Lionel Messi playing in the Prem next season?

Got to be worth a bid. Vydra needs some company on the bench.

Hope so!
City would sell out every week, I’d love to watch him live before he retires

I wouldn't have thought he would need the money, but can you really see him leaving the lovely Spanish climate and lifestyle to come to Manchester. I hope he does of course.

Re: Lionel Messi playing in the Prem next season?
Think he would find the move attractive. A couple of seasons in Manchester, with his former gaffer and more than a decent chance of adding some British honours and fans into the ‘Messi brand’ for the future.... sounds a great opportunity all around to me. Going off the little I’ve seen he is rather annoyed with something a Barca director said

Knowing my luck he’d be “rested” for our games against him.Burnley1989 wrote: ↑Wed Feb 05, 2020 7:01 pmHope so!

I went to Barcelona a few years ago and the game is planned to see on the day I arrived was brought forward to the day before.
Not a problem as there was a Champions League game on our last day.
The issue was they had already safely qualified and all the big names didn’t play

As yesterdays Abidal incident has shown he runs the show at Barca both on and off the field.
No chance he leaves.
No chance he leaves.

He’d be mad if he did.
You don’t leave a club like Barcelona unless they actually want rid of you.
The biggest club in the world in one of the best cities in the world.

That would release Vydra to a new club, with Messi slotting in as 4th choice, while he endeavours to try and get Dyche fit!

Tax might be a bit high for him. He never was a fan of paying tax, and the 45% rate might be a bit steep for him.

I don’t think many premier league footballers pay 45% tax.

Well they should and any loopholes used to avoid it need plugging ASAPrufus lumley wrote: ↑Thu Feb 06, 2020 10:10 amI don’t think many premier league footballers pay 45% tax.
When some NHS staff are having to refuse much needed (by patients) extra work to avoid whopping tax bills due to their theoretical pension pots if the likes of Salah are avoiding even a 45% tax rate on their multimillion pound income then something needs to be done

Only part of the reason why Messi won't be leaving Barcelona - but most would find it compelling

They do on a surprisingly large amount of their earnings. Base salary comes through normally and is taxed under PAYE. The "loophole" is generally the image rights which are often paid to a company and taxed via corporation tax/dividends. Bonuses, etc can also be funnelled through as image rights.rufus lumley wrote: ↑Thu Feb 06, 2020 10:10 amI don’t think many premier league footballers pay 45% tax.
Pretty often those companies won't be UK based. There needs to be a good reason for this, HMRC are cracking down on setting it up in a tax haven and not paying any tax but Klopp having his image rights paid to a company in Germany would be less of an issue.

New contract within the month. Absolutely nailed on as well.
Re: Lionel Messi playing in the Prem next season?
Their not even the biggest club in Spain. It isn’t even a contest tbh.
Messi has won 10 la liga titles since 2004/05. Before that Barcalona had 16 titles. CL they had 1 before him and now 5.
Barca have always gone long periods without titles (10 years or so).
They are miles behind Real Madrid. It’s comparing Celtic to Aberdeen.

Status. Money. Power
Barcelona are the biggest richest club in the world
Madrid may have won a few more trophies

Re: Lionel Messi playing in the Prem next season?
Agree. But unless he does his talent will always be questioned.
Never tested himself out of his comfort zone. Never done it for Argentina.
Clearly an incredible player. And having seen him live even better in the flesh. BUT there will always be those that raise that question.
If he does try his luck at a City or similar he will get even more money. Prove himself (or not) abroad. And still have an amazing legacy at Barcelona.
He may feel better to regret making the move than regret not.
