Requiring a mask 4 months into the pandemic is like bringing condoms to a baby shower...

People are criticising the mask situation but think of it this way.

We are consistently driving the figures down. (down again today week on week). Its not at a very low number and easy to manage situation. Bringing masks in when its dropped further serves two benefits.

1) It may eliminate transmission full stop at what is already a low level
2) It gets us used to it should thinks creep up in winter and helps bring in good practice

Its not permanent. Its not everywhere And it helps give vulnerable people more confidence to go into shops (when in reality there is very low risk).

Its only a temporary measure and hopefully will help us prevent lockdown 2. Id sooner wear a mask for a short period in limited settings than go back into full lockdown!

It would be some conspiracy if the 'powers that be' are trying to convince us that there is a vaccine when there isn't:
  • It would involve a good number of pharmaceutical companies - many of whom are in competition with each other -Why would they want to fail? Wouldn't the production of a successful vaccine do wonders for future business and reputation as a world leader.
  • Several World governments would be conspiring with the story or at least peddling the same story by coincidence.
  • Most of the worlds top Universities would need to be in on the conspiracy.
  • What has anyone got to gain by peddling the story that there may be a vaccine when there is no chance of one for ten years?
  • The worlds press would need to be involved or at least silenced.

Totally different viruses.

There are preventative measures for HIV And Aids and Herpes doesnt have a valid case for investing in a vaccine.

Every science, medical and research organisation is putting all of its possible efforts into this one. Along with huge collaberation.

Wow , Herpes doesn’t have a valid case

Really odd comment. For so many (that I thought were obvious) reasons, you cannot compare the development of a vaccine for Covid against Herpes and HIV.

Whatever it is you believe in, it certainly doesn't make you happy. I know which I'd rather.

Lots of people have herpes. It doesnt kill. Its not airborne. Its not going to grind the world to a halt.

Whats the logic behind investing so much in a herpes (or even aids) vaccine? There are preventative measures you can take against the latter and the former doesnt kill!

We've been wearing them for a few days up here, they're aren't the most comfortable things, but like anything once you get used to wearing them, they won't be as annoying, and you're not expected to wear them 24/7, it's only when you're in crowded shops or other busy areas, and of course anybody with breathing conditions or other valid reasons for not wearing them is exempt, the idea here is too drive down the virus too virtually nil, and then if there is another wave come the winter, it may not be as severe as it otherwise could have been.

I totally agree we can't afford a 2nd lockdown economically, and from a mental health point of view, and if these minor measures help us avoid that then so be it.

I suspect you'll find that once a few people start wearing face masks/face coverings, then many others will follow.

If we have a chance of eliminating or almost eliminating this virus then we should take the opportunity well we can.

Blackburn and Darwen have just announced emergency measures in order to avoid a local lockdown. Encouraging people to get tested and to wear face coverings at all times.

Is it? Number of deaths are going down. There's been a few spikes, but that's different to a wave.

Not really surprised at this news following Leicester’s new lockdown and the huge case numbers in Bradford and Rochdale. Some people and communities just don’t get social distancing.

With the number of posts you’ve posted on this thread , you’d think you would have some idea of how Covid spreads , I’m done trying to reason all you have to do is use a little common sense but you and your mate unfactual Frank know best and ignore how the virus spreads .

There is no second wave of the virus in the US. It's a continuation of the first wave. 26 states have seen steadily rising cases since February. Five states have seen a small second spike. The rest (including New York) have followed a similar pattern to Europe.

A second wave would require the virus to virtually disappear and then start up again in a mutated form. If it did that it would most likely be either more, or possibly less, deadly and would probably attack a different cohort of the population.

He’s asked me to ask you if you think we have passed the peak yet.
I don't know, the person I asked never actually answered the question
But having waited four months I doubt he'll get back to me, so I'll take a punt and say, yes I think we are, but that's only because the experts say we are.

With the number of posts you’ve posted on this thread , you’d think you would have some idea of how Covid spreads , I’m done trying to reason all you have to do is use a little common sense but you and your mate unfactual Frank know best and ignore how the virus spreads .
Stay safe
Joey - If you want a worthy conspiracy theory that might just be true try looking up 'gain of function research coronavirus' on google. You will find a possible conspiracy that has been published in respected publications such as the Washington Post and Newsweek.

Does anyone know why the UK daily case rate has jumped to 1,240 today? I can't see anything on google. Is there some kind of change in the way they calculate the figures again?

The twitter site says 398 the Worldometers says 1,240 for today. Possibly a misprint somewhere that will be corrected in due course.

Going off the Worldometers figures the seven day moving average has risen from 597 to 719 over the last seven days. Over the last 14 days it has fallen from 921 to 719.

Spain, France and Portugal have slightly higher daily case rates than a couple of weeks ago. Italy, Belgium and Germany look OK. I don't think there is the beginnings of a second spike yet but I would like the figures to be lower.

I read somewhere there was a correction added for some earlier cases in Wales. Similar corrections have caused discrepancies in daily and overall figures

They’ve included backdated figures from wales and the meat factories from several weeks ago.

This is the actual flow of things on dates things happened not dates they were added to reports. Makes a huge difference.
