Over the weekend, there were 2 major incidents on the roads around Skipton.

Both incidents had fatalities which no doubt will have long standing implications on all people involved and their friends and family.

I won't name, names on here but I am aware that one of those fatalities was a claret just finding his way in life. I didn't know him but my heart goes out to him and his family.

Another loss to the claret family. Helps put life in perspective I guess....

I was coming out of Skipton the other day..rush hour and the driving instructor had the driver turning right at the junction to go up the A59.....not for the faint hearted.

The one on Saturday night appeared to be on the A629 between Crosshills and Skipton.

We were turned back by the police at the Kildwick roundabout.

It's usually the junction opposite The Bull where accidents happen.

Wasn't too long ago that further along the A59 towards ilkley where someone was killed.

As someone who probably drives 40-50,000 miles a year, you become complacent and every now and again you get a wake up call. I don’t always drive like I know a should, but I’ve certainly improved ten fold over the last 12 months, the thought of my family getting that knock scares me to death

As well as those who have sadly passed and or been injured along with their families, really have to feel for the emergency services. Especially firefighters. To see this must really affect them.

It's certainly far reaching - when this happens, it's like dropping a pebble in water with the ripple effects which can be far reaching as you say.

It's amazing that we all get into potential killing machines each day and the amount of drivers out there that risk their own lives and others by doing stupid things. Just over the weekend, I saw;

- 4 people on mobile phones texting.
- A mainline bus go through red lights near prairie football pitches
- A orange van being driven like an idiot, which was later reported for crashing into a wall.
- 3 people racing down the M65 weaving in and out like they were playing Gran Turismo, or GTA.

It's like the wild west out there at times. It could be any one of us that's in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Absolutely. And like 1989 drive w lot every year.

I try to have a lot more patience these days.
Try to leave gaps. Let traffic flow. Drive at my own pace.
Avoid rush hours unless absolutely essential. While the roads are a lot busier and slower moving, this is the time you seem to see most on phones or distracted because they’ve lost patience.

I don’t get all the rushing and aggressive driving. And now when I can if I get some dickhead driving like that behind me I will let them go and be their own problem somewhere else. Previously I’d have blocked them off or similar.

Driving with plenty of time to spare is always the best way. Against the clock just heightens stress, anxiety, aggression and all other negative behaviours.

Although I have noticed the problem with leaving gaps is most see it as an opportunity to cut in and cut you up.

Some driving instructors have dual controls & can disable & enable & intervene in any dangerous manoeuvres, nevertheless doesn’t detract from possible fear from another driver driving at speed & at the time prior possibly not even being aware of it being a driving instructors car.

I used to travel that route from getting on at nelson & getting off at the B&Q turnoff wasn’t worth my while leaving the LHS lane.

I have had the odd speeding fine for slightly over the legal limit and accept it, but there are some genuinely murderous b******s on our roads. Selfish, uncaring, and unfit to get behind the wheel of a car anytime. They ruin lives on a daily basis, and I detest them.

The orange van crashed into a house wall at the top of Barkerhouse road in Nelson 5 minuites after I had walked past the same spot with the dogs

I hate to sully this thread anyway, and especially because I am a very close friend of the couple involved in the tragic accident near Broughton on Friday night. Please can the person posting the racist remark remove it, because no matter how you try and justify it, the fact that you are stereotyping using one example of dangerous driving is plain wrong. It has nothing to do with either event on Friday or Saturday and the link to those accidents and what you are saying is tenuous at best. There’s enough now in the local media for people to see what the lady tragically killed in Friday night’s accident did for a living and how she helped people of all ethnicities. I know she wouldn’t want her accident to be used to justify remarks like that. I’m not for one second diving in with two feet accusing you of being racist, just pointing out your post is along those lines. Thanks in advance.

Just remove the reference to race. Young males driving too fast is a story as old as cars.

Always sad after a fatal road accident because in the main they are so unavoidable.
