Re: Has a goalkeeper scored against us?
It was Billy O’Rourke RIP. At the Manchester End. I was in there with me Da and it never looked like missing.
McDonough kicked it out of hand from his own box. It was blowing some.
It was the last of 5 games Billy had after Stevo had been sent off against Leicester.

Re: Has a goalkeeper scored against us?
You're right. The Bolton fans were urging their own players to pass back to him, and for him to keep shooting long. It was a joke - but beyond a joke for our group.Stevie2112 wrote: ↑Sat Feb 01, 2020 7:40 pmIt was an extremely windy afternoon,he tried more than once to score. You could just tell it was going to happen!
The odd thing was that it didn't seem to occur to O'Rourke that if he stayed on his line then the ball couldn't bounce over his head and into an empty net and he would have the best part of 80 yards to see it coming and either catch it or palm it away.
Even odder that none of his team-mates or management thought to tell him to stay on his line. We were watching in disbelief and as soon as the ball went in the net we went home. (I never returned to Burnden Park).

Beat me to saying that. I was spitting feathers when it went in, you could see it coming.nil_desperandum wrote: ↑Sat Feb 01, 2020 8:52 pmYou're right. Re: Has a goalkeeper scored against us?
I could well be imagining this, but didn't a 'keeper for Carlisle once score in the final minute
against us up at Carlisle ?
OR
Was it the reverse ?
My brains mashed today after all that racket watching the rugby.

Re: Has a goalkeeper scored against us?
Still puzzles me today why we couldn’t have prevented it. As others have said McDonagh had been trying to score all afternoon.

Re: Has a goalkeeper scored against us?
Jimmy Glass was on loan at Carlisle and scored the goal deep in to injury time to keep Carlisle up and send Scarborough down whose match had finished and whose fans were on the pitch celebrating.Funkydrummer wrote: ↑Sat Feb 01, 2020 9:02 pmI could well be imagining this, but didn't a 'keeper for Carlisle once score in the final minute

Re: Has a goalkeeper scored against us?
He was on loan at Carlisle - Sky did a programme about it last year that might still be on catch up. He was on loan at Burnley in 1996 but never played a first team game.Devils_Advocate wrote: ↑Sat Feb 01, 2020 9:11 pmJimmy Glass was on loan at Carlisle and scored the goal deep in to injury time to keep Carlisle up and send Scarborough down whose match had finished and whose fans were on the pitch celebrating.

One of my mates back then was a massive Scarborough fan on the pitch with his radio screaming at the other fans to stop celebrating cos Carlisle was still playing hence I remember it wellFunkydrummer wrote: ↑Sat Feb 01, 2020 9:18 pmCheers for that DA, what on earth was I thinking ?

If it was 4 days before we beat Spurs, then it would have been Brian Miller's last match in his first spell as Burnley manager.

Glass’s goal wasn’t against us though..........
And I was at Burnden Park with my dad when McDoughnut scored......... the pitch with a massive drop at the edge of it!

Re: Has a goalkeeper scored against us?
I was right behind his goal and yes the conditions played a part. However it was one of the most inept performances I'd ever witnessed from a Burnley side and there's been a few. So much so that I sent a less than complementary letter to Brian Miller. Something I have never done before or since. A week later I received a 3 page hand written response from Brian. To say I was staggered was an understatement. It highlighted to me the measure of him not only as a football manager but also as a great man. Incidentally shortly after that game Brian Miller was replaced by Frank Casper but if there's ever one person who exemplifies Burnley its first and foremost Brian Miller for me.

Re: Has a goalkeeper scored against us?
As poor as we were that day, and as difficult a season as we were having, it was still a shock when Brian was sacked four days after this game and on his birthday. I knew him well, and he bled claret and blue did Brian Miller. Liked him a lot.ashtonlongsider wrote: ↑Sun Feb 02, 2020 8:17 amI was right behind his goal and yes the conditions played a part. I was another who witnessed McDonagh's goal first hand. It really was a lowlight (and there have been more than a few) in anybody's Clarets supporting life and it still makes me shudder (and fall to my knees in gratitude at where we are now!)

Many times on Burnden and the only time I wasn’t on the open end. It was traditionally their end.

From memory, the Manchester end, known locally as the Lever End, (Darcy / Little Lever), was the home end, with away fans in the Railway end until the railway end was sold and became part of a supermarket development, Co-Op possibly?Tricky Trevor wrote: ↑Sun Feb 02, 2020 12:27 pmWould anybody know why we were in the Manchester End?

Re: Has a goalkeeper scored against us?
It was down at the open end that the goal was scored. That end of the ground usually housed away fans in my time of visiting Burnden Park. As said already, it was an abject performance from us. The 'return' fixture had been played at Turf Moor on the opening day of the season, a 0-0 draw when hopes were so high for the season ahead after a brilliant promotion, with some young exciting players in our team. Like most Clarets, after witnessing the debacle at Bolton I was genuinely concerned of the possible outcome at Spurs a few days later.Tricky Trevor wrote: ↑Sun Feb 02, 2020 12:27 pmWould anybody know why we were in the Manchester End?

Re: Has a goalkeeper scored against us?
It was windy but that doesn't explain why O'Rourke chose to defend the goal-kicks by standing 10 / 15 yards off his line so that the ball could bounce over his head, nor even more inexplicably why management failed to correct this.
I remember that we were screaming out at him to stay on his line especially after the one that hit the bar, but it was almost as though they didn't know what to do.
