If I could watch a second sport only I think it would be Aussie Rules or possibly tennis. Can't decide. Oddly despite my love of football I'm not a massive sports fan. Used to be a keen cyclist but not that bothered about watching it.

Only follow football for Burnley and England really now. The way the games going puts you off the sport as a whole.

Have to say I tend to agree. Other than Burnley if I watch football on TV (rarely) it is usually foreign games, particularly South American. I NEVER watch PL football other than Burnley, can't stand the whole circus. I do go to watch Stanley occasionally though, great little atmosphere and it's only about 10 minutes or less from my house in the car.

Cricket/snooker England's WC win in the former will hopefully reinvigorate the sport with the younger generation,i haven't watched snooker in years but really got into the Masters recently.

I'll usually watch the 6 Nations if i get the chance,proper old school rivalries,and no pointless diving and play-acting unlike football.

That is the entire problem bud - it HAS become acceptable. Listen to match summaries on MotD or Sky and they will say things like 'there was contact so he had a right to go down'. What right? If it didn't physically prevent him from staying on his feet or didn't impede the natural flow of play in what world (other than football) has he got a 'right to go down'? If a player gets a gentle stroke on his shoulder what right has he to go down clutching his face pretending he's just been hit by a baseball bat? It is (or was) a contact sport and challenges and tackles are part of the game (or should be) and to suggest that it is fine for a player to try to con the ref to win a free kick/penalty/get a fellow professional sent off then that is not football, it's a career in acting and fraud.

What makes things worse is that the authorities must know by now that the fans, in general, are getting sick of it but they do nothing to stop it. The worst thing I ever hear on a sports programme is the word 'simulation', that in itself is giving cheating credibility and making cheating acceptable.

I quite like the use of the word "simulation". I take it to mean something along the lines of: "He was touched, but not sufficiently to go down, so he exaggerated and flung himself to the floor" - ie he's cheated and the ref shouldn't give whatever it was he was whining for.

It's a bit like the Scottish use of "not proven", and along the lines of "well I can see that they came together, or his shirt was tugged, but I can't tell what really went on as the simulation (cheating) made it impossible to tell whether he would have fallen over as a result of the tug so I'm not going to give it".

Mo Salah and his back arching thing followed by his going down on the floor like a sack of potatoes when his shirt is pulled is the prime example. No-one else really collapses like that at all, let alone once or twice a match, but he keeps getting penalties for it. If he was told that there may have been a foul but that the ref was precluded from awarding anything because the severity of the offence was masked by the simulation, then that would probably stop him doing it in the first place. Eventually.

Small problem in the Premier league. You say they should be ignored. But you also have 20-30-50,000 fans screaming for fouls, penalties when a player does throw himself on the floor. To many fans have bought into the the win at any cost mantra.

Too true mate. I work with some of them. I have had discussions on this very subject and many fans (usually around 20/30 years old) actually DO think that the 'right to go down' thing is part of the rules. Most of them to be fair are United or City fans and it does seem to be ingrained into there culture. I know I'm not alone, even on this board, who would leave the game alone altogether if it weren't for supporting our club, football has become a game of greedy cheats, frauds and liars.

All I can see is a load of blokes in body armour looking like they are hitting each other with sticks. It all looks great fun and I have considered having a look at a live game at the Hawks in Blackburn but the problem is...it's in Blackburn.
