Obviously the video is poor and can’t see what’s happened before but smashing someone like that?

Can't see the build up but the officer just swings at him like he's been waiting to do it his whole career.

I suspect that the bodycam footage will be "unavailable" and this will be brushed under the carpet.

Police treat football fans so differently it's weird.

Unavailable it's on here :D If this goes to the IOFPC the officer will be suspended pending a full investigation.

If he wasn't posing a danger to life then this is way beyond excessive force. The police preach (and rightfully so) about the one punch campaign. Hitting someone over the head with a blunt object like that can quite easily kill, if not cause life changing injuries. This has to be investigated

Typical police officer - act first, think later.

It’s footage like this is why I tell my children to stay away from the police and not to engage with them.

Sad thing is, that copper will get away with twatting someone around the head.

Remind me, next time I see some drug dealing, a break in, an assault, a fight etc I'll dial 999 and ask for anything other then the police because as human beings they at times display emotions and behaviour that their sub £30k salary for unsocial hours and dealing in the main with societies dregs is not acceptable. Who knows the guy allegedly hit might have had a knife or might have assaulted an officer or an away supporter before. The police are human and we all either make mistakes or get rushes of blood
FFS he ain't gonna die

How do you know? He might have a subdural hematoma. Not exactly symptomatic immediately. Could be fine for a short while after then his cranial pressure goes up and that's him gone.

It was his moment. This is why this thug joined the police.

You’re right, he’s not going to die from a dude running up from behind and walloping him around the head with a metal bar. He shouldn’t be so soft!

I am not a bandwagon jumper on. Just wait and see. Did he have a concealed weapon ? What was he doing so near the away fans ? FFS this lad might have attacked a SWFC fan with a blade or blunt instrument, we don't know, the point I am making is the police are human and have a difficult job.

It's like all these itchy trigger finger cops in the USA, waiting for any excuse to murder someone. Some can't wait to just get stuck in and release their own anger on people.

Neither am I.

That's why when I've seen mounted police at Rochdale trying to crush Burnley fans (children as well) against a wall when queuing up to get in to the ground, when I've seen police wading in to the Burnley crowd with truncheons at West Brom and Stoke, when I've seen Burnley fans being pulled out of pubs at various places for no reason etc etc....... I always thought to myself, I will never be a bandwagon jumper on.

Some coppers love their day out at the football.

Coppers are specifically trained not to have rushes of blood. They are trained to de-escalate where possible, not tw@t people over the back of the head. He could have subdued him by hitting his back or legs if necessary. The ginger bloke looked to be in a bit of a scrap, posing no threat to the copper's safety. This is nothing like a terror incident. Stop making an arse of yourself.

Video starts at the time of the policeman hitting the young lad.

So we can't say if it's justified or not.

It's certainly brutal and he's undoubtedly very young. And yes, the police often are harsh and unfair on football fans.

But can we say whether this was justified?

Not with the video in the link on the OP.

It’s not typical of a Police Officer to act first and think later.

I’ve been in South East London for 13 years and witnessed some truly horrific sights, and had to make split second decisions, with limited information available at the time, and with the best of intention. Some of the decisions I’ve had to make are life and death. The responsibility and implications are huge.

Watching the footage, it’s ******* horrific. I’m not going to comment too much because it doesn’t show whatever has happened leading up to the incident. But what I can say, and it’s something I’ve ALWAYS been taught, is hitting someone over in the head with a baton is an absolute last resort. It’s a red area, and I personally would only do it if there was a threat to life, to me or members of the public. There’ll be some explaining to do, and rightly so. Hopefully the young lad is ok.

I’ve said it before, but the way the Police in general treat football fans is horrendous. I’ve vowed never to go to another East Lancs derby as things are. The footage of the police wading into Burnley fans in the CFS all those years ago was also terrible.

I’ve no doubt the vast majority of people on here are law abiding, so the only real interaction they have with Police is at football matches. The one thing I’d like to say is policing practices at football is not representative of policing on the whole. Far from it.

I firmly believe we have the best Police in the world in the UK. Of course, there are bad eggs, as in every walk of life, and one incident like this overshadows the great work officers do every day in keeping the public safe. Hopefully, the bad eggs will be rooted out slowly but surely.

Im sorry you feel you have to tell your children that they can’t approach Police Officers for help. That shouldn’t be the way things are unfortunately, but I appreciate there may be reasons for that.

I can’t believe (or maybe I can) there are people on here saying we don’t see the whole thing & he may have had a weapon so the strike could be justified

Police are trained to target baton strikes to the main muscle groups in the arms & legs, not whack them around the head with it.

Believe me, a strike from a baton to the leg would have had a desired effect, especially to a kid that size

Impossible to answer without seeing the whole story. Nobidy likes to see police going OTT, but at the same time we ask them to stand on the front line for us. We've mostly been there in our time on the terraces, or kicking out time on a Saturday night. I could count on one hand the number of 'innocent' people I saw assaulted by the police.

I’ve complained on here before about police brutality. Mrs Trevor never went on again after she was assaulted by a copper in the Longside but I’ve also been saved from a good kicking when 4 of us were surrounded by about 20 Derby fans on Harry Potts Way by one wading into them.
That video doesn’t show any contact with his head. It shows a baton being swung, violently, and a lad sat on the ground holding his bleeding head. The cop could have been aiming for his shoulder and caught his head a glancing blow? As he wades in there are 3 involved he must have thought him the biggest threat?
This incident needs far more than is shown there to come to a comprehensive conclusion.

Lad was in his way, copper heard they were down to last two sausage rolls in Greggs, so nothing was going to stop him. You only see a copper shift that fast if there is food involved. Ran a good thirty yards to get that smack in so intel on the sausage rolls must have been good.
