Music lovers
The Beatles first record played on Radio Luxembourg "Love me Do" is up for Auction tomorrow, will be interesting to see just how much it brings at sale. The guy who's selling it was the DJ who payed it on radio Luxembourg.(yes I listened to it live )
It is expecting to bring around £20.000 and has been signed and authenticity confirmed by Paul McCartney. What a pity Hampstead Claret isn't around anymore for this as he was a massive music lover..

Yes, I used to particularly enjoy the 'music of 2019,20 etc.' threads. Spunkybackpack and edison used to feature but the recommendations for new music, who ever they were from, were always appreciated.

Anyone remember Stackridge? Been listening to then a lot recently after not hearing them for years. Variation, musical ability and excellent sense of humour when they wanted. If you listen to the fairly lengthy 'Slark' you will be whistling it for hours after.

Re: Music lovers
I can remember my sister listening to Luck, Lucky, Luxembourg. More static than music, the reception was terrible.
It got me thinking of those days sat in the back of my dads car, with the transistor radio, trying to get the scores from the other games. You had to move the radio every time you went around a corner just to keep reception. Halcyon days, who would ever have thought we would get DAB.

Always just as they start talking about stuff you actually want to listen to

My wife always insists on having DAB on in her car and I've told her it just isn't good in cars. She says it's better quality sound, to which I reply yeah, but only when you can actually hear it. FFS it even loses Radio Lancashire and that comes through on 2 tin cans and a piece of string.

An update on the sale at auction..
The first Beatles record to be played on the radio has been sold for £17,000 at auction in Merseyside. Radio Luxembourg was first to air the track - or any Beatles record - on October 5 1962. The song featured Sir Paul McCartney and John Lennon on vocals - but record label EMI printed Lennon-McArtney on the record.1 hour ago..
Re: Music lovers
Weird what people will pay for records. The chunk of vinyl itself even if it is a Radio Station Demo Copy is not particularly rare just the fact that it was the first Beatles record played. And how can Paul McCartney possibly know that it is what they say it is.
Re: Music lovers
He's probably got 30% of the sale price. He needs the money.

numbers involved them banging and crashing metal dustbin lids for a track called "Let There Be Lids".
Daft as brushes.

It chucked it down all day and they were handing out free plastic sheets to sit on and stick over your head.
Can't remember any of the other bands that day, except for Sutherland Brothers and Quiver.
Anyone else there ?

Yes I was, it was the first time I ever heard them. It p!ssed down all day. They were the only ones who brought the crowd to life. They performed Let There Be Lids (complete with dustbin lids). Absolutely nuts. Ha ha...what a coincidence bud.Funkydrummer wrote: ↑Tue Jan 28, 2020 3:58 pmI saw Stackridge in Clitheroe Park back in about 1972/3 or so, and if I remember correctly one of their

Brilliant, I'll bet we were in the same, heaving pubs too, trying to dry off before getting soaked again.
Great, heady days.
Can you remember who else was on the bill that day ?

Re: Music lovers
As you said the Sutherlands but also Greenslade (great band and I saw them again later at the Free Trade Hall - still listen to them), Byzantium, Longdancer (an accoustic trio) Fumble (never heard a thing about them after) and a couple of others who have obviously left no mark. Stackridge performed some songs that went on to be classics in their concerts, Dorah the Female Explorer, Do the Stanley and the amazingly fast and furious (and funny) Galloping Goucho.Funkydrummer wrote: ↑Wed Jan 29, 2020 9:35 amBrilliant, I'll bet we were in the same, heaving pubs too, trying to dry off before getting soaked again.

As you say great days and yeah we did shelter form the monsoon that happened in a couple of pubs. I remember a group of us eating a huge block of cheese as it's all we had to eat that day (funny how these things come back to you).

Incidentally I don't know if you have heard much by the Korgis but they featured a couple of members of Stackridge. Something I only found out about quite recently.

Cheers mate, a good night is assured as they are an excellent live band with top class musicians.
I've heard of the Korgis, but not heard anything by them so will give them a coat of looking at.

Re: Music lovers
Watching the Cheese Shop again today it got me thinking, did they do it in several takes or have a very cleverly hidden auto-cue/script? The reason being I find it hard to believe Cleese could rhyme off all those cheeses from memory. If he did that is quite amazing.
Re: Music lovers
Not sure Ian ... but Cleese did a lot of those monologues like "The Parrot Sketch" etc so quite possiblyhouseboy wrote: ↑Wed Jan 29, 2020 4:18 pmWatching the Cheese Shop again today it got me thinking, did they do it in several takes or have a very cleverly hidden auto-cue/script? Re: Music lovers
Nice one bud. They were from Bristol I recall and spoke with strong West country accents. Amazing that even 3 of us were there - it wasn't exactly a big festival even when it didn't rain. Only band I can think of who, in the space of one 40 minute album, could have you laughing and smiling then drifting off into some dreamy beautiful stuff. Should have been bigger than they were. I always described them as the Beatles meets the Kinks with a dash of the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band. George Martin of the Beatles fame produced their Man in a Bowler Hat album, and you can tell.Wile E Coyote wrote: ↑Wed Jan 29, 2020 4:53 pmyes, I was, we met stackridge, nice bunch of lads too.

Re: Music lovers
Glad you like. If you want to listen to some stand out stuff listen to:
Slark - long but worth it and the main theme will stick with you for ages.
Dorah the Female Explorer - a couple of minutes of childish nonsense that will have you tapping your feet.
Syracuse the Elephant - another long piece that is sad/comedy.
If you’ve listened to The Man in the Bowler Hat album you might have listened to the Galloping Groucho but if not do - it is Stackridge are their finest.
For lyrical humour - Marzo Plod - brilliant.
All good stuff and a remnant if an age when musical ability and the ability to just write good songs was paramount.
