Would safe standing increase the ground capacity?

Convinced the only reason the club haven’t done anything with the CricketField end is because they’re waiting for the green light with safe standing.

Well that and the dry powder store!

What concerns me is that even if/when clubs instal safe standing, away fans will still stand in the seated areas.

Don't think it can with rail seats as it would still be one person per seat, even if you don't use it.

Is there a concept of safe standing where the barriers are there but without the seats?

That will be very much a stipulation. I'm told there will be a zero tolerance to people standing in designated seating areas once there are standing areas.

In some grounds it would, others not, all depends on the terracing the seats are on whether they can fit in more than one per seating area in when standing. Celtic, for instance, is, I think the same number sitting as standing but the capacity increases significantly at Dortmund.

Compulsory seating was never needed. The solution to the yobs was restriction on lateral and vertical movement. Thankfully times have changed and although there will always be the loony few there are far less now.

Can't see it anytime soon on the Turf, they've recently replaced all the seats in the lower tiers.

What on earth are you on about? All seater came in as a direct result of the Hillsborough tragedy.

And would a restriction on lateral and vertical movement not have been useful at Hillsbrough?

United have applied for 1,500 seats to have rail seating and season ticket holders in the area of the ground where it is planned to be installed have been informed a trial is likely before the end of the season.

From Manchester United:

 As previously communicated, the club are in favour of rail seating in parts of Old Trafford in principle

 Following changes to the Sports Ground Stadium Authority Green Guide, we have recently conducted a study into the feasibility of a rail seating trial within the stadium.

 A formal proposal was made to the local Safety Advisory Group in December 2019 to request a trial in a small section of the stadium (up to 1,500 seats in the North East Quadrant). Our belief is that the introduction of rail seating will enhance spectator safety in areas of the stadium where – as with other clubs – we have seen examples of persistent standing.

 The SAG committee is reviewing the request. This is not an automatic approval process. We will discuss the proposal in detail with the relevant authorities and will work through their compliance and review processes.

 We will provide an update as soon as we receive any further information or a decision.

Very small seats at old Trafford which surprised me...... Same at Turf Moor my grandson wedged in between a couple of Fat uns! Probably why some stand the seats are "way" to small at a lot of grounds Arsenal being the exeption.

I'd like to see standing in the cricket field end, I was stood there when we stuffed Napoli not sure I could handle 2 hours every home game now I'd give it a go though.

Horrendous at OT - neither leg room nor width in that corner.

Aye you could. Great European nights they were on dark smoke filled terraces.

So ManU are having a 1500 trial at standing
I cant see the other 72500 sitting down anytime soon
The gutless approach to making fans sit rather than stand is out of control at Old Trafford
