Andre Gray
Seems like it was Andre that we asked for when Watford wanted Gibson.

I liked Andre Gray - not sure it's a progressive move though
Re: Andre Gray
He’s hardly proven that he’s tuned his banjo for the premier league. There won’t be many cows fearing a wholloping!
Re: Andre Gray
Sorry not for me.... unless of course Watford gave us £15m plus Gray for Gibson....
Now that would be vfm

Re: Andre Gray
His goal (our second) at Palace was one of the best goals I have seen.
Re: Andre Gray
I’d have him back for the simple fact it will be a further step away from the long ball we play when Wood and Barnes start.
Have someone with pace to get in behind the lines is an option we lack at present

Re: Andre Gray
mmmm.... Interesting one.
I'd have him back. As a swap for Gibson it would be a good deal. Gibson isn't going to play whereas Andre would offer something different up front.
I would even say Andre would do better than Barnes.

Probably made sense if the offer was right, it would have allowed vydra to move, and gray would be a better option than him off the bench.... Nixon did say we could go back in the summer, but I would have thought there will be better options then....

Re: Andre Gray
Not sure about that. Gray seemed to thrive off long balls into the channels, whereas his general link up play was below par.
Not a bad 4th choice striker but I'd rather we took a gamble with a younger up and comer rather than someone who has already looked out of his depth at this level.

No. Just no.
Reeks of planning for the championship to me. Decent forward at that level, not at this.
If it was delefeu, different matter.

Re: Andre Gray
Can’t see it happening because of his wages - he’ll see out his contract I reckon.
If he could pick up the form he showed at Burnley he would offer us something different with his pace for sure. The worry is that he has hardly been picked to start for Watford and they have had a lot of injuries and suspensions whilst he has been there. It’s not like Watford have been pulling up any trees either or play that different a style to us etc.
A year long loan swap with Gibson might work as long as we didn’t have an obligation to buy Gray at the end of it (and Watford had to buy Gibson !!!)

Re: Andre Gray
Right now I think forward places are up for grabs. Chris Wood seems like he is first pick and Vydra has no chance. So Gray, JayRod and Barnes would be pretty equal for the second spot and would mean we have players we can bring on from the bench.
I’d hope this would not be at the cost of the other positions we need to get players in but more of a case of Watford being interested in Gibson and Vydra (and Gibson) tying up big wages here and playing virtually no part.
Might also be people adding up 2 + 2 because of the Gibson link to Watford - we have got to be looking at releasing the likes of Gibson, Vydra and a few others to release the wages we need to bring in quality.

Re: Andre Gray
Had wages and the fee's all been agreeable and Gray been up for it would have been a good move.
When he was last with us he was our #1 striker which he was not good enough to be. This time he would be replacing Vydra (who we could have sold) as a back up option.
Wood and Jay starting with Barnes and Gray as options on the bench and cover for injuries and poor form would be a great attacking line up for a club with our budget

Re: Andre Gray
Wouldn't be a player I'd be desperate to see back, but I'm not sure of the "he's not Premier League standard" argument. If you're looking at top 6, then no he obviously isn't, but his record for a bottom half team is not too bad. 23 goals in 111 appearances isn't great, but only 62 of those have been starts. His goalscoring record is similar to that of Barnes.

Re: Andre Gray
I think second slot up front very definitely is Rodriguez's at present. He's been excellent over the past month, give or take a couple of chances he himself knows he ought to have buried.
I assume that if there was any interest in Gray, it was on the basis that as a short term signing he'd allow Vydra to leave. But long term, I don't think we need 4 out and out strikers - we need 3, plus either a "one for the future" or someone who can play wide as well as up top. But it is undoubtedly pace we lack.

Re: Andre Gray
I mean he is quick, and he did well for us... but... his touch! For the love of God, won't somebody think of his touch! Ball control is not one of his finer skills.
Re: Andre Gray
But Barnes was “definitely” our no 2 striker a couple of months ago....it was more a point that there would probably be little between Gray, Jay and Barnes and the latter 2 are likely to pick up injuries at their age and none of the 3 are prolific.
I agree if Jay plays like he has done recently then he’s no 2 (actually arguably he’s no1)...but at the start of the season it was Barnes no 1 and being talked about for England etc.
Also agree that we probably don’t need 4 out and out strikers - at least not 4 on as much money as they are now (or would be with Gray instead of Vydra)

Re: Andre Gray
Adds pace
Already has rapport with Dyche & the club.
If he plays he's around a 10 goal a season striker at this level, which is what we can reasonably hope for.
We will always want a Wood/Vokes target man but adds competition for the second striker role JayRod has filled.
Downside is at 28 not one for the long term and no resale value, so fee must be right. But definitely a couple decent seasons in him still with the right manager.
Also sends a nice message: the grass isn't always greener

Re: Andre Gray
I couldn’t see anything being in this for a number of reasons, main being that as good as Gray was in the Championship, let’s say he lacks PL pedigree imo. Also think Gibson will come into his own next year should Tarks move on, which I would expect to be highly probable.

Re: Andre Gray
Gray got nine goals for us in his first season in the Premier League, that's quite impressive. Since then he's not had regular minutes at Watford.ashtonlongsider wrote: ↑Mon Feb 10, 2020 2:05 pmI couldn’t see anything being in this for a number of reasons, main being that as good as Gray was in the Championship, let’s say he lacks PL pedigree imo.
Last season still managed 7 goals and two assists in 1350 mins, than only 39% of the season in game time.
There's players with far worse records in starting XIs let alone on benches.
We applaud Barnes and Wood for hitting double figures, if we did unearth 15+ goal striker we'd have a real struggle keeping them for any length. So that 10 goal a season, flying under the radar striker is about our level and I think Gray still fits the mold.

Re: Andre Gray
When we heard Barnes was going to be out for some time and with only two serious strikers in Jay and Wood, it would have been a great bit of business as a short term loan with Gibson going the other way until the season end.
He has pace, scored lots of goals for us and a far greater option on the bench than Vydra. He would have a a point to prove. If Wood and Jay get injured we are currently screwed until Barnes returns

To be fair Gray was never super quick and not the sort of player to cause defences many problems .That said he was literally starved of service on many occasions . There’s lots worse but a backward move surely

Re: Andre Gray
I'm happy to have someone with his eye for goal and genuine pace to give us another option rather like Jay Rod is currently offering us. I don't think we have many players who can trap a ball at the same standard as the Premier League elite so his percieved lack of control isn't a factor.

Re: Andre Gray
Given that was the name doing the rounds from before deadline day it was an easy one to call yesterday. I'm sure there is an interest but the info locally last week was that there was no suggestion of a swap deal at all.
Have to say I'm surprised how much he's struggled to get game time at Watford but from what I've picked up on visits to Vicarage Road, their fans don't like him. I thought he did a terrific job for us for two years.

At the end of the day Gibson is a far better central defender than Gray will ever be
