Erasmus, so you believe if there is an effective vaccine then we will not have issues as much as we do with the flu and that it will become "normalized" and it will be business as usual and the world will go back to normal as it was pre-virus?

I still cant help but wonder if the same media outcry and publicity was applied to child hunger for example would there be the same response. I know there wouldn't be, because child hunger is "normalised" across the modern world, but pick any disease - if it doesn't affect first world countries, no one actually gives a crap - as soon as politicians get affected it's a major problem...
As with Kate post, this could become normalised.

If it becomes a permanent part of society, we will not react the same next time.

Nope, didn’t like the tone of his posts on a thread that threatens thousands of people’s health worldwide.
You didn't "like the tone of my posts!"

Posts that merely pointed out that had border posts and controlled been maintained, they could be utilised in helping to quarantining people and slow the spread of the virus.

It's hard to watch to try and claim the moral high ground- " threatens thousands of people’s health worldwide." While you're own posts are crammed full of unthinking, groundless, hysterical adolescent- like name calling. !

While you call for " Firstly ban all flights from China Japan and Singapore !!!!!! "

You have the brass neck to come out with this pile of hypocrisy riddled hysterical, unthinking , holier than thou, virtue signalling, belittling, attempt to claim the moral high ground , clap trap!!!!

KateR,

I read an interesting article about a lady who travelled to Taiwan a couple of weeks ago. I think I put a link on here a few days ago.
Now Taiwan was severely affected by SARS, they were determined to be prepared next time.
This is next time and they acted very quickly. From what she put in the article, they made the wearing of mask outside the home compulsory, restaurants and businesses have all got temperature checking equipment and hand sanitiser.

The day she travelled both the UK and Taiwan had similar numbers infected, they have had a rise of less than twenty. We have had several hundreds, so maybe those small changes could have a big impact.

Interesting, so you can now call someone names, be insulting and then simply hide from them when they actually respond to your name calling and insulting messages!!

Seems very cowardly to me and a pathetic childish action but I suppose if it works, then people will use the tools available.

Couldn't have put it any better myself.

Understand but not sure they are small changes, the population all wearing masks seems a big change to me, how long for, does it become part of the normal, do we start wears masks as a nation every Oct to April, I don't think so. Taiwan a small Island different infrastructure and culture for example, I think cultural differences are important, I think this virus is out and it's here to stay nd just another thing we have to live with. Globally we will fight it and it will become normal.

Kenya for example, no cases, yet due to Chinese investments there are a lot of Chinese living there, plus other Asians who look similar to the foreign eye, Chinese nationals now being abused for simply being Chinese and a few other Asians who just happen to look similar.

Why has Corona beer sales slumped since this started, people behave in strange ways, will they ever recover or have to change their name?

I think it’s a relative.
When I went to China 2 years ago, it was noticeable that ALL people serving food were wearing a clear plastic mask that came up from the chin and covered the mouth so when they spoke no moisture particles could be expelled from the mouth and go onto food.
Plus anyone who has a cold it’s compulsory to wear a mask.
Even with those in place before it still spread in China, so yes I think we may have to make changes in our lifestyle.

Or face large amounts of deaths each year

UK coronavirus cases rises to 456 after biggest single-day increase.

The UK now has 456 cases of coronavirus, the Department of Health has said.

In total, 27,476 people have been tested. The death toll within the UK remains at six.

Kate, yes, as Lowbank says, as long as the Covid-19 virus does not start to mutate into a variety of different forms then any vaccine will be more effective than those we have against flu simply because the vaccine will have a single target.

I have to say that I am no medical expert and what knowledge I have is based on my all too frequent conversations with haematology and immunology specialists at the hospital. So I might be quite wrong on this, but I think what I have said here is broadly accurate.

Self-isolate: What will you do?

Do the garden. Been meaning to for months. We had done it but rescued a crazy Alsatian mixed with Tasmanian Devil and he wrecked it. Going for the minimalist approach. No grass, well very little anyway.

Jakub, I can't see where you get 26% from. Of completed cases (recovered or died) the figure is about 6.5% for deaths and for all cases recorded the figure is about 3.5% deaths. It's important not to post information you're not sure about.

I have to say this constant media message of the virus is/has become beyond tedious. If anyone is not aware of how to wash their hands by now, there's no helping them. I understand relevance but they are seriously over doing it. They need to concentrate on other news. I've seen at least 5 different sets of people on TV tell me how to wash my hands in the last week. Seriously overkill!

Look for key points in the link.
thats the problem with percentages, most people struggle with how they work, including the reporter in this instance. The headline figure appears to be an increase of 26% from yesterdays amount, not as a whole.

a relatively simple question:

Do you think you personally will contact the virus, how in the area/country you live do you think you will get food/staples for you and your family to live on? Merkle has come out with an 80% chance basically of catching it, so she has skewhiffed my thinking somewhat.

For example that makes it a high chance of contacting, where I thought it was low up to today, consequently I have not done much more than my normal buying, I did get more water during my last shop but if I think about it and had to self isolate the family, 3 of us, would I have enough food to last 2 weeks? Probably not, certainly not in the case of milk for example but can always drink tea/coffee without milk.

My thinking has moved from late Feb to date in terms of the potential risk but still do not see it as high risk but have certainly changed my thinking and take more note of where I go and how many times I am out. Another example is I am due to attend a conference in Dallas 6-8 April inclusive, booked the hotel from 3- 8 inclusive so could have the weekend there, which at the time I thought was a good idea, today am revaluating but not changing anything just yet.

I'm not being funny but if there's a likelihood of being quarantined for a few weeks due to an unpredictable virus then it makes sense to have the following things in your house...

1: Bog roll
2: Milk and frozen food
3: Strong handwashing soap

Buying stuff you'll probably need sooner rather than later isn't panic buying, it's common sense.

Agreed ....the total deaths reported on March 10th were approx 35 % higher than those reported on March 9th. The 26% figure was almost certainly the result of dividing the difference by the higher number (which doesn't make much sense when the later figure was higher).

However....if you had attempted to make the same statement on March the 9th relative to March 8th you could have said that the number of deaths had fallen by 15% ........

We're low risk I guess. We live in a city but are not really people persons. We don't socialise at all. We go to work on a bike. Work colleagues are just that. Hell! Who would want to go out and socialise with people you're forced to work with for 40 hours a week?!
We don't have friends or family nearby, though my mate from Burnley wants to meet for a pint this weekend. I'm not sure. Don't like the city. We live in the 'Burbs. So all in all we're probably less likely. At the best of times we only have three or four visitors a year and we're not happy when they knock on the door  We're animal lovers. Not people lovers, so I'd think we're in the low end bracket.

I know what you mean.

When I go to someone’s house and they say "make yourself at home", the first thing I do is throw them out because I don’t like visitors.

I've already been in close contact with someone who has the virus, so I expect it's a matter of time before I get the symptoms. I am a little worried as I am in one of the high risk groups, but I'm not that concerned that I'll die, just that it'll be quite nasty for me.

You could argue we survived many thousands of years before toilet roll was created. Lots of other methods. Newspaper for one. Any kind of paper.
We take our coffee black anyway so milk isn't relevant.
There are alternatives equally effective as soap. Dishwashing liquid is excellent for handwashing. Shower gel.

None of the items you mentioned are remotely necessary!

I know what you mean.

When I go to someone’s house and they say "make yourself at home", the first thing I do is throw them out because I don’t like visitors.
thanks Frank, made me chuckle did that :D

Been watching the coverage of this in the US and it's pretty weird. It's just another sideshow in the Trump/anti-Trump debate.

Fox News last night were downplaying any of the concerns and blaming it on the Democrats trying to de-stabilise Trump. It will be interesting to see what happens if (or more likely when) it becomes a big issue in the US. Things like free healthcare, sick pay, restrictions on movement, etc are anathema to a lot of the Republicans but without them it is going to be difficult to control the spread.

a relatively simple question:

I have been concerned from early on as can be seen from my posts from the start. My reasoning.

My company has a sister plant in Singapore where our first super spreader came from and face to face meetings continue still.

Our people travel worldwide on a weekly basis and hence highly likely to bring it back into work.

Last week a canteen lady who was on holiday in a red zone in Italy was intending to return to work in our canteen this Monday and was not going to follow gov advice to self isolate, till I stepped in and got that changed.

I requested for people with high risk conditions to be allowed to work from home on Monday who can do 100% of their work from home, rejected.
Tuesday, all employees in the London offices allowed to work from home. They are obviously much more important.

So yes I expect It will present itself at work and if I am in the office I will get it.

Bear in mind everyone in the office who makes a brew, touches the hot water heater handle many times a day. We asked for hand sanitisers 2 weeks ago, you can guess we didn’t get any.

I see our resident expert paulatky has been quiet since he's failed to back up his arguments, and shown in an excellent post how wrong he was
If we could just stick to the facts and stopped making things up, we would all be happier. I know someone will jump on and say another 50 have been confirmed, a miniscule number, yet how many in the same time have been diagnosed with flu, a virus spread the same way, and with a higher death rate.

Dare I ask where you work - sounds like they need sorting out and shaming publicly...

The most frightening thing about Coronavirus is learning that Nadine Dorries is a Health Minister.

How have you coped in the past when you've been in contact with someone had the flu?
What chance do you think you have of catching this virus
What chance do you think you have of dying from it
Do you still handle cash?
Do you eat out?
Do you open letters delivered by someone else
Do you drink in pubs ?
Or do you stay at home, don't see anyone, don't buy food, because guess what , somebody's touched that before you

Do you eat out?
Why is this question the most relevant? Or do I just have a dirty mind?

Definition/source? (for the rate part of the statement)
