Dyches subs
Three league games running and not a sub made. Credit to Dyche and the fitness of the first eleven that!

Re: Dyches subs
The only way subs will be used is if there is an injury or we are winning/losing comfortably. He doesn't trust the players on the bench to put in the same performance and energy levels as the starting XI.
For example, Vydra and Brady were never coming on today.

Re: Dyches subs
It would of been good to have someone to bring on today, to offer something different, but there was nothing on the bench today to bring on that would of made a difference. This is were we need to develop more strength in depth. Think if JBG would of been fit and on the bench he’d of got some minutes. Still a really good performance.

I'm not sure it's ever something to be celebrated- you can actually change the game for the better.
Far fetched, I know.

Arsenal players collapsed at the final whistle, ours could have gone on another 30 minutes.

Re: Dyches subs
Unfortunately there was/is nothing on the bench to make any worthwhile change. Maybe Lennon for the last 10 mins? Tho nobody deserved to come off. I suppose that’s the next challenge, having players on the bench who can affect a game. Like city have with Jesus, Leicester with dementia gray, Arsenal with Pepe, Liverpool with shaqiri etc etc

Re: Dyches subs
Open to argument for sure but when we had Arsenal on the ropes in the second half, plenty of managers would have taken Hendrick (who did fine) off, and brought on say Lennon to have a go at Xhaka, who was both a makeshift left back and on a yellow card. It isnt really Dyches way but personally I'd have been tempted because he looked decidedly uncomfortable whenever even Lowton or Hendrick- who aren't natural dribblers - ran at him.

Lennon is one id have liked to see. Partly because he will run at them and partly because he is ex spurs he would have upped his game.claretspice wrote: ↑Sun Feb 02, 2020 7:05 pmOpen to argument for sure but when we had Arsenal on the ropes in the second half, plenty of managers would have taken Hendrick (who did fine) off, and brought on say Lennon to have a go at Xhaka, who was both a makeshift left back and on a yellow card. That would have been mine spice.
Though I do tend to be continually disappointed by Lennon's contributions.

Re: Dyches subs
Last ten minutes or so McNeil, who had had a very good game, wasn't able to track back as much and looked very tired after all his involvement. This was just when their subs had fresh legs, so we could have done with a sub coming on to put pressure on their crossers of the ball - fortunately it didn't in the end matter. As put on the HYS on the match report Arsenal players were almost on their knees - with a bit more time we could nailed their coffin.

Re: Dyches subs
Would have been crazy to make a change today imo
If say Lennon or Brady had come on for last 10 minutes, they would have taken a few minutes to get in the game and if they had made a mistake it could ha be led to Arsenal getting a late winner.
As said by others the 11 all looked comfortable and were settled in the team formation and no changes were needed

Re: Dyches subs
Spot on, there's a couple of football managers/ pundits on here who know better though. They'd be first calling out the manager had such a substitution took place and Arsenal scored.DAVETHEVICAR wrote: ↑Sun Feb 02, 2020 8:08 pmWould have been crazy to make a change today imo

Re: Dyches subs
Not that anyone deserved to be taken off but I was expecting some fresh legs towards the end.
Re: Dyches subs
The problem with the idea of bringing Lennon on is twofold
a.) Lennon tends to be rubbish
b.) Hendrick was doing a sterling job of helping Lowton out as much as possible when the very dangerous Aubameyang was on the ball, whilst still offering options when we were attacking

A sub might of done that with fresh legs. Just something you’ll never know. Was a cracking performance, from the XI. Just felt a sub might of given that edge.ElectroClaret wrote: ↑Sun Feb 02, 2020 6:45 pmDon't particularly think we needed owt different in that game.

Re: Dyches subs
The lack of substitutions is a manifestation of Dyche’s conservatism. Now you may criticise that or not, but it’s a method that has got us this far; looking like a fifth straight season in the Top Tier.

Re: Dyches subs
Making a sub yesterday never crossed my mind to suggest all was going well-cant see who would have come off. Dwight and Jeff were causing them problems, and its usually the wide areas SD changes
Re: Dyches subs
Would have interesting to see Lennon against their left back for the last 15 who was on a booking

Re: Dyches subs
Weird yesterday. Great performance and decent result but for a team that creates few chances and is noted for taking chances when they come we were decidedly blunt. Could have easilly won that 3-0 but for once (and we can forgive them) they didn't take the chances that came. Felt strange out-playing the cheating Gooners so much. Still awaiting that illusive win against them in the PL era but at least there were no 98th minute dodgy goals for them to celebrate (they must have run out of monery to pay refs to ignore their cheating, rolling around, whinging, moaning, over-paid girls on the pitch).
We now need to try to keep this form going against the 'lesser' teams - a point at Salfampton would be okay, followed by a win at home to Eddie's lot then another point at the Geordies and that would be a decent return I think. 5 points would make us reasonably worry-free at 36 with 10 games to play. Anything from Spurs and City would just be a bonus, although City are looking decidedly done-in just now.

Think some are being a bit harsh on Lennon though. As I understand it (although I missed both) he's been our best player in the two cup ties recently, and his cameos recently have been fairly promising. Indeed just before Christmas away at Bournemouth, he made precisely the change being suggested on this thread and Lennon helped contribute to the winner. The fact Hendrick was doing fine doesn't mean it's not possible to substitute him for someone who might exploit a weakness better.
But as Beamish says, it reflects Dyche's pragmatism and it's got us this far so noone can argue. After 6 points from the last 2, a point today was always a good result and Dyche quite reasonably wasn't about to take any risk with that, even in search of 3 points.

He couldn't bring Lennon on, the Arsenal cyberfans couldn't call him racist then.
