Great read Tony. As I came off that game in 1965 as an inconsolable 10 year old an old Utd fan patted my head and said "never mind son, it will be your turn one day". That day came yesterday!

I love the fire drill comment. Very funny. As to man of the match I think you should cancel the vote and award it to the whole team in honor of an amazing TEAM performance

"Don’t believe all this nonsense being spouted today about how poor they are. It’s not about them; it’s about us and we’ve won at Old Trafford and moved on to 30 points."
That hits the nail on the head !

Pardon me for quoting your report Tony but a truer comment could not be made. Man U didn't play well but every Burnley player did and that for me is probably the reason why

Sorry bfcjg you jumped in ahead of me with the same idea but lets try and sing it from the rooftops!

Belting report CT, A truly magnificent evening which I have waited a long time for.

Our lads knew their jobs and carried out a seriously disciplined tactical performance.

The eerie silence walking towards Chester Road after the game was only interspersed by the sound of pennies dropping as the glory hunters realised that they have a lot of work to do to recover past glories, indeed it became like a Krypton Factor assault course as I tried to make progress against a tide of trembling bottom lips.

What a victory !

A great report, Tony has "a way with words" and this report will be revisited for years to come.

Was the "fire drill" a false alarm?

Copied and pasted to a Word file to be kept for much repeated reading.

I'm not sure many people - myself included - know just how much last night means to you, Tony.

I am made up for you and every Claret who's suffered anguish at OT.

Of the 1962 team is it just Alex Elder who is alive to enjoy last night's result?

Close to tears at the end. I didn’t think I’d ever see us win there. So, so very special.

despite all the tv and radio sob stories about united's woes, and the constant analysis of where it is all going wrong for the reds, that performance by Burnley was phenomenal.
every now and again they manage to shock the fans and dig out a display like that.
United were dangerous too, and had plenty of talent on the pitch.
That last night was genuinely jaw dropping stuff from the clarets.

Heard a few United regulars say that, but all to a man also said how good we were and that our desire embarrassed theirs

Fantastic report, great stuff. Living in Bury I'm surrounded by United fans, I felt sorry for my United supporting neighbours this morning so brought their bins in for them. Whenever I've been out I've worn my Clarets bobble hat which has prompted some great comments, probably from City fans! The media afterwards was wrongly all about United, that was some performance by the Clarets.

With regard to Jon Moss, I didn't realise this until pointed out by a boro colleague, the free kick for the Wood goal was actually taken in the wrong half!!!

Keown made comment on that on MOTD. It was like most free kicks, taken a few yards forward but more noticeable because of the half way line.

Not only was it (free kick) taken from the wrong place but it shouldn't go un-noticed the importance of Tarks slight nudge on Matic (he folded like a pack of cards) - which enabled Ben Mee the clear header onto Wood. Two sublime finishes - great report C T, proud to be a Claret.

Just home from a few pints and reading this excellent article Tony reminded me of one of our games at Barnsley, in the nineties. I was in their Clubs guest room, when I saw a man stood wearing a blazer emblazoned with a FIFA referees badge and recognised it to be McCabe the referee at the 1965 game. The moment which had festered inside for all those years was about to be given a very rare opportunity to to comment to a referee about a game. I walked over to him and introduced myself, “Mr McCabe isn’t it, yes it is it. Have we met before. No but I I was at the 1965 game you refereed between Man Utd and Burnley, which you robbed Burnley of victory. You allowed George Best to run from his own half with one of his boots in his hand, fully 50 yards, while in control of the ball, which led them to score. Call yourself a FIFA referee, you were a disgrace to the badge allowing that to happen, without stopping play, as you should have”. I then walked away from him and the feeling of the bitterness I had held for him for nearly 30 years seemed to uncoil itself from inside of me.

How many things have we witnessed over the past 11 years that we never thought we would see again? Back into the top level of English football, 23 games undefeated, wins over Rovers, playing in European competition, wins over League champions home and away. Beating every Premier League team bar two (but hopefully 1 of those gets crossed off a week on Sunday) and playing our 4th consecutive season in the top division.

To think, I once celebrated beating the likes of Peterborough, Stockport and Crewe as they seemed to be way ahead of us both on the field and with their potential!

When we were losing against the likes of Peterborough, Stockport and Crewe I really believed we would never play a league game again at Old Trafford. And then Wednesday.

I was at that game too with a few of my relatives. Just a couple of months short of 13, attending school in Salford and so had to face the jibes and taunts the following Monday. Remember going to Burnley with my dad the previous Sunday to get tickets. Don't know how they were allocated( think it was around 13/14,000) but we found ourselves in the Stretford End Paddock just to the right of the goal as we looked at the pitch.
By the way, for some reason I have it in my head that the game was played on a Sunday but that can't be right, can it, for.1965?

This link is showing as Saturday.

https://www.transfermarkt.co.in/fc-burn ... on_id/1964

Although it’s also showing 5:30am kick off time.
It was probably being shown on one of those Far Eastern betting websites or something.
We don’t know how lucky we are nowadays with our structured kick off times.

I was banished to the bar area after Jay smashed his goal in due to me being surrounded by UTD and the 3 I travelled with not wanting to get beat up.
If I'd celebrated with quite some enthusiasm the Wood goal (being told to effing sit the eff down or eff off) I went absolutely bananas when the second went in. What was I supposed to when I'd seen one of the best ever Burnley goals hit the net, sit on my hands?

I saw the rest of the match out on the hospitality screens whilst downing a bottle of Claret to ease the nerves
