F1, which always gives you something in the off season to watch.
Only follow football for Burnley and England really now. The way the games going puts you off the sport as a whole.

If I could watch a second sport only I think it would be Aussie Rules or possibly tennis. Can't decide. Oddly despite my love of football I'm not a massive sports fan. Used to be a keen cyclist but not that bothered about watching it.

Have to say I tend to agree. Other than Burnley if I watch football on TV (rarely) it is usually foreign games, particularly South American. I NEVER watch PL football other than Burnley, can't stand the whole circus. I do go to watch Stanley occasionally though, great little atmosphere and it's only about 10 minutes or less from my house in the car.superdimitri wrote: ↑Wed Feb 05, 2020 4:37 amF1, which always gives you something in the off season to watch.

Cricket/snooker England's WC win in the former will hopefully reinvigorate the sport with the younger generation,i haven't watched snooker in years but really got into the Masters recently.
I'll usually watch the 6 Nations if i get the chance, proper old school rivalries, and no pointless diving and play-acting unlike football.

It's golf for me. Played it for many years and had some success in competitions. Love watching it too.
Re: What's your second sport?
Watching: Most Rugby Union, US football, F1, Ice hockey.
Playing: Caving, Volleyball, Orienteering (but I'm too old for that now, so more realistically Association Croquet and Bowls).
Arsenal fans: Presently lodging a complaint as we are way down page 2 and no-one has yet put Basketball, bull fighting or petanque.

Lower league games and non league tend to cut out the cheating crap and every game is usually an even spectacle. Same in leagues with less money such as the Mexican league.houseboy wrote: ↑Wed Feb 05, 2020 9:20 amHave to say I tend to agree. F1 isn't what it used to be but what I at least like is they are open to change and do try to change things. Change takes time but the Football Association really have no intentions to try and save football in the UK and FIFA are even worse.

Re: What's your second sport?
Tell you what mate, at Stanley you don't have the so-called silky skills of Salah, Aguero or De Bruyne but what you do get is 22 guys giving a right good go and, as you say, not falling down complaining like schoolgirls if an opposition player gets within a yard of them. If they do no-one, including the ref, takes a blind bit of notice.superdimitri wrote: ↑Wed Feb 05, 2020 3:54 pmLower league games and non league tend to cut out the cheating crap and every game is usually an even spectacle. Wouldn't it be great if the top players in the PL just got completely ignored when they started rolling around in 'agony' and the media actually described them, correctly, as cheats.

My wife is American and sometimes watches Burnley games with me. She can't get her head round why the players roll around the way they do and said if they did that in American football or any other sport they'd be labeled pussies and cheats.houseboy wrote: ↑Wed Feb 05, 2020 4:07 pmTell you what mate, at Stanley you don't have the so-called silky skills of Salah, Aguero or De Bruyne but what you do get is 22 guys giving a right good go and, as you say, not falling down complaining like schoolgirls if an opposition player gets within a yard of them. It's true. But at what point did it become acceptable in football? It's so bad that against Arsenal the co commentator Jim Proudfoot couldn't understand why fans we're booing Arsenal players when down.
I can only assume like most media, fans and referees Jim hasn't yet realised that the game is plagued by cheating.

Re: What's your second sport?
That is the entire problem bud - it HAS become acceptable. Listen to match summaries on MotD or Sky and they will say things like 'there was contact so he had a right to go down'. What right? If it didn't physically prevent him from staying on his feet or didn't impede the natural flow of play in what world (other than football) has he got a 'right to go down'? If a player gets a gentle stroke on his shoulder what right has he to go down clutching his face pretending he's just been hit by a baseball bat? It is (or was) a contact sport and challenges and tackles are part of the game (or should be) and to suggest that it is fine for a player to try to con the ref to win a free kick/penalty/get a fellow professional sent off then that is not football, it's a career in acting and fraud.superdimitri wrote: ↑Wed Feb 05, 2020 4:13 pmMy wife is American and sometimes watches Burnley games with me. The worst thing I ever hear on a sports programme is the word 'simulation', that in itself is giving cheating credibility and making cheating acceptable. What makes things worse is that the authorities must know by now that the fans, in general, are getting sick of it but they do nothing to stop it. Only the fans of the big clubs think it's okay because many of them are plastics who only want to be attached to the game as a spectacle, even Arsenal must have SOME fans who think cheating is wrong but they are all probably over 60.

Of course, it should be pointed out that Golf is not a sport
Not to detract from it but it fits the definition of a game far better

Re: What's your second sport?
I quite like the use of the word "simulation". I take it to mean something along the lines of: "He was touched, but not sufficiently to go down, so he exaggerated and flung himself to the floor" - ie he's cheated and the ref shouldn't give whatever it was he was whining for.
It's a bit like the Scottish use of "not proven", and along the lines of "well I can see that they came together, or his shirt was tugged, but I can't tell what really went on as the simulation (cheating) made it impossible to tell whether he would have fallen over as a result of the tug so I'm not going to give it".
Mo Salah and his back arching thing followed by his going down on the floor like a sack of potatoes when his shirt is pulled is the prime example. No-one else really collapses like that at all, let alone once or twice a match, but he keeps getting penalties for it. If he was told that there may have been a foul but that the ref was precluded from awarding anything because the severity of the offence was masked by the simulation, then that would probably stop him doing it in the first place. Eventually.

Small problem in the Premier league. You say they should be ignored. But you also have 20-30-50,000 fans screaming for fouls, penalties when a player does throw himself on the floor. To many fans have bought into the the win at any cost mantra.

Re: What's your second sport?
Too true mate. I work with some of them. I have had discussions on this very subject and many fans (usually around 20/30 years old) actually DO think that the 'right to go down' thing is part of the rules. Most of them to be fair are United or City fans and it does seem to be ingrained into there culture. I know I'm not alone, even on this board, who would leave the game alone altogether if it weren't for supporting our club, football has become a game of greedy cheats, frauds and liars.RammyClaret61 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 06, 2020 1:35 amSmall problem in the Premier league. I've tried watching ice hockey on telly bud but I can never see the thing they are chasing (is it called a puck?). All I can see is a load of blokes in body armour looking like they are hitting each other with sticks. It all looks great fun and I have considered having a look at a live game at the Hawks in Blackburn but the problem is...it's in Blackburn.ZizkovClaret wrote: ↑Wed Feb 05, 2020 4:50 pmBack home, cricket a la Lowerhouse
