Michael Palin - What a Decent Guy

Post by houseboy » Wed Jan 29, 2020 9:38 am

Watching the TV Awards last night and Michael Palin won the Lifetime achievement award (I think that's what it's called). His acceptance speech was understated, short and humble. Instead of thanking all the world and his wife and making it all about him he just spent a few quiet minutes paying tribute the genious and massive influence of Terry Jones. Obviously holding back the tears he made a mockery of the over-long and self indulgent speeches of many of the other winners. Moving and simple - lovely guy.

One of my all time heroes. Great bloke and a great talent who, along with the other members
of the Python team, entertained, informed and amused me through my teens and early 20's.

Salt of the earth.

Didn’t see this but he always comes across well. Always seems humble and respectful to others whilst offering humour.

Always been a fan of Palin's.
Don't watch award things on TV, but doesn't come as a surprise at how he came across.
Along with Tony Hancock, Eric & Ernie, the Python stuff was the funniest thing on TV.

Ha ha yeah. Actually I've been looking at things lately and decided that my life, at the moment, is going well, nothing to moan about really all things considered, so away with all the crap and stupidity. I'll allow people to say what they want about me, I'll probably never meet 99% of them (at least knowingly). Things get heated on here sometimes and for what? Nothing to get mad about really is there?

Don't know anything about his comedy, probably not my cup of tea I'd imagine but I get round to watching all of his travel series at least every couple of years. I do like them.

The best acceptance speech I ever saw was John Wayne getting his Oscar for " True Grit " in 1970 ...... after 41 years of films, he spoke for less than 2 minutes, " If I'd have known, I'd have put that eye-patch on a long time ago ! " ....

His performance in Life of Brian should have won the Oscar. So many characters all played to perfection.

You would expect him to clamber on hands and knees, then scramble onto the stage, breathless and shaking to the microphone and say.........

Its!!

I know for a fact he was a big fan of Barnstoneworth United, back in the day when Haggerty F, Haggery P and Davit took the field. He could name every player since 1946.

Ripping Yarns - which Palin co-wrote with Terry J - is one of my all-time favourite box-sets. Great commentary too.

Python (and all it's progeny) was a big part of my youth.

RIP Terry Jones.

There is a lot of that on here but, as I say, everyone takes it too seriously. I still can't get over 350-odd pages of pointless Brexit arguments when most people know full well that at that point no-one was going to change their mind. Ha ha!! Life's too short bud.
