Has anyone on here had their car stolen, and did the Police recover it?

I'm just wondering what the chances of my daughter getting her car back. Stolen yesterday.
We have CCTV footage and other quite detailed info which I don't want to share on here at the moment, but so far the enthusiasm of the Police seems to lack any urgency.
It's upsetting because she is a hard working person who is careful with her money, but this looks like it's going to cost her a few grand just to replace what she had, given that the insurance is unlikely to refund what she paid for it.

Have to say I had mine stolen around 30 years ago in Manchester. The police could not have been more helpful and it was recovered with not too much damage.

Unfortunately, you'll be given a crime reference number and that will be it. If you're lucky, someone will actually come and view your CCTV footage but don't expect much else.
Hope I'm wrong though.

Re: Has anyone on here had their car stolen, and did the Police recover it?
My Astra was stolen in summer 2017 with clear CCTV of who had stolen it. There was even ANPR scans of the car at various times so they knew when it was taken and roughly where.
The car was recovered after it was involved in a Police chase and they crashed it near the bridge near what used to be Barden Mill.
After I was informed of it's recovery I was not told anything else, not who took it or whether they were charged. It was like it never happened.
As you say, there is no urgency because it's not a violent crime, it's just a theft.
I lost all my no claims bonuses because of it.

Re: Has anyone on here had their car stolen, and did the Police recover it?
Is the CCTV of good enough quality to allow ID of offenders?
I see on many occasions that people say they have CCTV, which is great, but only if somebody can positively identify and offender and is willing to stand up in the box and swear to it.
And what is the lack of urgency you are referring to?
I know that if there are any lines of enquiry they will definitely want it recovered and reunited with the owner.
Quite often though, the job falls down when the report is made to civilian, often agency staff at HQ and the crime report is generated at source, without frontline staff actually knowing anything about it.

CCTV is good quality, and one person can be identified.
What I meant by lack of urgency is that I thought that in this day and age ANPR info could be used, but no feedback is forthcoming from the Police.
I'm concerned that although the car was stolen yesterday afternoon, it may already have been broken up for parts.

I only dealt with the police via phone calls. Mine was recovered 4 months later and I didn't find out about it until 3 days after it had been smashed up.icu81b4 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 13, 2020 12:20 pmCCTV is good quality, and one person can be identified.

Unfortunately there's nothing anyone can do. It'll be long gone now and had it's number plates changed. People steal cars to go commit crimes in other parts of the country.
Re: Has anyone on here had their car stolen, and did the Police recover it?
My first car was stolen from my workplace in central manchester about 20 years ago, police took all necessary details.
12 months went by, insurance paid out, then i had a call from the police asking me if i wanted my car back as it had been recovered in an armed robbery in northumberland!!!
My guess is that you wont hear of it again until its been used in another crime unfortunately they dont have the resource to look out for individual stolen cars.

Re: Has anyone on here had their car stolen, and did the Police recover it?
Going back quite a few years my brother had his car stolen and a few days later it was found in Manchester. My brother went down to the Burnley police car compound to recover his car only to find it had been stolen from the open police compound. True story.
Re: Has anyone on here had their car stolen, and did the Police recover it?
Unfortunately back in 2016 I had 3 cars stolen in one night - mine, my wife’s and my daughters brand new car.
The police were absolutely fantastic - and to be honest they could not have been more helpful and supportive than they were.
It was a massive upheaval and very expensive even with all the insurance cover - it was not just the cars but also having to change locks on house doors etc.
They did actually recover my daughters car a week later but it was in an awful condition and ended up being written off - we lost thousands on that.
Unbelievably only 7 weeks later the 2 new cars myself and my wife had got to replace the stolen ones were again stolen. Again the police were brilliant - this time both cars were recovered within 24 and 48 hours and both were in the same new condition with no damage. It was still a massive upheaval - not only changing house door keys and replacing a window but because both cars did not have our car keys with them we had to get the locks changed on both cars which again cost a fortune.
For the second thefts the scroats who stole my car were stupid enough to video themselves driving at 120 mph on the M65 - somebody I know saw this video through a friend who knew them and sent it to me. Even with this evidence and knowing who it was the police were not allowed to use the video in evidence but they caught the 2 lads breaking into a house in Fence later in the same week.
I think the first 48 to 72 hours is crucial in finding the cars as the police said that the thefts usually just park it up somewhere and it’s after this period they arrange for one of the city gangs from Liverpool or Manchester to take it and its then broken up and engine / parts sold.
It was definitely a nightmare for me that cost me a lot of money but cost me even more in time in dealing with everything. The police were great throughout this. The insurance companies were very mixed - one was very good and fair and the other 2 we had to deal with were awful. My advice would be that if the insurance company start to mess you about do not accept it - get evidence ready yourself in terms of what similar cars are currently up for sale for at approved dealers etc and don’t accept an offer if you believe it to be unfair.
Hope it turns out ok and try and remember it’s only a car and nobody has got hurt

We got up one Sunday morning to find my dads car had been stolen.
Few months later he got notified that Cleveland Police had recovered it.
The day before it was stolen, Darlington were the visitors to Turf Moor

The best way of trying to get it back is share like mad on social media. Some thieves leave it nearby to see if it gets picked up on a tracker. You might of left it too late now though.icu81b4 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 13, 2020 12:05 pmI'm just wondering what the chances of my daughter getting her car back. Stolen yesterday.

You will have to hope that the offender caught on CCTV is wanted for other crimes and the police want to build a case against him.

Although not quite the same - we had our student house in Preston burgled a few years back where one lad lost pretty much everything he had. Police offered little to no assistance.
I have friends who who live their now and they have been recently burgled - had CCTV so have a good image of the perpetrator. Still nothing from police to assist.
We had been advised that with the games consoles especially, as soon as they are logged in online, a serial number should have been able to trace location. Never materialized.

Re: Has anyone on here had their car stolen, and did the Police recover it?
Our patio doors were forced in Sept 17, and my Mondeo & wallet was stolen, at about 5.45 on a Saturday morning. I noticed at 8 o'clock, rang the police and our card companies. We asked if they'd tried to use the cards, and they'd made 5 purchases ( all below £30, fags/beers ) at " Convenience stores " on contactless, before they were asked for a PIN, and the Bank's security systems kicked in and blocked the cards.
We asked the Bank for times and places of transactions and had them ready for the Police at 10.15, when they called round. They went round to view CC TV the same day, & advised that the people using them were, " known to them " ! Turned out they'd bought the cards off the car-jackers ...
Long story short, the car was recovered on Wyre Street, in Padiham at 2 am on the Tuesday morning, after the " stinger " had been employed. It was on false plates, which had been nicked off another silver Mondeo. One lad made a run for it, but was caught by the police dogs, which meant he spent that morning in A&E handcuffed to one of Lancashire's finest !! Car was dented on most panels, and written off. Insurance payout was fair, and due to protected " No claims ", insurance was OK. Culprit ( from Padiham, initials R.M. ) was jailed for a short term ... before the car was recovered, I'd mentioned to a couple of mates from Padiham that I'd had my car nicked, and they both suggested the same name !!
It's not pleasant, best of luck, " icu81b4 " !!

Is there any reason you can’t post the stolen car details on here, for people to look out for it for you and advise the police, if seen.

Many years ago we had a car stolen from the multi storey near the Kierby while we were on a night match. The police had recovered it (and the blokes who were syphoning petrol from it) before it was even reported stolen!!

Re: Has anyone on here had their car stolen, and did the Police recover it?
I think it depends on who stole it, luckily it's not happened to me but I know a few people who've been victims of car theft. If it was an organised gang you've probably not got much chance, this happened to my mates Dad, the thieves broke into the house and took nothing but the keys to his company Beamer. Whereas other mates have had theirs nicked by joy riding kids and the cars been found shortly after, sadly usually bashed up after being ragged about.

Police don’t care. Too much work and paper work for little gain. If no one has been hurt and you aren’t rich or powerful then what are you going to do? If they did spend man hours finding your car what’s in it for them? There’s money to be made in fining people for going 34 in a 30 instead. Your no claims bonus ruined? Can’t get to work? And you have lost out on thousands of ponds? Pffft so what? Who are you? Nobody that’s who. If they catch the thief they’ll only get community service they won’t do or a suspended sentence and they’ll be back stealing cars in no time. Probably isn’t worth the effort arresting them and doing the paper work in all honesty. It isn’t worth the effort at all, especially when the police are understaffed as it is. If your car gets stolen unless you’re very lucky then in these times it’s best to say goodbye to it.

In 1970 a friend of mine had his car nicked one Friday night with his golf clubs on the back seat. The insurance company were about to settle the compensation when it was found about 2 miles from where it was nicked, the clubs still on the back seat and about 700 yards from a police station

My dads was taken, involved in numerous police chases and they knew exactly who did it but feared going on the ‘site’ where they lived due to them being a dangerous family and community. Didn’t charge them with it in court as they were already charging them for armed robbery and other serious crimes.

Re: Has anyone on here had their car stolen, and did the Police recover it?
I once had a car stolen. I got a phone call to say where they found it. When I went to claim it, the car was not where the Police said so I rang them... “Yes, they replied... we’ve just been informed by a member of the public that it has been stolen from where the first thieves abandoned it”.
Needless to say I wish you luck.

We were burgled in the middle of last year, and they took my mrs's car, with the keys, and the keys to my van.
They didn't get my van as it wasn't parked nearby.
The police were great initially. They were at my house within 20 minutes of calling them, followed by scenes of crime a few hours later.
They did let themselves down a little when her car was found abandoned a couple of weeks later though.
Who ever had stolen it had smashed it up the point of it being a write off, and instead of informing us it had been found, the first we heard it had been recovered was when we were sent a bill from the recovery company who the police had called to remove it from where it had been left.

I clearly remember staggering home from the Cats Whiskers one Friday night in my best navy blue velvet jacket to find the police outside my parents house.
My dad's car had been nicked & the police had found it battered and bruised over in Clitheroe.
They asked me if I would go over to Clitheroe police station with them to collect it. I was well oiled but because it was the police, on parade, so to speak.
They explained it would save them an enormous amount of time if I could collect it whilst they were on duty & would put a call out to " see me home"
I duly collected the almost wreck and drove home at a sensible speed at 3.00am in the morning with the only other cars on the road home a couple of police cars at various junctions.
My dad was amazed when he woke up in the morning and opened the curtains.

Not sure it’s the same lads - these were well dressed and regularly spent time in the barbers near the Tim Bobbin apparently. Loads of people knew what they did but they didn’t give a toss as they know that even if they went down they’d spend weeks / months inside and then they’d be back out doing it all again and earning loads of money from it to spend on clothes etc. And that’s if they got caught which most of the time they didn’t !!Burnley1989 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 13, 2020 6:59 pmPretty sure I remember reading about this when they were sentenced. I would say ZERO chance.
For a start they probably won't even visit you. Then if you DO have any cctv footage, and can convince them to come round they MIGHT actually want to view it. Then, if they do, despite there being clear and obvious images of said scrotes, they will claim they cant actually ID anyone, despite being given the name of the scrote who nicked it 'cos three different people who saw it independently came up with the same name. Then they MIGHT take the footage away on a memory stick to see if anyone else at the station can't ID the scrote (they'd be right) and never actually bother to return it, despite numerous reminders. Then they won't let you know the result of their `investigation` unless you make numerous calls to try to find out.
You'd think I had an actual experience just like that wouldn't you?
Good luck.

Technically, they aren't supposed to be downloading anything to a memory stick that isn't encrypted for security purposes, yet fail to issue, or supply them for officers to use. Now people are being asked to upload their footage into a public portal on their website so they can view and copy it.bobinho wrote: ↑Thu Feb 13, 2020 8:28 pmI would say ZERO chance.

With regards to ID, I'm not sure what people expect. Yes they can circulate the image online and on internal systems, but if nobody knows who it is, or is unwilling to testify in court that it is who they say, then there isn't some magic computer system with the swanky facial recognition systems like you see on telly.

They didn’t download it. I did and handed the stick over after they watched it back on my screen.
I’m sure there are loads of reasons why they can’t actually do what is wanted of them...
As for ID, said scrote is well known to the police AND the courts and EASILY identifiable as I thought I’d stated. Surely we are past the point of standing up in court and pointing? They were given the name, a simple visit could be made to see if it is him or not, then they’ve got him bang to rights? Or not. (It wasn’t ‘not’)

Re: Has anyone on here had their car stolen, and did the Police recover it?
A cousin of mine, who was a heating engineer, had his wife's car stolen from outside their house.
A week later he got a call out to a garage to repair a boiler, and yes, you've guessed it, there
was his wife's car on ramps and stripped to the bare bones.
This was pre mobile 'phones, so he pretended to nip out for a spare part for the boiler and promptly
contacted the police. The scrotes were arrested and prosecuted appropriately.
I had a company car stolen off my drive many years ago and, apparently, it was eventually found over in Spain !!!!

UPDATE :- My daughter has just been told today that the Police have her car. and it's still in good condition (with false plates), They've had it since the 6th but have just got around to update her.
Apparently the guy driving the car saw a police car behind him and thought they were following him (they weren't) and sped off, So the police thought this was suspicious and gave chase. the guy drove down a dead end - jumped out of the car and ran off, no They didn't catch him.
Anyway the car belongs to the insurance people now.

The reason why insurances don't pay out too quickly is because most cars are recovered. I had 2 (that's two) nicked in a very short period of time about 20-odd years ago. The police told me that at the time and I did get BOTH back in various states of repair. One was nicked from my work in Rochdale and found a few days later near Bernard Mannings club. Everything had been nicked from it but, ironically, the only thing in the car when I got to it was a steering lock that wasn't even mine, they'd used it to break the bloody window.

Re: Has anyone on here had their car stolen, and did the Police recover it?
Police know already who commits most crimes. They sometimes let it slide if it involves more important crimes. Not devaluing your loss. They know who stole it and sometimes are awaiting the bigger crime on most occasions. By that I mean. They're not going to go in gung-ho if your car is stolen for a 'bigger picture' drug deal where they could potentially arrest a gang and hopefully then get your car back and save a load of lives and lock up a serious gang. Police around here know who and where, hell most people here know who commits crimes. Sometimes it's slowly, slowly catchy monkey. We all know they've done it, even the police do but evidence is key and your car may be part of a bigger jigsaw. See it ever day and asked the police why they don't arrest them. Copper said. Bigger picture. It's annoying but I can see their point. Your car may be nicked but they may hold the key to locking away 10 violent drug dealers.
