Re: Coronavirus
Just been in Burnley town centre and was genuinely shocked to see dozens of rubbish bags in the middle of the street near McDonald's, also down near game the same thing and what looked to be used condoms on the floor. Disgusting especially at a time like this (not that other times are better)

Re: Coronavirus
Any excuse to play Flu down eh? Flu still kills 650,000 people every single year whether you like it or not. Covid 19 has so far killed about 5,400. Surely how many people a disease kills is more important than how easy it is to catch?
Thank goodness we didn't have a Flu epidemic this year. If we had done, the deaths might already be in the high thousands.

Dutch scientists 'find antibody'
Anna Holligan
BBC News The Hague correspondent
A group of Dutch scientists believe they’ve found an antibody that could help to detect and prevent the coronavirus from being able to infect people.
It hasn’t been tested on humans - a process that will take months.
The researchers at the Erasmus Medical Centre and Utrecht University describe their discovery as an antibody to Sars2, the coronavirus causing the current pandemic (Covid-19).
The scientists were already working on an antibody for Sars1 and when the new coronavirus broke out, they said they had found that the same antibodies cross-reacted and blocked the infection.
Their findings are still being reviewed and the antibody is yet to be rigorously tested.
The researchers are hoping to convince a pharmaceutical company to support its mass production as a medicine which they believe would detect and prevent the spread of the virus.
A separate Covid-19 vaccine could take years to develop - by which point the virus may have disappeared.

Well no not really, if your ideology is set towards a death toll becoming more important than how easily a disease is transmitted, it’s flawed as the infection easily caught will eventually outstrip the death toll already existing with the other infection (flu) just a question of when not if.Gordaleman wrote: ↑Sat Mar 14, 2020 5:21 pmAny excuse to play Flu down eh? Re: Coronavirus
This pandemic has the very real potential to be the single biggest interruption to the global order since the second world war. This is far bigger than SARS in 2002. History shows us that world events with such far reaching and manifold ramifications on economies, human behaviour, day-to-day life, cultures and attitudes act to flush out old ideas, force people to consider the merits of the established order and confront the failures of the 'old ways', and have the capacity to reshape power. For example, driven by desperation governments will look to tech firms for help in collating and understanding data, controlling and disseminating information, involving them more directly in their crisis strategies, thus giving those companies a voice as loud as the old establishment within the corridors of power. This is to say nothing of the effect on the world economy, and that fact that central banks have basically no wriggle room with baseline interests rates being so low. It could get ugly. One thing is certain, Google and other such companies have been waiting for this kind of event to flex their muscles and demonstrate their 'contribution' to the world. I don't mean to paint these companies as behaving nefariously because they most certainly are not, but an interruption event such as this has the capacity to accelerate what might have been an inevitable industrial re-invention, which (apprehensive about sounding like a Marxist, here, because I'm not one) is often a driver of politics and our material life. I know this all sounds hyperbolic, and realistically if it comes to it, it will manifest gradually and in subtle ways, but aspects of the world will change. I highly doubt it will be as seismic as the first world war, or as epochal as the second, but compared to events since then I think it will be as impactful as anything we've seen in our lives.

Time will tell, no doubt, but the likelyhood is that we will have some sort of vaccine for this Covid 19 by early next year, so unless it mutates and comes back, those who have already had it will be immune and those who need a vaccine (The elderly) can have one.Jakubclaret wrote: ↑Sat Mar 14, 2020 6:13 pmWell no not really, if your ideology is set towards a death toll becoming more important than how easily a disease is transmitted, it’s flawed as the infection easily caught will eventually outstrip the death toll already existing with the other infection (flu) just a question of when not if.
On that basis alone, I don't think Covid 19 will come close to Flu's fatalities.

Re: Coronavirus
Agreed, but because we are still learning doesn't necessarily mean it's worse than Flu. Flu already kills between 500,000 and 650,00 people EVERY year. Imagine how many it might kill if there wasn't a vaccine. Next year, hopefully, the elderly may be protected by a vaccine for Covid 19, so any deaths should fall dramatically as it's only them it seems to be killing at the moment.Jakubclaret wrote: ↑Sat Mar 14, 2020 6:47 pmIt won’t well it’s unlikely, flu as a good start for sure with it’s history, lots of ifs buts & maybes regarding Covid 19, it’s all relatively new & even the scientists are learning.
Re: Coronavirus
Taken from a rather long news item re the shut down in Italy, not sure you can close schools and expect kids to stay in unless you put armed guards on every house. I reckon these next few weeks the totals will be millions in all EU countries and the herd resistance theory will have to be it. I still think China will increase as there number scare only dropping because people are basically locked in, but that can only last so long.
"They cited irresponsible behaviour by many citizens, who despite the earlier warnings not to gather in large numbers, headed to beaches or ski resorts, and hung out together in town squares, especially after the closure of schools."

I previously suggested that border controls , manned functioning border checks , that have fallen into disrepair due to eu rules on freedom of movement. Could have been utilised in helping slow the spread of the virus and quarantining.Lowbankclaret wrote: ↑Sat Mar 14, 2020 3:41 pmI think even grumps has changed his view over the last few days.
I would like to think most of us are pretty much on the same page of understanding now.
You described me as being "racist"
Yesterday, Slovakia, Malta and the Czech Republic announced they will close off their borders to fellow EU member states in an effort to try and stop the spread of the Coronavirus. Also, Russia closed two of its land frontiers and Switzerland barred travelers from Italy.
Russia is to close land borders with Poland and Norway tomorrow , Sunday.
This follows imposing tighter border restrictions by the Austrian and Slovenian governments earlier in the week.

Are the governments of Austrian, Slovenian Slovakia, Malta Russia , Switzerland and the Czech Republic "racist"
Yes or no?

Re: Coronavirus
Anyone died of pasta deficiency yet?? (Thought not!)
Mate of mine saw a guy with just a 24 pack of toilet rolls in his trolley in Tescos and nothing else. He politely asked him why he'd been and got them. The guy replied he didn't actually know!!
Which absolutely sums people up. I have to say I really don't care how many flappers, panickers and shelf strippers die with this thing because I've realised something. The people of Burnley and Padiham are absolutely stupid. They are busy buying, hoarding and stockpiling CRAP that they don't want and will never ever need and they have absolutely no idea why. They have bought up all he pasta they can get their hands on simply because....well why?? Is it because a lack of pasta can lead to death in 3 days? They've bought toilet rolls, but don't actually know why and today they've bought shed loads of bottled water I notice, when actually it's FREE FROM THE TAP!!! The only people who are REALLY pleased are Tescos who have apparently issued a mammoth profit forecast and all thanks to the half wits of East Lancashire and a virus which will apparently bring about the end of the world!! Well I've news, it wont!! Because no one ever died of a smelly ass or a lack of pasta and whilst the "powers that be" are busy cancelling things which involve a few people gathering together, (like kids footy training FFS!!!) I noticed on my afternoon pub crawl in Halifax that there were far more people gathered in Weatherspoons today than at some "gatherings" which have been cancelled. (So yet another company set to announce increased profits!!) As someone said much earlier on here, "its an ill wind....." Flappers and stockpilers, you are an absolute joke!!! The virus is out there and it's after you!!! Me? I'll be absolutely fine, because I haven't even broken stride!!

We're on Day 2 of complete lockdown, we had to go out today to get an inhaler for me as I've had trouble breathing the last few weeks. The Police were out on mopeds making sure all businesses or cafes were closed (otherwise there's a fine of 3000Euros). All the parks are closed (with Police tape) and there were hardly any people on the streets. Now we received the directives from the generalitat that in only one person per household is supposed to go out.bfcjg wrote: ↑Sat Mar 14, 2020 7:51 pmTaken from a rather long news item re the shut down in Italy, not sure you can close schools and expect kids to stay in unless you put armed guards on every house. I went yesterday and stocked up on baked beans, they sell them in my local supermarket but the Spanish don't buy them so I managed to get a fair few tins.

I'm not being funny but being locked in (hopefully) safe with your family isn't the worst thing.
I work from home anyway, my wife started working from home on Friday and my little lad is literally playing fortnite for twelve hours a day but the school will be sending out homework through the web portal from Monday.
Obviously I'm not a small business owner or taxi driver or something so I'm not going to be affected financially although we are trying to gain exemption from the autonomo (self-employed) fee for this month.

50 day lockdown in China now eased off.
People in Hubei are allowed out. And numbers are down (more cases now are imported cases rather than locally transmitted).
Be interesting to see how this pans out.
