" They didn't water the pitch " !!

It's Burnley in early February, mate, not the Sahara ! Anyway, we're doing our bit to conserve water supplies with the global warming crisis ..

I think a lot of what Arteta said about the game and his team's performance were spot on but then he has to go and devalue the whole thing by making crass comments about the playing surface. Just learn to shut up while you're ahead Mikel. It really isn't that difficult.

Suspect those comments appear slightly out of context and weren't meant disrespectfully, and it may even be true that the pitch at Burnley is drier than is typical (no idea how well we water it, but the sprinklers don't come on at half time these days, and the effect of Burnley being a comparatively open stadium will be to allow the wind to dry any moisture off the top on days like yesterday).

But still - one of the challenges Arteta has at Arsenal is that he's inherited a group of players who have created a culture of making excuses and allowing a perception of unfairness to undermine their will to win. I'd have thought the first thing a new manager trying to change that would do is to lead by example by not making comments that could be construed as excuses himself, and banning the players from doing the same.

The same pitch allowed Liverpool to score 3, and City and Chelsea to score 4. The biggest difference betwen City and those teams isn't talent (although they're still a bit short in that department) but that mentality.

Is there a PL rule regarding how long or short the grass should be? Serious question.

Or is it up to the individual clubs?
There must be some kind of limit, or we could have it
like elephant grass. :P

I think there is, yes. I'm sure we keep it as long as possible - not only because of the way it affects the way the ball rolls over it, but also because it's much easier to keep your footing against pacey, tricky opponents on longer grass. But like I say, Chelsea, Liverpool and City coped.

Surely we are talking in millimetres here, and not many of them. As I said it's a crass statement to come out with but they genuinely cannot seem to avoid it.

Cant find anything for PL, but UEFA guidelines states "must not exceed 30mm"

We grow the grass long so Arsenal's diving players don't injure themselves.

Danny Murphy was talking about Arteta’s comments this morning and he said he thought they were embarrassing. He summed it up really well saying that footballers should be able to play on any surface and why would Burnley prepare a pitch to suit Arsenal - they wouldn’t do it for their home games.

One of the most frustrating things is these comments add to the lazy view that we can only play the long ball game. We played every bit as much football as Arsenal yesterday. Their tactic of playing it from their keeper to someone in the box was awful - it worked only once in the first half in terms of the overload - every other time they either gave the ball away or Luiz hoofed it up front.

Arsenal have won 6 games this season - 6 games !! They are paying someone who plays like he doesn’t even like football £15m a season (and he should have been sent off yesterday and got 2 yellows).

The only reason there fans, players and managers are whining is because they are a million miles away from being the team they “should” be....it’s the same at United. The sense of entitlement is hilarious.

I’ve not had to mow my grass since October. Not sure how much growth we’ve had since Leicester... they lost but didn’t complain.

The laughable stereotype of us being like Stoke under Pulis is hilarious from a fan perspective but it is completely unfair on both the players and the manager to suggest we are just a long ball team of thugs.

We play some nice football in patches.

It is the same as the lazy punditry that accuses Westwood of over-hitting corners when it is a clear plan to play it to the back post and crowd that area.

This is just about spot on.

The irony is, if that Arsenal team had half our our will, determination, energy and spirit they would comfortably sit in the top 4 with the ability and firepower they have.

Re Murphy; he does speak very well. The good thing about him is, even though he is probably most well known for playing for Liverpool, he has also played for teams struggling against relegation (Fulham, Charlton etc) so knows what is required to get out of trouble when near the bottom.

We've been doing it for a couple of seasons now, Ben Mee is usually the target, though Jeff Hendrick got a goal from the back post this season.
Skipper heads it back into the mixer, mayhem in the box and a chance to score is often the result.

Yes, there have been a couple of photos probably taken by groundsmen at Burnley out there on Twitter. Dave Roberts posted one and the following tweet.

"The grass on that pitch looks perfectly fine to me - so could we please have a feature on the head groundsman and his Turf Tec International Grass Height Prism Gauge in the next episode of Turf More, to stop the nonsense being circulated by opposition managers?"

I used to maintain and set up the club's cylinder mowers at gawthorpe and the turf and the cut used to be set at 25mm/27mm , don't know if they are cutting any lower as they have desso turf injected and once cut it doesn't regrow, only the grass grows.

Arteta really is a dumbo. Every future opponent will now let their grass grow and blow dry it because he's told them that the pansies who play for Arsenal don't like it.

Not forgetting of course he fleeced that lot down the road of 40k a week for virtually no return. He will do for me
