New Griffin Park, Brentford.

Post by jdrobbo » Sun Feb 09, 2020 9:31 pm

Brentford will be one of those grounds that I’ll have to consign to the ‘not done’ list. My best chance was in the Championship winning season but work commitments prevented that. Anyway, here are some recent photos.

They’re due to move in next season.

Been there twice.
Crewe scored a goal from just inside their own half in my first visit.
John Mullin scored a winner, i think, in the Stan /Payton/IWWW promotion season?
Great ground... Will be missed.

Looks a bit ridiculous tbh.

Always enjoyed the current ground. Seen us win a few there too. Wrighty bagged a couple once and I think it may have been Damien Matthew with his best ever goal....overhead kick from memory

Going off those pictures, I imagine it will be fun trying to park up in that vicinity.

Didn't we play there in the Cup about 2004 or so?
Think we won.

Yes. Think that was the year we played Fulham at Loftus Road (1-1) before going onto play Watford in the quarters.

Must have rich owners to afford that. Looks decent to be fair.

That would be 2003 then. What a disaster that Watford Cup game was.

Yes we did...I think it was 2003 before we got knocked out at Watford in the QF? Pretty sure Beresford was keeping that day and had a stormer. Could be wrong though.

It’s quite clever how they’re funding it. But there’s something like 600 flats and a load of shops/restaurants within the structure that finances the ground and gives locals ‘affordable’ housing. Very striking for its size but as mentioned I can’t imagine the parking situ. Probably one to train to.

They're sharing that ground (for an initial period at least) with London Irish Rugby Club. LI have been playing at Reading's Madejski Stadium for 18 years now but that deal was contracted to end this season and LI wanted to move back to London where the Irish diaspora is larger. Presumably they'll have appropriate hard wearing turf.

I've been to Griffin Park a fair few times over the years (including the cup game mentioned above + the great performance there in our "24 undefeated" season. I liked visiting GP but no reason that the new ground shouldn't also be a good visit. It's closer to Kew Bridge Station than GP was to Brentford station and better access to south of the river. Very handy for The Express Tavern as well -a decent watering hole.

Should get to a few LI games there but hopefully no footy (unless Bees are promoted).

Griffin Park is on the flight path into Heathrow, and for years had an advert painted on the main stand roof, " Next time, you'd better fly KLM " .. :D

4th round in 2002/03. Didn’t play well but won 3-0.

Here's a nice fact.

On Tuesday, Leeds are the visitors and they haven't won there since 1950

Let's hope it continues as this is their last chance.

Was a very flattering 3 - 0. In fact almost a daylight robbery 3 -0. I worked with a few Brentford fans at the time so was very satisfying because of that as they were not amused at all. In fact the reference to Elland Road is interesting because I found quite a few of their fans to be mini Leeds-like....

the stand on the side looks strangely similar to the infamous “Bread Bin” stand (sponsored by Warburtons.)

The stall stand is not in keeping with the rest of it. Not for me I'm afraid.

Remember standing on the open end at Brentford on one occasion and seeing Concord fly over but it is one aircraft after another there.

As for the new ground, it looks very strange but at least it is not just a copy of another as so many grounds are now.

I've been following the development of this stadium on YouTube - no idea why - and I think this is one of the more characterful new grounds.

The "sawn off" bits at the south west and south east corners are due to the railways (and their embankments) not allowing a full rectangular area I guess. The ground/development is jammed into a triangle of rail-lines. Easy to see on here: https://beesotted.com/bias-issue-respon ... =1&et_blog
Presumably there are a few new bridges (or underpasses) being built to enable 15,000 people to get to and from, I dont think this triangle was very accessible previously.

That was it, probably three chances and scored with all of them. Had my worst view ever that day at Brentford, stuck in the corner of the main stand.

My companies main office has a perfect view of the stadium from the 4/5 TT floors. Whenever I am down there I always take a look at the progress it is an interesting shape and certainly not the normal design for a modern stadium. It is strange seeing it go up on what is basically an industrial estate though.

At least it isn’t outside the M25. A hop, skip and jump.

If you ever take pics, I'd appreciate them for the Ground Photos section on the site. There are others on there of grounds under construction and this is one I took of the new Spurs stadium when we last played at WHL in December 2016.
