You were never really here

Post by cricketfieldclarets » Sat Jan 25, 2020 11:05 pm

Anyone seen this film? starring Joaquin Phoenix of Joker. Similar character in many ways.

Just watched it after coming highly recommended and much like joker not sure what all the fuss was all about. Have I missed something.

It's how our fans may look back on our time in the sun in half a dozen years....

My prediction is if you've watched Joker, you didn't understand it and thought it was rubbish.

Joaquin Phoenix is great as always but I thought is was a bit of a drag. Not sure if there's anything worth taking from it. Came across as the kind of film that probably worked much better in the screenwriters mind than it did in actual film.

Your prediction is wrong. But that’s nothing new.

I think like Joker. Phoenix was brilliant playing the character he was asked to play. But like Joker the film was trying too hard to be too clever, mysterious and dark.

That makes absolute no sense whatsoever. It's a movie that so many people can understand. It's a lot about mental health, and how the general public deal with it and how they react to it. Sure, it's mysterious and dark - as it should be - that's the whole point of the film.

I loved Joker. Couldn't give a pi$$ for superhero cinematic universes and such, but Joker was a genuinely brilliant standalone film. One of the best films of the year for me. Phoenix is the best actor on the planet IMO, now Daniel Day Lewis has gone back into retirement. 'Her' and 'The Master' are superb films that work so well because of his performances.

I went with my girlfriend to watch Joker on the first night and she isn't one for anything horror - how I got her to go and see IT I have no idea. But as we walked out, one of the first things I said was, "He has got to get an oscar for that" - that's how good I thought he was.

He's been nominated for an oscar, so we'll see... but he was brilliant.

Phoenix is great in both. I agree. But don’t rate either film.

He won the Screen Actors Guild award and the Golder Globe, which, if you win them, are usually precursors to an Oscar. It's a little bit meaningless, anyway. Don't need the bloody Academy to tell me a good performance when I see one!

Will have a look at the Japanese one thanks.

Think the two mentioned here are the sort where people pretend there’s a deeper meaning that they understand that others don’t.
