer option.
Really does restrict is to only having 1 attacking threat, which is the left side

He did play well today but with the amount of space and decent positions he was allowed then it would have been good to see what a proper winger would of done.

Thought he was really frustrating first half. Kept getting into good positions and then dithering on the ball. Second half the entire team, including Hendrick, grew in confidence, especially after the penalty save.

I thought he had a good game today. To be fair though, I think he's a good footballer. I think we should be keeping him when you think we could spend £20m, easily, on someone the same as him and, probably, no better.

In the first half Hendrick was free to Jayrods right but he opted to shoot from distance, when there was a far better option. I never heard our lot getting on Jayrods back but I know one thing for sure, if it was the other way around Jeff would have been jeered as per usual. And before anybody accuses me of being in Hendricks fan club I'm not but I think he deserves a bit of slack from most of the fans. Yes, there are far better midfielders out there but whilst he's wearing the Claret shirt, get fully behind him.

he’s been a very important player for us over the years, if we want to improve of course he would need replacing but that all depends on where you think we should be as a team. I’ve absolutely no problem with him.

Has grown into the first names on the team sheet this season, got to sign him up if we can, going to cost a lot to replace.

Game of 2 halves from him today.
As other say, didn't carry the ball forward with any belief first half. 10th minute, acres of space to take the ball into down the right, slowed to almost walking pace then stopped and looked lost...... just move the ball forward Jeff, you can do it!
Second half, showed for the ball (albeit a little too deep for my liking) used the ball well, nice little touches and involved with much more purpose. Up there for MOM second half if Pope hadn't been playing.

He was ok but he's not the right choice when we're playing a fullback who doesn't overlap.

Because he plays quite narrow and can't skin a man he needs a fullback on his outside as an out ball.

When we sign a glen little esque player for the right then sure we can drop him, until then I’m happy with his contribution seeing as Lennon offers not very much when he starts or comes on.

Did what he always does, never let's us down. Him and Bardsley are steady enough down that side, but at times from an attacking point of view their limitations were clear.

Hendrick was really good today. I'll admit I'm not always his biggest fan, but Leicester helped by (imo) giving him far too much room and ball and he took full advantage. Fair play Jeff!

Thought he had a great game today.

I’d like to see him drive in to the box, which he had a few opportunities to do today. Same with McNeil and Taylor (occasionally) though.

Played well today, I said on the match thread though that I was urging him to attack the goal with the ball at his feet. He had so much space on the right and kept checking back for Bardlsey to overlap, or Westwood to catch up. I’d have him running straight towards goal at speed on those circumstances and drilling it across for our forwards to attack - that way he’d invite challenges which would get us set pieces or pens.

On the drive back I thought imagine De Four today on top of his game playing alongside Westwood. How we miss someone of De Fours ability

Part of Leicester’s game plan, particularly first half, was to close off our left and encourage us to go right. There was acres of space down our right side.

Leicester had done their homework and we created very little from the right hand side all game.

Hendrick is a good utility player and had some nice moments today, but we’re a far more potent attacking force when there’s more quality on the right than (and Bardsley) he can offer.

If Dyche sees Hendrick as the long-term incumbent of that position, we need a right back with more attacking quality than Bardsley. As a pair, it’s very one-dimensional.

Someone sat next to me today who wasn't a Burnley fan but went as a supporter of the game in its widest sense. Through non-Claret eyes he pointed out that it was obvious Bardsley was so exposed when attaching down the right because the rest of the team were so far away from him. At times like that Hendrick should be up there to put in an attacking shift, but he lacks the positional sense to support Phil when he's most needed.

Our best and most reliable option in that wide right position. We are simply a better team with him in it. I’ll be gutted if we lose him at the end of the season. I think it will cost us a fortune to get a replacement of equal or better quality.

Completely agree.

That said, thought he did a brilliant job doubling up with Bardsley when we were under pressure at the end.

Definitely one of his best games in a Burnley shirt. A couple of frustrating moments in the first half but overall a very positive performance.

Agree largely with agreenwood though, Leicester forced us to attack down the right knowing that this would take our biggest threat (McNeill) out of the game and knowing that Bardsley and Hendrick are both very limited in attack. That said, both players really put a good shift in today.

Me too.
That moment in the first half when he had oceans of space down the right I'm screaming, get in the box lad, you have the footwork to draw a foul or go and get a shot in.
He needs a lot more belief in himself.

Or he’s under instructions to get it to Westwood/Bardsley for a cross every time?! I’d love to see our wide players running at pace in to the box, committing players and playing the odd low ball in. I’m sure we’d win a fair few pens through sheer shock they’re not having to defend another cross!

Dyche needs to sort that out. A bit of variety would be nice.

Hendrick on the right is PL level, not so much in the center I would say but his flexibility is a bonus. For that he has proven his value and we should try to keep him.

First half was a bit wary to drive into the space with the ball but he isn’t a natural winger, however his work rate and willingness to fill in that role speaks volumes.

Second half he was outstanding , work rate, good on the ball, Bardsleys will to win the ball and his passion yesterday was also immense and probably helped Jeff. A new full back with a bit of pace about him on the right hand side to overlap Jeff (Trippier style) would compensate for his lack of drive(due to him being a central midfield player obviously). All this being said I’m not criticising him at all here just pointing outthat he’s not a winger ....having said that he was brilliant yesterday and I hope he kicks on from here and the fans back him because he’s important to us, and a new contract is required for this lad.

He’s been stuck in multiple roles, and asked to do different jobs and he just gets on with it and gives his all. Well done Jeff and UTC

Don’t mind it if they stick to their game plan 70% of the time. Whipping the crosses in is effective. Just want them to play with some variety.

Running the ball out or in to blind alleys can be equally frustrating, but there have definitely been better options to run in to the box in the last few weeks that we have passed up.

It’s not just Hendrick. McNeil did something similar first half - played a pass across the edge of the box when he had an opportunity to burst in the box. Taylor the week before.

Just heard Dyche say he likes the team to “mix it up” so hopefully it’s something they’ll work on.

Tbf, can do a job in the Prem & probably his last big contract. Imagine if we stay up we’ll stand a chance but may still lose him if others offer him a big signing on fee. If we go down, no chance.

After seeing all the praise for him on here I watched the 30 minute highlights on Sky with Jeff a particular focus.

He wasn't shown for any highlights at all. Just before we scored the first goal the commentator was asking for Lennon to come on to give us something going forward.

I'm glad it wasn't just me that never saw this outstanding game he had.

I really want him to do well as he's a Burnley player but he frustrates the life out of me.

Hendrick played as well as he can, very committed and typified our hard work and effort. Even as a right midfielder he's limited and a little reluctant to get crosses in the box. With Chilwell out it was the left back area Leicester were most vulnerable but we didn't exploit it enough. Had Gudmundsen been on or even Brady, may have been different and we would at least had the option of switching McNeill over as we generally do when Gudmundsen, Brady or even Lennon do when they start. Not knocking Hendrick, he had a decent game and worked tirelessly- it's just he's not great at attacking the full backs and getting crosses in the box which could have given us more goal chances yesterday.

I am not a Hendrick fan but he played better yesterday, however I don't think he is or should be our 1st team player but he keeps playing and in many roles, I thing his versatility helps and hope he stays with us, my opinion is if he did not sign no other PL would buy him. A team taking a run at getting in to the PL would and I think that's his level.

The right hand side yesterday had lot's of free space, I didn't see much of switching play in to that space and he rarely attacks the fullback as many have said here before. Again though he played much better yesterday and as a team we were much better for it, am sure it will be the same team again against Man U, there attacking threat is way more than LC was so midfield needs to be much stronger in the tackles and defense will need to be further back to cope.

Tend to agree with this. No slight on Hendrick (or Bardsley) who individually had good games, and there are plenty of occasions when we need what these two offer - United away on Wednesday will be one such example. As everyone knows, I'm a huge fan of what Hendrick offers, whatever role he plays in.

But with teams increasingly focusing on shutting down our left hand side, denying McNeil in particular on that touchline and daring him to come inside and us to open up the right hand side - we need to build more threat into our play down that side. Hendrick could have been equally effective as he was in the first half playing from the left hand side, and it surprised me that we didn't see McNeil swap sides during the first half to search for space (he made our goal at Leicester after all with a right wing cross). But if McNeil is going to come narrow more to try and influence the game as he did in the second half, then I'm not so sure that we need Hendrick playing so narrow as often as well - certainly until we have more of a marauding full back on that side, it seems to me that Lennon would offer better balance. That's particularly with Rodriguez playing more of a Sheringham role than Barnes' bombastic interpretation of the second striker role.

Lennon hasn't pulled up trees at Burnley, but he thrives on making runs beyond the striker down the right hand channel, and exploiting space when the ball is switched early, and the introduction of Rodriguez amounts to about the first time that Lennon has had a teammate able to play to those strengths since he arrived at Burnley (Defour got injured a couple of weeks before he arrived).

That's true Lennon is better with Rodriguez.
