49 sides have played in the Premier League, yet I think only ten have won their first game!
After a bit of thinking, checking and collaborating, I think that only eleven of the 49 teams have won their first ever game in the Premier League. And it’s a really surprising list:
The only teams I can think of who WON their first ever match in the Premier League.... quite a surprising list:
Sheff Utd
Norwich
Leeds
Huddersfield
Coventry City
Bradford
Nottingham Forest
Hull
Blackpool
Portsmouth
(Feel free to add to the list if any more spring to mind)
So none of the teams who’ve won the Premier Division have ever won their first game.
Next in line...Liverpool? Nah, they didn’t win either; they lost 1-0 at Nottingham.

On trying to find some facts for this, I find that only 6 clubs have won the title.
Amazing really.

Rovers are the only champions to be relegated.
TWICE.

Nottingham Forest were the first team to be relegated from the Premier League in the 1992–93 season.
They were joined by Middlesbrough and Crystal Palace.

Ah, do you mean the first ever first day ? The inaugural day, in fact.

Yeah that's the one. Surely that counts in the figures. Also Norwich are in the list twice?Funkydrummer wrote: ↑Thu Feb 13, 2020 11:20 pmAh, do you mean the first ever first day ? The inaugural day, in fact.

5 wins 6 draws on week 1 of the Prem League so 5 out of 22. Unsurprising that the rate since then has remained equally low as newly promoted teams are likely to be weaker teams and therefore lose or draw more than they win.
In fact once you break it down the stat makes a lot of sense

I’m more surprise that more than 50% of the 92 clubs have played in the Premier League.

I think there have been 60 clubs who have had at least one season in the top flight since the second world war.

It’s interesting that all of those teams have been relegated and none of them are what you’d call “established” premier sides

Will be interesting, sort of, to see who is team 50. Of the current top 10 in the Championship only Brentford and Preston have never played in the PL.

Don't think Luton Millwall or Bristol City have played in the PL. First Division-yes PL-no
The 49 are the present 20 all of the Championship minus PNE, Bristol C Brentford Millwall Luton
League One Portsmouth, Sunderland, Blackpool, MK Dons aka Wimbledon, Coventry, Ipswich, Bolton

Thanks for this,
I think it’s ten. The list would’ve been more suited to the football league.

So.… .
I have to ask.
Of these 49 is it possible for some whizz to generate a league table of number of seasons in the Premiership / Premier League (and, whilst they are at it, a league table of numbers of seasons in the old First Division / Premiership / Premier League)???

could be in the Top 30 next season - long way to go to catch our friends down the road - we will have done exceptionally well to pass them in the table - would be a real champagne moment given comparable financial strength when the points were earned, which would explain why it will probably take much longer to attain the same points totalBosscat wrote: ↑Fri Feb 14, 2020 4:48 pmWe are 36th...

Swindon? Didn’t they never play? Weren’t they relegated 2 divisions before even kicking a ball due to Lou Macari’s betting?
Edit: googled it. They went back up a couple of seasons later. Completely forgotten that.
