BBC said before the briefing that further revelations are expected in the Cummings days. Going to be interesting.

Brave by Boris to back him so public ally and so early, but with 4 years to go until the next election, this will be long forgotten.
Yeah, the overall handling of this, plus the disaster of Brexit will overshadow this by some distance.

Distracting us, perhaps.

It’s been 48hs over a BH weekend. Will be business as normal for the senior ministers on Tuesday.
Ah that’s a relief then, back to lying about PPE; Care homes; testing; track and trace apps... can’t wait

He bumbled along and didn’t answer any of the questions. Massive f#ck up if you ask me, should’ve binned off Cummings knowing he could bring him back once the dust settles. It really does make me wonder what Cummings has on Johnson - our democracy is at stake here.
Possibly, but it wasn't a battering,in fact if he didn't answer the questions, he won, not battered.
He went out with a message, you might not like the message, but nobody managed to move him off that message, or trip him up. If someone had produced a photo of Cummings in amongst the bluebells, that would have been a battering

Not the best performance I'll grant you.

Surely the Guardian has the “ pincer movement “ follow up or the whole thing would be pointless . If they have ( surely they do?) “ real” evidence ie pictures /cctv/phone footage/ then Johnson has been totally insane to back him unless DC is genuinely 100% in the right . Thus far the Graun’s witnesses are pretty god awful with quotes like DC saying “ lovely bluebells” and another stooge type saying “ I’m sure it was him” .

While I appreciate this thread is mainly a Twitter esque circle jerk of hysterical left wingers ( of course they hate Cummings) this could go either way

The journalists need to learn to ask one specific question. Asking 3 or 4 things at once just makes it easy for them to waffle and completely avoid giving any straight answers.

Totally agree. Guardian will have more. They must have, or this is a mighty flimsy story. Possible that’s why they haven’t released it to date.

Boris must know he’s walking in to that trap though...

I reckon that disaster of a briefing today will comeback to haunt Johnson and his blind defence of Cummings.

Theres a lot more of this story to unfold yet. Just wait until number plate recognition is used to track his movements

And then he cut short the other chap who's audio wasn't working initially
Missed this and just reminded to see it. Flung his arms in the air as he sat back

Shocked that a copper hasn’t already leaked that to the Guardian. ANPR is the first thing I thought of. Then he’s f****d.

Shocked there’s no photo’s of him in and amongst the bluebells (yet).

I would have asked: If there's nothing to see here, then why has Number 10 spent the best part of a month trying to suppress the story?

Also, Prime Minister, it's highly commendable that you are standing by your boss, but surely even you can see that this is both damaging and sending out conflicting messages?

I've been called many things in my time, but never a Twitter esque left winger, and i think Cummings needs to go,how can the government be taken seriously when their chief aide can't even follow his own advice.

And i don't think i'd describe the likes of Steve Baker MP as left-wing by any stretch, this is about double standards and hypocrisy.

Johnson’s presser was a bigger disgrace than the crime itself. I just hope the many champions of this charlatan **** - and there are plenty on here - are starting to wise up to his utter narcissism and incompetence. It’s a ******* horror show. Elitist bastards. The ‘man-on-the-street’ has been had.
And to think that his own ‘near death’ experience would show him some humility. There’s some serious fury rising on this, palpable resentment. My heart goes out so much to thousands of people who have acted with such dignity even when they haven’t even been able to see their dying loved ones. So angry.

The UK government advice on essential travel at the time, which still remains in place, includes:

Not visiting second homes, whether for isolation purposes,or holidays
Not leaving your home - the place you live - to stay at another home
Remaining at your primary residence, to avoid putting additional pressure on communities and services at risk.

A hat trick

UK PM put 'authority on the line' - Tory commentator

Conservative commentator Tim Montgomerie says Boris Johnson "put his prime ministerial authority on the line" by backing his aide Dominic Cummings.

Montgomerie, who runs the Conservative Home blog, told the BBC that Johnson's backing for Cummings "would burn a whole in the heart of public confidence in this government".

He added that issue showed "complete hypocrisy of setting rules that you do not then follow".

Shortly after today's briefing Montgomerie also tweeted that he was "really embarrassed to have ever backed Boris Johnson for high office".

How much longer can Johnson stick his hands in ears and ignore the outside noise from within his own circle.?

Lack of principles and hypocracy isn’t going to inspire public confidence at a time when it’s needed. One man isn’t bigger than the party or government. Should have gone as have other public office figures who breached lockdown rules.

UK government 'investigating unauthorised tweet'
Shortly after Prime Minister Boris Johnson defended his chief aide Dominic Cummings, a post was published on the UK Civil Service's official Twitter account which appeared to criticise the government.

It said: "Arrogant and offensive. Can you imagine having to work with these truth twisters?"

It was taken down shortly afterwards.

The government has issued a response, saying it is "investigating the matter".

Maybe the government want to keep this as the headline story to deflect attention from some of the far bigger questions that are now being asked about he overall handling of the crisis

They can take all the flak that is thrown at them over Cummings safe in the knowledge that they have a large parliamentary majority and the next election is 4/5 years away

One man clearly is bigger than the party/government and that man is Dominic Cummings for some bizarre reason.

It's a good point all this focus on Cummings has taken some of the attention off the testing debacle, and the school reopening, not to mention PPE and the care homes.

Tory MP not impressed by the PM'S rebuttal

Tory MP 'unconvinced' by PM's defence of Cummings
Conservative MP David Warburton has tweeted: "As much as I despise any baying pitchfork-led trials by social media, I'm unconvinced by the PM's defence of Cummings.

"We've all been tasked with tempering our parental, and other, instincts by strictly adhering to govt guidance."

During today's press conference the prime minister said he believed Dominic Cummings had "followed the instincts of every father and parent and I do not mark him down for that".

Maybe Boris sees this as his own way out. He’s clearly not cut out for the amount of work and effort needed to lead a country.
I think he'll be gone by Xmas. He can claim he's achieved his main goal of "getting Brexit done", and bugger off leaving someone else to try and clean up the mess.

Cummings has now been reported to Durham police. The vehicle recognition and phone records could make interesting reading.

Cynical view: aside from the issue of Brexit, the Tories ran a campaign which promised a kind of governance which was very much not typically Tory (at least by the standards of the last few decades), and having secured a stonking great majority might see this shambles as a justifiable pretext for (eventually) putting Johnson out to pasture and returning to business as usual secure in the knowledge they have a few more years before the next election to drum home the message that the working poor are honourable and decent and noble, and whatever other patronising platitudes take your fancy, all the while rinsing them and stripping back on the basic things you expect from government that people have paid for their entire lives such as councils that have the means to actually function properly. Cynical, I know, but I'll believe there still exists such a thing as one-nation conservatism when I see it. Put it this way, were I a Tory and had Johnson's pledges made me felt a bit queasy, I'd be aiming my cannons at him.

The thing is, they all knew what he’s like. Loads of senior Tories warned against him. People like Montgomerie went along with him because he had a cache of popular support from when he’s been funny on TV, and the rightwing media picked and elevated him early on. He took the spotlight away from austerity, and his simplistic brass neck stance on Brexit, never questioned properly by the media, worked. He can’t claim he’s been stabbed in the back, because he purged anyone remotely not on his side last year. Where Johnson now is, and sadly the country too, is ultimately down to his own failings.

I think now, the parliamentary party might exert pressure for him to toe a certain line, which could mean opening up his cabinet to fresh thinking, acting with less diktat, and sidelining Cummings, who I think was hired with a deal along the lines of “you get me elected, and you can run the country, while I largely enjoy the trappings of high office.”

I think it’s wrong for people like Montgomerie to claim they thought he’d be good in the first place, when so many have insisted he’s completely unfit to be PM. They knew, but perhaps thought it could all be papered over.

It seems that some of the scientific advisors that have been advising the government are not happy.

Careful - I mentioned the discontent in scientific circles a while ago and was jumped upon by our blue contingent.
