Burnleys first ever game
think we were hammered 0-8 by Astley Bridge whoever they were.
Curious as to how this messageboard would have looked had it been possible for such a thing back then.
Probably slagging off the state of the opposition fans moustaches or their cheap fobwatches .
Don't imagine the board got too much stick, or the pies.

Astley Bridge F.C. was based just outside Bolton, but to be fair, Burnley F.C. had just agreed to switch from playing under the Rugby rules, to those of " Association Football ", which may account for the scoreline ...
I understand an ancestor of " AndrewJB's " wrote to the " Burnley Express ", blaming the defeat on Disraeli, and the Tories, until it was pointed out to him that Disraeli had died the previous year. In fact, an elderly man with lefty tendencies had been elected as Prime Minister two years earlier, and was facing criticism for pulling our troops out of Afghanistan, his role in Ireland, and antisemitism in his party. ( William ( Jezza ) Gladstone ). Another published letter was from a " Scot in exile " in Wiltshire, who blamed the defeat on the 1706 " Act of Union ", and suggested hiring both Scottish players to improve the team, and a " French dancing Lady " to improve morale on match days !
The Astley Bridge Manager apparently claimed that they were " 10 years ahead " of Burnley, whilst Burnley's committee's " Chairman of Selectors " declared to the press that, " We're tight as a group, I was pleased with the performance, despite some individual errors and the results will come in due course " ....

Re: Burnleys first ever game
Burnley's first ever game was well before the official date and we'd probably all be wondering why we'd changed rules from the previous week , whether it would be Football or Rugby next Saturday and arguing over whether the team that played association rules at Turf Moor had anything to do with Calder Vale later Burnley Rovers later Burnley or not ?!

"You think it's bad these days. We've never had it so good
I was there in the dark old days. And no I dont mean The Orient Game, I'm talking about Astley Bridge 8 (eight) Burnley 0"
