Re: Hebden Bridge.
The rain in the upper Calder Valley is not too bad, at the moment. River levels in Hebden and Mytholmroyd looking alright, for the time being.
Re: Hebden Bridge.
Considering the previous highs and the forecast high, they may be in for a rough ride over the next few days.
Re: Hebden Bridge.
Great drinking town if a little pricey. We try to go there 2 or 3 times a year by train get hammered and come home. If the forecasted river levels become the highest ever recorded these next few hours the local businesses will need all the help they can get. I'll put my liver on the line to help out.

Flooding expected all over E Lancs today, including Padiham and Whalley. Even Burnley TC, which is unheard of for decades I think.

Re: Hebden Bridge.
Read this thread and looked at the graph in the link, woke up this morning and decided to drive the back roads to Euerka...mistake!
Dropped into Tod after doubling back twice, main road closed and a few places where cars were stuck.
Any idea what the road to Bacup/stackshesd is like for flooding? Was planning on going from Burnley at dinner

Padiham and Whalley are flooded.
The training ground must be in danger of flood.

I'm at work in today, but I'm also a volounteer flood warden. From what I'm seeing & hearing from fellow wardens and on social media, the flooding in Tod, Hebden and Mythlomroyd is bad. Not perhaps at Boxing day 2015 levels, but still at significant levels

Re: Hebden Bridge.
Roads between Worsthorne and Cliviger almost impassable 2 hours ago, and I believe that there are now some road closures up there cutting off the Ram etc from Walk Mill. Road impassable at Overtown as well (top of Mount Lane).
Saw desperate people as early as 10.30 in Worsthorne trying to prevent water getting into their homes, but it was a losing battle.
If you don't have to go out, then stay put.

Re: Hebden Bridge.
Third time Hebden Bridge has flooded in 10 years, commiserations to all but it is nearly impossible to prevent. Level of water in the town yesterday was 3.5 meters compared to record 3.8 a few years ago. Heavy rain in Cornholme, Portsmouth and Lydgate catchment comes rushing down the steep valley and has got to go somewhere, even Prince Charles can't control this!
But did this occur 50 years ago?

it does beg the question as to whether its worth just abandoning towns and villages in flood plains

Re: Hebden Bridge.
Hebden Bridge’s problem is not just the catchment area of the upper Calder you mention above, it’s the fact that it lies on the confluence of three well fed water courses; the River Calder, Colden Water, and Hebden Water. All three of these meet within about half a mile of each other, and all three are supplied by massive moorland catchment areas that are(especially in the case of the Colden Water) feed steeply into the valley. Heavy rain on these three distinct catchment areas will usually lead to some trouble for the town, and Mytholmroyd, just a mile further down stream.CleggHall wrote: ↑Mon Feb 10, 2020 2:45 pmThird time Hebden Bridge has flooded in 10 years, commiserations to all but it is nearly impossible to prevent. To answer your final point, there’s lots of pictorial and written evidence that this has always happened.

First time you've got to feel for the residents, 2nd time 4 years later is damn unlucky and cant be easy doing a 2nd big clean operation.
But if anyone who stays around to be stung a 3rd time then they've only themselves to blame.
The problem for tight Yorkies is, it's not very often that the cheapest option is the best.

Re: Hebden Bridge.
I think a lot of money has been spent on defences since the last floods but the work hasn't been completed. How much difference these will make remains to be seen next time it happens (unless it happens again before they've finished).
Re: Hebden Bridge.
If the Chinese can build a hospital from scratch in about 4 days surely it shouldn't take 4 years to get some decent flood defences in place?

Re: Hebden Bridge.
There's been various people blaming it, on part, on the grouse moors above Hebden. It seems the grouse prefer various fresh shoots of new heather so the moors are burnt back to promote this new growth rather than established vegetation which would soak up more water and act as natural dams.

They can send a man to the moon and yet they still insist on making toilet doors which don't open outwards when you leave so you have to touch the door with you hands and risk all the dirty bacteria and poop left over by dirty buggers who don't wash their hands.

Not sure, but I'd be selling and relocating.
I'm not saying you'll get an identical house for the same price, but then where can you ever.
But whatever the facts or figures were, I'd be getting out of there instantly.
