Missed out on games recently(Man Utd. twice and a replayed cup tie). The list of results tells me that along with older relatives I went to Ewood Park. Sat in front of the old Nuttall St. stand on the running track.with other children.of.my age. Not at all bothered that the home team lost. Was this the beginnings of football rivalry in my brief time as a football fan? .......... I hope so.

Good point away at The Hawthorns. Dad always used to rave about this WBA side as being one of the most attractive teams to watch and was packed full of England internationals including Don Howe, Ronnie Allen, Derek Kevan and, of course, Sir Bobby.
Mac was missing again for us, as was Pilky who was absent for his only game of the season. So, a draw was a decent enough result for us and we were, at last, showing some signs of consistency.

WBA were called The Throstles back then. No Baggies in sight.

Baggies has been around for well over a century so you are wrong on that one. Throstles is also a nickname.

Strange the bits and pieces you remember from games........Due mainly to his unbelievable pace Ray Pointer would normally find a way to avoid a heavy tackle, but not this time. Don Howe hit Ray with a crunching tackle which resulted in our man ending the match lame. Dad said not to worry Ray will find a way to be fit for the next match.......he wasn't wrong.

Don Howe was the sort of player who today would be described as uncompromising...in other words he didn't any prisoners with his tackling. It took a lot to put Ray Pointer out of a game including crashing into the perimeter wall in one game and then carrying on...of course no subs then.
Burnside was also a fine player in the West Brom side.

Bobby Robson wasn’t a bad player either

Burnside was a good player and he entertained fans all over the country with his mastery of 'keepy-uppies often in the pre kick-off warm-up.
I always remember WBA as The Throstles too. Didn't know that Baggies had been around for so long.
