6 Nations Championship starts this weekend
Wales-Italy
Ireland-Scotland
Both the above are on the Saturday
France-England follows on Sunday.
Is it a 3 way fight for the title between England,Ireland and Wales, the WC results would suggest that's the case, but this tournament has the ability to throw up the odd surprise.

France have the ability if they could mould a team out of their surfeit of quality players.
Wales too many injuries to repeat this year, I think.

Unfortunately England starts at 1500 hrs whilst I'm still on the Turf.
Going to record it and keep away from any news bulletins in the meantime (hopefully)

Re: 6 Nations Championship starts this weekend
As per each year, I'm looking forward to the tournament. The other 5 nations have already named their match-day squads of 15+8 but England have delayed until tomorrow (Friday) morning.
If England can win away in France on Sunday, they've the other 2 favourites (Ireland & Wales) to play at home so would be tournament favourites as they don't lose too many at TW. France have quite a few youngsters in their team for Sunday but you can never write of the French; it's the hardest to call of the three as the other two are expected to be reasonably comfortable home wins.
If anybody is interested enough to want to do a fantasy team for the tournament, there's one at https://fantasy.sixnationsrugby.com/#/game/equipe/me
Free to enter and not too complicated; I'm having a bash to add a bit more interest to the games not involving England.

But annoying it clashes on Sunday. I’ll have to make do with Ireland Scotland on Saturday.

I have to agree with Tiger as i see it as one Ireland , England or Wales .
The only game that looks tricky is France v England as it could go either way .
Now will stick my neck out and say England to win it with losing one game .
England
Ireland
Wales
France
Italy

Looking forward to this, entered the Rugby Club predictor Competition, as I suspect have " Iluvmywife " and " cabello " ....
At present, it looks like it could be very open .... which is great for the neutral, England have only two home games this time, but they are Wales & Ireland ! As has already been said, much could hinge on England's game in Paris tomorrow !
I don't think I'll be alone of thinking of " Hampstead " as the games kick off, he loved his Rugby ! Three points against the Gunners, an English win in Paris followed by a Springsteen Concert would have been " A Perfect Day " for him !!

Re: 6 Nations Championship starts this weekend
Just watching the run up to the start of the opening game between Wales and Italy and I don't think that I've heard such a cacophony of noise on a TV programme in all my life. It's been an assault on the ear drums.
Maybe it's my age, but is there really any need for all that noise ? In the initial introduction you could hardly hear the narrator for the very heavy bass on the intro music. As I type, they are trying to speak in the commentary box and there's some bloke blasting out what he percieves as hype and atmosphere and the pundits are constantly battling against the numpty.
Rant over, sound off and off to Padiham for a peaceful atmos.

Remember that episode fondly,of course the twist was that the game was called off due to flooding, and this was back in the 70's well before the social media age,how on earth you can manage to avoid hearing any results these days IDK,with the plethora of different media outlets it's virtually impossible.Bosscat wrote: ↑Sat Feb 01, 2020 12:35 pmGood luck with that Fd... reminds me of the Likely Lads sketch when they were trying to avoid the England v Bulgaria football score in "No Hiding Place"

Easy BP win for Wales 42-0,Josh Adams HT,the Italians were poor, and you do wonder how long their presence can be justified in this event,it's over 5 years since their last SN victory, they really are just making up the numbers these days.
Ire-Sco should be more competitive surely.

I agree. The rubbish being played while the match was on, albeit during the stoppages, was embarrassing.Funkydrummer wrote: ↑Sat Feb 01, 2020 2:08 pmJust watching the run up to the start of the opening game between Wales and Italy and I don't think that I've heard such a cacophony of noise on a TV programme in all my life. A win for the Irish but boy they made hard work of that, credit to the Scots they were markedly improved from their WC shambles, and on the balance of play should have probably won, just like in footy if you don't take your chances you'll pay the price,Hogg dropping the ball when poised to score was a big turning point.

Re: 6 Nations Championship starts this weekend
Yep it played out as most would see it , but the Irish were not really on their game today .
Italy were poor and the Scots had their chance but blew it , Hogg was shocking as all he had to do was fall over the line but dropped the ball .
Wales are yet to be tested now will the Irish test them next week is a good question .
Lets see what happens in Paris tomorrow .

Re: 6 Nations Championship starts this weekend
So like most did'nt get to see much of the game in Paris , but watching the highlights French were very strong but it seems that Jones got his starting line up all wrong and were put to the sword , well for a long time .
England came back into the game at the end but that just sums up the French for you hot and cold in one game .

Re: 6 Nations Championship starts this weekend
That England reverse in Paris is good for the Championship, throws the whole thing wide open, clearly Shaun Edwards is having an impact that French defence was rock solid for the most part, despite England having lots of pressure in the French 22 they lacked the finesse to create openings Jonny May accepted, the French were brilliant for 60 minutes, and they have a young emerging team which could if they continue developing be a match for anyone when they host the next WC in 2023.

Re: 6 Nations Championship starts this weekend
Yes .. for one it would give each Nation 3 home/3 away games a season. Georgia are the " 7th team " in Europe now, but 40 years ago Romania were a strong force ! Perhaps four, " 7 Nations " leagues should be further developed, with a " home/away " play off system between the top and bottom of each league, which would improve standards all round ..
Burnley born Mike Walker-Fitton is a current Spanish International, having qualified on residency grounds. He played in the Spanish side that beat Russia 31-12 in Sochi, last Saturday, winning his 10th cap, as a Lock forward ...

On the field, the France result opens things up nicely with both Wales and Ireland having to travel to Twickenham. Even with England's performance it would be a brave man to back the Grand-slam for anyone now.
On the English performance, the most disappointing thing for me was I couldn't see what they were trying to do.

... and some wonder why the name ‘ dingles’ is used. Unbelievable pigeon holed narrow minded nonsense. I bet you still describe colleagues at work as ‘Management’ and ‘workers’ and ‘them’ and ‘us’. It’s like saying I don’t like Rugby League because it’s for blue collar workers. Nonsense it’s just a sport and you either like it you don’t. Millions do and clearly they are not all ‘elite’.Wile E Coyote wrote: ↑Wed Feb 05, 2020 12:38 amutter ***** as a sport, BBC driven pap once again. loved by the husbands of horse owning women. media game for the business types and university elite.

I'd like a div 2 Europe with:-
Georgia
Germany
Netherlands
Romania
Belgium
one of Spain or Portugal or Russia. The other two can play in Div 3 eventually.
Promotion/Relegation every 2 years with the results of 10 games added up. 1 up, 1 down.
This might sound unfair, but I'm old enough to remember Romania being way better in their day than Italy are now. I seem to remember watching them play in Cardiff (not the one that we lost), and their beating most of the other home nations. If they had became the sixth of the 6 nations (as perhaps they ought at that point) they would by now have been replaced by Italy, just as Georgia are being considered now as a replacement for Italy.
Re: 6 Nations Championship starts this weekend
It already exists Tim,
div 2:
Georgia
Spain
Romanian
Russia
Belgium
Portugal
div3:
Netherlands
Switzerland
Ukraine
Germany
Poland
Lithuania
then conference divisions below that.

Re: 6 Nations Championship starts this weekend
Should be more interesting after this weekends games. Think our defeat has opened up the tournament. Romania were a strong team for quite a while. Italy don’t seem to have improved much and not sure what they offer. Should have remained as 5 nations. There are other competitions for the other other teams.

New Zealand played their first game of Test Cricket in 1930, but failed to win a single one until 1956 ...
Admit the Georgians, let's have 3 Home games each, an extra weekend of fixtures, and a play-off system, all live on TV and further incur the wrath of our resident class warrior, " WileECoyote " !

Re: 6 Nations Championship starts this weekend
So onto week two .
First up Ireland v Wales , now going to be a dour game i would say can Wales mountain their level from last week or on the other hand can Ireland step up . Have to go with Wales here , now close game but they seem to be a better all round side , hey hope i have got that one wrong .
Scotland v England , both have to win simple as that having lost their first games . Hard call really as the Scots really put it up to the Irish last week and England were way off their game for 60 minutes .
Go on England to find their mojo and to get back to winning ways .
France v Italy , should be no contest as France to get a bonus point in the first half then ring the changes and Italy to score two tries in the 2nd half .
We will soon find out .

Re: 6 Nations Championship starts this weekend
3 home wins in week 1,but i don't see a repeat this week.
Wales have too many match-winners for Ireland to combat, and the Irish weren't impressive against the scots,Wales won't squander chances like the Scots did,Wales by 7-10 points.
Calcutta Cup-it's amazing that barely 3 months after reaching a WC final, defeat here would put Eddie Jones under immense pressure,England's away form doesn't make good reading, they've lost 5 of their last 7 away games in the Six Nations, and the Scots are a force at Murrayfield, and are arguably in better form, the weather could also play a part,it's forecast to be wet and windy by Saturday afternoon, this will suit the hosts, and i'm going to give them the edge,it'll be close though and the kicks/penalties could prove the difference, discipline will by key,Scotland by 3-6 points.
France-Italy perfect warm-up for France before their trip to Cardiff, they'll wrap up a BP victory against a hapless Italian side.

The Irish win by 10 points , now take this as a somewhat close game forget it as Ireland were really on top for most of the game and made Wales look poor .
Roll on two weeks time and Twickers for the triple crown .

Big BP win for Ireland 24-12 over the Welsh, much improved display as well from the men in green,Wales made too many errors when in good areas.
Great atmosphere at Murrayfield,Scottish rugby is rejuvenated after last week's much stronger showing,England will need to be at their best to get a result.

As above. Wales have too many injuries for this seasons tournament.
Poor display really, although had the parkes "try" counted then some of those easy penalties would have added 3 points rather than been kicked into the corner leading to nothing.
Didn't deserve the win though.
Standings card could/should have appeared rather sooner. How much clearer could "HANDS AWAY" have been shouted at him 5 yards from the line?

Re: 6 Nations Championship starts this weekend
Of course England still have triple crown hopes of their own, hopefully the weather will be calmer, and we get a proper game of rugby,Ireland were impressive today, and are improving by the game as Andy Farrell's blueprint takes hold,Twickers will be a test for them though, and in terms of the championship don't rule out the French.
Scotland once again emerge as gallant losers it's a national pastime for them, but if you don't put points on the board when you're on top,as they have been at various periods in both their games you'll pay the price.

Re: 6 Nations Championship starts this weekend
When (I cant contemplate an "if") France beat Italy this afternoon, that will leave Fr and Ireland as the only two 100% teams - not a great surprise given those two have started with 2 home games.
The Championship often rests on which of the "big teams" can beat another big team away from home.
If Wales v France & England v Ireland go with the home team next round, we'll have Fr, Eng, W, Ire all on 2 wins/1 loss. Sc and Italy battling for the wooden spoon probably. All still to play for.
Paris looks windy but dry for this afternoon's game, hopefully see a bit of running rugby and a few tries, need some entertainment to make up for not seeing WHU beaten.

Re: 6 Nations Championship starts this weekend
So after a week break we are back in action tomorrow .
So first up Italy v Scotland , now to be honest The Scots have been close in their two games but due to mistakes by Hogg they could have gotten something in both games . Now cant see Italy lasting 80 minutes and the Scots will win by 14 .
Good game up after this as Wales v France has all the makings of good game . Wales have to win simple as that what will the French do away from home is a good question . Going for a home win just by 2 points .
Sunday the Irish ride into to town with their tails up England have looked so so really could be a day for the boys in Green so the Irish to win by the mistakes of the English by 5 points .
As for Claret4me, ground control me bollockxx

Indeed we are " Tribesmen " ...
I fear Hogg has run out of ways to f**k up games for Scotland, so I take the Scots to win by 9 -12 points !
I can't see France travelling too well, so Wales by 10 -13 points !
As for England v Ireland, despite Eddie Jones's selections, I think England by 8 - 15 points !
Couple that with a Burnley home win over Bournemouth and t'Roverrrs suffering a humiliating reverse at Brentford would make for a perfect weekend !!

Scotland, Ireland and Wales to win. Missing tomorrow’s games and the football unfortunately but will be tuned in to England game on Sunday. Good weekend of rugby ahead.

Reasonable summary Scotland should win in Rome, but the pressure is building as they keep letting games slip out of their grasp,a defeat tomorrow and the knives will be out for Townsend,i agree the Scots will come strong in the final 20,and win by 10-14.Tribesmen wrote: ↑Fri Feb 21, 2020 8:04 pmSo after a week break we are back in action tomorrow .

The other 2 are real heavyweight clashes,i feel home advantage will be pivotal in both.
Wales have to respond following their poor display in Dublin, and they will, but this French outfit are a different animal under Shaun Edwards, and Wales will need to be at their best,4-6 point win for the Welsh, but it'll be tense.
Hard to judge England so far, they were poor in the first 40 in Paris, but rallied strongly in the 2nd half, and could have even completed a storming comeback if they'd taken all their chances. And the game at Murrayfield was a lottery in those conditions.
Ireland are 2/2 but looked shaky against the Scots, however they impressed in their victory over the Welsh.
I'd plump for England by 3-5 points, but not with any great confidence.
It seems obvious to state, but the latter 2 matches will probably depend on the kickers, and the amount of penalties conceded, discipline will be key in a febrile atmosphere.
