Anybody seen one of these ?

Post by evensteadiereddie » Thu Jan 23, 2020 2:49 pm

I spotted this in an auction and it's described, rather imaginatively, as a shield-shaped card and is reckoned to be football-related.
I think it's quite an interesting thing but there's no information regarding its age or purpose - does anybody know ?

What ARE those things in the middle? Acorns? Fish? Deflated rugby balls? It's certainly an oddity.

Two rather large arses under an umbrella on a bench. One says to the other...........

Add your own punchline.

Is the card to do with cricket ? Bowls ?

Ha ha yeah - now I see it. It's like one of those trick photos you see on Facebook. Still haven't a clue what is going on though. The way their feet are though it looks like they are sat on a bhuddist meditation bench.

It looks like a bookmark, a freebie given away with the purchase of a book. Probably 1940's early 50's.

Possibly but I'd say the dress to the right looks vaguely Edwardian - I'm wondering if it's connected with our Cup exploits in 1913 and 14 ?

Looks like a Baines card or s W Sharpe card. Turn of the century to pre war for sure ( first ww). I have bought and sold a lot of Burnley items over the years but never seen this one before. Buy it unless it’s silly money

Just spotted it says W.N.Sharpe at bottom of card. Made in Bradford and quite scarce. The are trading cards and the made a lot of football and rugby related cards. Seem to sell between 20 and 90 pounds depending on condition and subject matter.

I think it's a guy called Burnley getting congratulated by his mates for getting a BJ under the umbrella. Trouble is she's just bitten it off and stuck it up between the 'l' and the 'p'. Don't know for sure if it's Rhianna or not though.

Excellent. Thanks very much. I've just researched some of the Baines cards on t'internet - beautiful items but very very expensive. :?

Did they 'dress to the right' in Edwardian times? I didn't know that.

Burnley CC won the Lancashire League in 1893, 1897, 1901, 1906, 1907, 1908, 1913. Then the war intervened and they nearly went bust (possibly because they couldn't sell car parking space for Burnley FC home games, and away supporters weren't using the bar.)

It does have a more crickety look to it than football, come to think of it.
I'm going to ring the auctioneer to see if the back is blank or not, usually there was a shop or business advert on there.
