Brentford another ground to be unticked

Post by The Hung Juror » Tue Jan 28, 2020 8:37 am

Brentford’s move next season to a new stadium got me thinking.

How many of the current Premier League and Football League club’s grounds have I had to untick over the years. I’ve got to 17.

White Hart Lane, Maine Road, Ayresome Park, Boothferry Park, Vetchfield, Baseball Ground, Elm Park, Leeds Road, Victoria Ground, Millmoor, Belle Vue, Gay Meadow, Springfield Park, Burnden Park, The County Ground (Northampton), Fellows Park and the Old Showground.

With Scunthorpe about to set a precedent, it would seem with their proposed move from Glanford Park, in having had to untick them twice.

I never went to the Vetch or the Old Show Ground, but to your list I can add, off the top of my head, Eastville, Twerton Park, the Manor Ground, Layer Road and Roker Park.

Filbert Street? Roker Park?

Colchester left Layer Road to move to Cuckoo Farm a few years back as well.
Did Burnley play a friendly against Morecambe at Christie Park?

I've been to a lot of those as well. Unfortunately once got into a spot of bother after a game at White Hart Lane. I used to love Leeds Road because they had a Longside similar to ours (and the Kippax) so it felt like 'home'. Ayresome was also bad news because I went there to watch a pre-season game and saw Dobson get his leg broke (or at least a serious leg injury but I think it was a break). Went to Boothferry more than any other ground except for ours, Ewood and Burnden.

Maine Road and the Boleyn Ground spring to mind.

I've just totalled up that I've had to untick nine current EFL and EPL grounds and I'll soon lose Griffin Park and, quite soon, Goodison Park too. But I've also lost quite a few due to relegation to the Conference/National League, including:

Halifax
Notts County
Stockport (lol)
Wrexham
Chesterfield
York
Chester

You don't untick them - you just get another tick when you go to the new ground.

Of the other 90 teams in the Premier & Football Leagues, I've now seen us play 29 of them on more than one ground. Then I can add Colchester & Shrewsbury where I've seen us play u23 games at their current grounds and first team football at their old ones.

Dean Court? I know they bulldozed the old ground and rotated the pitch 90 degrees but surely it's the same place.

It's not the same place at all. The old ground was flattened, they went off to play somewhere else for a while and the new ground is only partly on the old footprint. If you consider this to be the same ground, then you would need to do the same for Wembley.

Bournemouth themselves consider it to be a different ground.

You could argue, using that logic, that modern day Molineux is a different ground to the one they had pre-1978. All four stands have been demolished and the pitch moved by 30 yards.

Same ground on a different footprint, much like Dean Court. The John Ireland Stand (now the Steve Bull Stand) wiped out an entire street.

I can see we're aren't going to agree on this.

Nothing at all like Bournemouth - I've been on both of their grounds and I've also been on Molineux, back in the 1960s and recently. Ridiculous to offer any comparison. Also, as said, Bournemouth refer to their ground as a new ground, Wolves very definitely don't, it's the same ground.

You might as well throw in Liverpool, Manchester United and several others.

I did almost all on the OP's list, including Griffin Park, but never did Elm Park (Reading) for some reason. As others have said, off the top of my head I can add The Manor Ground (Oxford), Twerton Park (Bath to play Bristol Rovers), Roker Park (Sunderland) Brisbane Rd (Orient), Underhill (Barnet) The Goldstone (BHA), Boleyn Ground (WHU), Dean Court (B'mouth). There must be others I'm too old to remember going to! Even though the wife says I can clearly remember every Burnley result and even the goals going back to my childhood, but never all the things on a shopping list these days!! ;) Weird that.

So what? So have I, albeit my first visit to Wolves in 1986 was before the pitch was moved and the new stand was 100ft from the touchline. But I'm struggling to discern what your visit to Molineux in the 1960s proves.

No it isn't. The whole crux of my argument is a comparison of the two. Both stadiums have been completely rebuilt, both have moved their pitch significantly, one of them by 100ft and the other by rotating it 90 degrees. But they still play at the same address and (sponsorship aside) still have the same stadium name.

Any evidence to back that up? AFCB can describe it any which way they want but it doesn't alter the facts. If I refer to a cat as a dog, it doesn't make it a dog.

Now that's ridiculous. The pitches at Anfield and Old Trafford haven't moved. And that, in my opinion, is the determining factor.

I totally agree that Wolves haven't moved grounds. It's an obviously ludicrous suggestion and one that I made to illustrate the point that Bournemouth haven't moved ground either.

Got Twerton Park in twice:

Once watching Bath vs Tamworth

Second time was a pre-season friendly Bath vs Burnley.

Game was notable for them scoring a goal when they were trying to play the ball back to Brian Jensen after a drop ball.
It sailed over his head.
They let us score from the kick off in return. I think George Porter made a rare appearance and possibly scored our “free goal”.
Highlight of the day (as often with poxy non-league grounds) was the club house.

I totally agree that Wolves haven't moved grounds. It's an obviously ludicrous suggestion and one that I made to illustrate the point that Bournemouth haven't moved ground either.
Bournemouth say they have moved ground and, having been to both, it is clearly obvious that they have. I'll take their view of it over yours. Pitch moved? The new ground isn't even on the same footprint. If you don't think they are new grounds then you clearly don't think the Tottenham grounds are either.

Look at aerial photographs of Dean Court before and after. It's the same site.

Not sure how many times we played Bristol Rovers there, think it was about three times. I know why I had to miss a couple of them.

As for the Porter goal, wasn't there for that game either, but they let him go through and score and he failed with his first attempt apparently but stuck the rebound in off the goalkeeper.

Hahaha. Not *quite* true but close.

One of their defenders got all mardy about it and stuck a foot out which very nearly tripped him but he tucked it away very adeptly.

Good finish, in the end. :D

FWIW, to ClaretTony and Sausage, there was a debate on a Facebook group a while ago before Spurs ground was completed, and many different opinions were put forward.

The consensus seemed to be that if the entire ground was done at the same time, especially when the club had to move out for a time while work was carried out, it’s a new ground.

If the club do the work piece meal over a number of years, like most clubs who do the work over decades, it’s the old ground redeveloped.

So in that case Wolves would be the original regardless of the expanded footprint, but Spurs is a new ground regardless of it overlapping the old footprint, and Bournemouth is a new ground too, what with it all being flattened and rebuilt.

Just an opinion though, but one which seemed to get a lot of agreement.

If Bournemouth is a new ground they why isn't Preston's?
