Venice tips
Afternoon Clarets!
I'm heading over to Venice in March with the Mrs for 5 days, wondered if anyone had been and had any good experiences they would recommend.
We've looked at going to one of Florence/Bologna/Verona for one full day, but other than the obvious touristy stuff does anyone have any tips? Activities, places to eat etc.
Thanks!

Re: Venice tips
If you can arrive by train, it is a great experience walking out of the station and arriving on the edge of the canal. Very surreal found
Re: Venice tips
Been a couple of times - most recently last September in a weeks holiday to Bologna where we went for a day.
I would definitely recommend a day trip from
Venice to any of the places you mention - I’d say Verona out of the 3 and then Florence. Bologna is very nice too but there is more to see in the other 2.
As for Venice it’s a great place. We did the Peggy Guggenheim museum and really enjoyed it. We also did a boat trip to Murano the glass factory - it was a free boat trip as they like you to visit the glass place to buy something....we didn’t but the boat trip itself was great and better than the expensive Gondolas where it all looks a bit packed.
St Mark’s square is beautiful - during the day and night. Worth a trip up the tower as it’s great views.
The restaurants on St Marks square are expensive but you have orchestras and music playing at most and you can just walk round at night. If you eat off the main square there are lots of great places to eat nearby that are better value.
Rialto market during the day is worth a walk - it’s a great food market but it’s also great to walk around the streets.
Great place but for 5 days you are definitely doing the right thing seeing another city - the trains are great and cheap (and clean and on time !!). If you are there for 5 full days I’d be tempted to do Verona and Florence. You are not even that far from Rome....which if you haven’t been is incredible.

Perfect time to go. I went in March a few years ago. Means you don't need to book or queue at restaurants. Also the canals wont stink
One of the best things we did was get a weeks pass to use on the canal boats which means you can travel just about everywhere cheaply and go out to some of the islands

If you spend some time in Venice, then pop over to an island, beware of cars. You get lured into a false sense of security in traffic free Venice!

Re: Venice tips
Get on the waterbus at Fondamente Nove and take the interesting, and pretty short, journey past the cemetery island and past Murano out to Burano, traditionally the lace-making island. A really nice spot for lunch. There is a church up near Fondamente Nove called Gesuiti which has a particularly impressive interior I remember so you could pop in there when you get back.
Venice is great if you can avoid the worst of the over-crowding due to tourism.Genuinely and authentically beautiful and atmospheric.
Oh and definitely go to Verona....most definitely worth a visit. Terrific Roman amphitheatre there...a mini-Coliseum...and some excellent restaurants and bars.

Don't go there on your honeymoon if it clashes with England playing Germany in a major tournament and get so drunk after England win that you end up sleeping in the bushes outside your hotel.

Re: Venice tips
Loads of stuff to do in an around Venice and hopefully the police have clamped down on the street sellers who block loads of the bridges with fake stuff.
One place I would suggest is San Giorgio Maggiore, the church opposite from Piazza San Marco. The views from the Campanile are brilliant and the lift to the top is a couple of Euros. The decoration inside the church is well worth exploring as well. The islands of Murano and Burano are worth visiting as is Lido for a time out and a nice meal.
Most of all, whatever you do, enjoy it. It's a lovely place to visit.

Re: Venice tips
i stopped near peschiari del garda on lake garda and did the train to venice from there about 55 mins if memory serves.
well worth visiting from Venice and some of the world heritage sites round the lake..also the same line as Verona..other than the Juliet balcony and the roman amphitheatre not to much there ..however they do opera nights at the amphitheatre there and that's an experience even if opera is not your bag..

Grand Hotel Dei Dogi is wonderful. It's not cheap but beautifully decorated and has a free shuttle to St Marks Square. The food is superb. If you want to impress the lady in your life you won't go far wrong

Re: Venice tips
Yeah, do Garda and bardolino. And Verona.
If you get to Bologna try to see the Ducati museum. Unless you don’t like motorbikes, in which case, don’t bother.
Eat loads of food. Italian food is spectacularly good.

Re: Venice tips
I went to the Ducati Museo in 2012, but it was all race bikes, the only road bikes were a couple of very early moped types. As for Venice, Only go to St Marks very early or very late. Nothing at Murano if you arn't a fan of glass, unless you want to see the real Venice, where they hang their washing out, warts an' all. Burano is incredible, should be able to see it and Torcello in a day. Not a Verona fan, the Amphitheater and its square is superb but Juliette's balcony is the worst kind of tourist trap and wasn't even at the planning stage when old Will Shakespeare was writing. Florence or Lucca in a different league. How about a day in the Dolomite's or Lake Garda, Sirmione and Malcesine both stunning.

Re: Venice tips
If the attraction is streets full of water, boats the only way to get around, expensive eating and drinking, the locals speaking an unusual language, wait ‘til it’s p*ssed down for a few days and catch the train from Manny Road to Hebden Bridge. A bargain at less than £8 return.

Re: Venice tips
Hi matt4, Venice is great. You've got 5 days, no reason at all to spend any of it travelling on the train to try and see another Italian city - save those for another time. Lots and lots to see and do in Venice, you might find 5 days isn't enough. Most of the places mentioned by others in posts above are great. There's a vast range of art/culture; Peggy Guggenhein's is great; many of the palaces and churchs also have impressive art of various periods. One not mentioned that is worth a morning, is the Jewish ghetto. If you are flying and arriving in day light then arriving by water taxi from the airport is the way to start your trip - and a simple bus back to the airport is the way to balance your budget and see a little more of the neighbourhood.Claretmatt4 wrote: ↑Mon Jan 20, 2020 3:18 pmAfternoon Clarets!

Walk out of St Marks Square with the grand canal in front of you and turn left. About 100 yards down is the Hotel Danieli. Doesn't look anything from outside, but have a look inside. I was stunned.
