Re: South Africa v England 4th Test
Clinical from England again, true the Saffers have been poor since the 1st test, but there is plenty of positives England can take from the series.
Pope has blossomed and will be in the test side for many years,Sibley's showing he can develop into a solid test opener, ditto Crawley, and don't forget Rory Burns, that's a strong quartet to choose from, competition for places is what England have been crying out for for years.
Stokes and Root have stepped up when needed, with bat and ball,Bess played a large part in the 3rd test win,and provides an option on a turning track.
Wood has impressed with bat and ball, after his long absence from the test fold,Sam Curran continues to produce the goods when called upon.
Stuart Broad just keeps on going and taking wickets.
And don't forget this is an England squad missing Anderson,Archer and Burns.
The only concern is the number 7 slot,Buttler failed again today, and surely Foakes when fit has to be given the gloves,Denly's had a decent run at 3,but age is against him and you have to go with the young pups in that case, they're the future and according to Root the focus is reclaiming the Ashes in 2 years time.
The encouraging aspect is the amount of young players that hopefully will be maturing by the time of the next tour down under,Burns,Sibley,Pope,Crawley,Sam Curran and Bess should all have their best years ahead of them, and if Wood and Archer stay injury free England might at last have a pace attack to trouble the Aussies on their home turf.

Great analysis tiger
But disagree on Roots view that Ashes should be the focus.Win or draw it's a fantastic performance in South Africa and the next focus should be Sri Lanka then the home tests in the summer
Sibley looks solid as opener not so sure about Crawley yet but hopefully will come good
Woakes still gets my vote over Curran but Foakes deffo gets in next instead of Buttler in Sri Lanka

Pretty easy to be fair, with all the injuries etc, we made quite light work of SA
Those that came in have done very well, which is good news for us.
All to a man played their part.

Re: South Africa v England 4th Test
I certainly wasn't expecting this sort of series result after the first test but we've done really, really well since.

Re: South Africa v England 4th Test
S Africa now look a very poor, demoralised side, on their knees. All credit to Root and his men particularly Wood who continues to defy his injury problems, also the new test batsmen.
Good times ahead I hope.

Loads of positives from this series.
The opening order and getting a decent start - and that’s mostly without Rory Burns.
The bowling has been very good - if we can keep Wood fit this summer and get Archer back fit then we have at last 2 opening fast bowlers to replace Jimmy A and Broad.
Root found some runs
Pope was brilliant
Stokes immense again - got to be up there as best cricketer in the world at moment but big danger he is going to get injured as he has been carrying a knock for a while now.
Only real downside has been Butler’s batting - his test place has got to be in danger now.

I'd like to see Ben Foakes given a decent run as wicketkeeper now, and let Buttler concentrate on the white ball stuff. Get the feeling they'll stick with him for a bit longer yet though...TVC15 wrote: ↑Mon Jan 27, 2020 3:31 pmLoads of positives from this series.

Re: South Africa v England 4th Test
It's good how we've finally found our 'Test Cricket' heads.
Accept SA aren't the side they have been and, they've got internal stuff going on, but it's been brilliant watching us play proper cricket!

Re: South Africa v England 4th Test
Good analysis by Tiger76 above.
SA are "in transition" so weren't at their usual strength maybe- but England really did an excellent job despite a bad start with losing 1st test + injuries/illness etc.
Up to 3rd now in the test rankings and not far behind Oz (India 120 points, Oz 108, England 105, NZ 105, SA down to 98 now, Sri Lanka 92, Pakistan 85, WI 81 etc
Hopefully we can have another good away series in Sri Lanka in March then good performances at home this summer (3 tests v WI and 3 v Pakistan). Things are looking much better now on the batting front and (fitness allowing) the bowling attack looks v strong.
