Jeff Hendrick

Post by jojomk1 » Sat Feb 01, 2020 7:29 am

So will Jeff sign a new contract before next season starts
Of late, with the injury to JBG, he starts games wide right - certainly a much better option out there than either Lennon or Brady for me
With the addition of Brownhill to the squad does this give us a further option wide right
The player and club have both said that contract talks have been ongoing from last October, but I remember that last summer it was the club that took up the option of a further year on his then existing contract, rather than Jeff signing a new, longer deal
I think it's from today that he can sign a pre contract agreement with any club outside of England and Wales and many Irish guys do like to play for Celtic

I hope he signs. I think some don't recognise the work he gets through in games but instead chose to scorn the odd wayward pass.

I think if he was going to sign he'd have done it by now, just a personal feeling. I wouldn't mind him getting another deal, but think a move could be good for him tbh.

In some eyes, hasn’t really recovered from his misuse earlier in his Burnley career.

We are UNDOUBTEDLY better when Jeff plays wide right, coming inside to try to find the pass, or staying out and delivering a ball into the danger area. He’s hardworking and effective there. He’s even an option in the middle if we are stuck, but where he ISNT an option is trying to gel together our attackers and a midfield who are reluctant (conditioned?) to get forward.

Previously, in order to have a £13m player on the pitch, we ‘found’ a job for him. That was wrong. It didn’t work for him whatsoever, and he’s still paying the price for mistakes that weren’t necessarily his.

At a Q&A night Dyche alluded to Hendrick (or his agent at least) believing he can get more money elsewhere. If that is the case his destination won’t be Celtic.

Would love to see him stay. He’s the closest player we’ve got to someone who can play the Arfield role and always look more solid with him in the side. I think if we can get a right sided Charlie Taylor in it would really help him to have a bit more freedom and drift in.

Hope he stays. But I suspect he wants either more money than we're willing to offer, or a chance to play in the position he views as his best - at the heart of midfield.

I d have him in the heart of midfield every week
Still can’t understand why during our poor run pre leicester he was never used there in place of jack cork

Would love him to sign but I suspect he won’t. We’re a better side when he’s on the grass.

After the horrific abuse he has received why would he sign a new deal?

Hope he signs, I am sick and tired of some of the ignorant comments he gets. All players make mistakes and have poor games but when he does its magnified by ten.

Its ok he's getting some great help and support from ex players like Jensen, McDonald, Edgar, Eagles and Stanilas who also suffered some horrendous abuse from a section of Burnley fans

I think Eddie Howe has set up a foundation to help footballers abused by fans so he may benefit from that too.

That first sentence matches what I was told a while ago, and probably specifically the bit in brackets.

I honestly don’t know how we will ever sign anyone again with our lack of budget, small club in a small town and a record of horrific abuse.

No doubt he can. Especially on a free.

He won’t get first choice football at a higher standard than we are. But I bet clubs like Newcastle, Villa and Brighton would offer him a good wage. And even the likes of Everton would probably offer him good wages as a squad player.

I could only see Jeff playing central midfield in a promoted side, don't think he has the energy or passing range to succeed there in an established Premier League side.

He's a really disciplined performer without the ball. particularly when played wide where he more then plays his part in shutting the opposition attacks down. Worth his spot away from home but at the Turf we need someone with more pace and ability going forward to add to our attacking threat.

I'm not really sure what's in Jeff's mind tbh, unless, as seems most likely, he ultimately has every intention of signing, but is milking it for every cent he can screw out of the club. Surely he won't get a better deal at a "better" club. I've no issue with him staying, but he always looks like he's playing at the very limit of his ability and some games (against the top sides) he can really struggle. If he leaves us I'd be surprised if his only route isn't effectively down. Even sideways would be unlikely imo.

I'll be sad to see him go.

He's got four years worth of PL experience and has only just turned 28, can play well in a number of positions and pops up with some important goals. That sort of profile is worth it's weight in gold really for a club like us.

I definitely hope he signs, much maligned, but that's football, those nay sayers are a minority.
In a side of hard working players Jeff can stand out for his efforts.
Asked to pick up the cudgel in a variety of roles, and is always willing.
I'd still prefer to see him in midfield, he plays better with the game in front of him, but not strong enough in the tackle to play the defensive midfield role.
At the end of the day we don't have a clue what his other options are, he could well be hedging his bets to see what is out there, it doesn't mean we won't turn out to be his best option.

One of those players who swims with the tide a bit. Our best performances in recent seasons usually has him in the team playing well, but he does wear the look of being a bit off the pace sometimes, and doesn't exactly exude leadership qualities. Could be filed under enigmatic.

I always feel Hendrick had the potential to be perhaps a better than he is. I remember they did a profile on him on MOTD after the 3-2 home win against Bournemouth when he scored a cracker, made raking passes and generally marshalled the midfield. And another game that season when he played alongside Barton in a midfield two against Leicester when we won 1-0 and he was sensational.

I don't think we have seen that player often enough. Still one of best on the ball for us, with craft and a bit of skill, but as Spice suggests, maybe the lack of game time in the centre of the park has held him back a bit.

Hope he signs but maybe his replacement has already been captured in Josh Brownhill - I believe Sheff United were keen, but it looks like they've gone in a more ambitious direction.

I vote yes very underrated he's one that supporters dont forget when he has a poor game yet others get away with it ie wood scores goals but contributes little else imo.

A very useful player because of his ability to do a decent enough job, in a number of positions.

As a regular in any of those positions though, that’s where I begin to question Hendrick.

If he’s prepared to be a utility player, I’d be more than happy for him to sign in again.

Who in their right mind wouldn't want him to sign a new contract. If we were capable of signing a few quality midfield players then I could understand a few people not being fussed but in our current financial position getting Jeff on a new contract is one of the most important bits of business the club is going to do before the next season kicks off

A very suitable 4th choice CM and cover for RM, so would of course hope he signs. I can't see a better team than us going for him, however a side that come up from the Championship may be interested. They'll no doubt offer him a big wage as there will be no fee to pay us.

Brownhill does appear to tick the boxes to replace him though, so it remains to be seen as to whether the club are happy to go with 3 x CM in the summer until next January, with McNeil an option.

In fact, this might be the way Burnley have to go if they are to keep the wages down. 3 CM plus someone else who can cover if it comes to dire straits.

I hope Jeff signs as he’s a useful utility/squad player to have, though let’s be clear he’s doesn’t provide much to a team apart from graft, then again that could be fairly levelled at much of our team. He’s had champ clubs sniffing for ages and I’d imagine a good few could offer him a decent increase in wages .While we continue a policy of low spending and ambition its players like JH who have to pick up the mantle imo

It's not just the wages
When available on a "free" his agent can negotiate a substantial signing on fee and I could see clubs offering as much as £5m if more than one are interested
At his age this will maybe be his last chance of a really good 3/4 year deal to secure his financial future
Would like him to stay but given the above would understand if he decides to move on

I think he has been held back by his versatility and perhaps Westwood and Corks lack of.

As stated above Jeff's worth keeping for his versatility alone, you do have to wonder with the signing of Brownhill if the club's expecting him to move on in the summer, and we're acting accordingly and getting his replacement in early.

Jeff's biggest problem is he''s seen as a jack of all trades master of none type, and he's never nailed down any one position,he's probably best in a RM role, but Brownhill might be ahead of him in the pecking order now.

I think when he leaves he will disappear without trace, he wouldn't get in any other premier league team and if we want our squad to improve he definitely needs upgrading.
