Taking the misses for a belated valentine's day meal in a bit of a pricey restaurant tonight.

That goal, the celebration of the whole team and the result will make the hefty bill I'm gonna be looking at , a whole lot easier to swallow.

Delighted for Vydra, made my day it has.
Hi Ringo, it's the food you have to swallow - you only need to pay the bill. ;)

Pleased for Matej Vydra. He's scored a great goal and got a lot of minutes on the pitch. The 3 points are all his. Maybe this will be the boost his Burnley career needs. On the other hand, Rowls has posted some perceptive observations on the rest of Matej's play.

The ball from Hendrick was a peach of a pass and he very nearly did it again later on.
Certainly was, were missing a trick if we don’t persuade Hendrick to stay , really does a lot of the legwork in midfield and creates too.

The ball from Hendrick was perfectly executed, the touch the turn the little dink over the defenders leg and then the strike were outstanding, the joy in his face when it ripped the back of the net was brilliant. He was as some have alluded to absolutely knackered by the end, but if you’ve been sat on your ass not playing for months on end you tend not to be match fit. He gave it his all, wasn’t perfect but offered us something different . When he took the two defenders out of the game with one simple turn on the byline and no foul was given I thought that would have been his chance gone, how wrong I was....hopefully the confidence is there for the lad now. Well done Matej and well done Burnley!

P.S

Hendricks ball was quality

Afternoon Paul, hope you're well. It's the first time we've eaten out since Christmas so I'm really looking forward to it to be honest.

Cant disagree with Rowls' remarks. What I would say is, how often do we see a player just need a goal to boost his confidence, and that lead to him looking like a different player from then on in!? Hope that's the case with Vydra.

Have to say that the performance of the team as a whole was a classic gritty, "Dyche-inspired effort to grind the result out." "Workman-like, organised, well drilled, each player knows his role and what's expected of him" etc etc. You know what they'll be saying on MOTD tonight and in the papers tomorrow!

And long may it continue!......

Goal aside I don’t think he played poorly at all, movement was excellent, Hendrick nearly found him again, Vydra took the **** out of two defenders and slid JRod in, Mcneil should’ve pulled the ball back to him. He looked leggy last 10 but that’s to be expected. Delighted for him

Have to agree. Brilliant goal and made up for him, but he looked way off the mark fitness wise.
It's a difficult situation, not playing. Vydra did look off the pace and lacking in some areas of his full game, but it isn't always down to general fitness. Mental factors can also come into play. Getting the chance after sitting on the sidelines for so long can make a player nervous, which can lead to hesitation and indecision. Putting in the work on the training ground can't fully replicate the true in game experience and all it entails. Sometimes it can take a player a few games to get into their full flow, especially strikers who can be more prone to confidence issues. I don't think the weather conditions were ideally suited to the way Vydra plays either.

That strike was quality though. It shows he has talent and a keen eye for goals. Really happy for him. Having players of his quality as backup options is good, but it is also something of a problem in terms of giving them game time. I hope he gets a few more run outs this season. If he is still with us for next season I would like to see him go out on loan to get regular game time. It did wonders for Nahki.

Maybe we could raid Aberdeen in the Summer, bringing in Sam " the mountain " Cosgrove ( as our fourth striker ) and Scott McKenna to replace Gibson ( left footed centre back ). I don't think we would be wide of the mark with £12m for both of them - £4m for Cosgrove and £8m for McKenna.

I think that might be the way we have to go to try and keep players happy, while moving forward. Instead of spending big fees on first team quality players, ready to play as soon as they come in, we could buy lesser players who will step up to the level over time.

Instead of paying £20m for a game ready centre back ( who will spend a fair bit of their time on the bench ) we could buy two work in progress centre backs for £10m. One of them would sit on the bench in the fourth slot and the other would go out on loan, then they swap over mid season.

Game time for both of them, playing experience for both of them, no putting all of our eggs in one expensive basket and stepping out for a couple of rare first team games if they are needed won't diminish our strength much. As an extra bonus we would have two happy players coming through instead of one unhappy player on the bench.

Every player needs time to adapt to the team, minutes here and there aren't enough, you don't want wood to be out any longer than needed, but vydra deserves his chance, knowing dyche if wood is ok for next week, vydra will have to sit back down, but he'll be smiling all week,I for one feel great he had a great day 👍

As we have 34 points earlier than I'm sure the majority of us would have hoped for.... there is surely an opportunity to give Vydra an extended run , regardless of the injury situation.

Wonder who will replace him on the bench if Wood is out next game? Do we have any strikers in the U23 capable of stepping up?

Delighted for him. Always wanted him to gave a chance to play.
Does he start next week?...I think he should. Running the channels isn't his game, so as long we play to his strengths that may help him.
In any event, it puts him in the shop window.

Does anyone know how close Barnes is to being back? You'd like to think if Wood is out next week Vydra has done enough today to get himself a start.

I'd fully expect Barnes to begin from the bench anyway, and be eased back in.

Tough call for SD if the remaining 3 are fit.

Got the impression Barnes was a week away from SD’s presser this week. Assume Woods will now miss a couple of weeks of he’s tweaked his hammy. J-Rod & Vydra to start next week with Barnes on the bench, I’d say.

A very winnable game at home to Bournemouth too, and a good opportunity for Vydra to bang another one in.

Dyche has played an absolute blinder here. Holding Vydra back to increase that hunger and desire. When he brought Long on in front of Vydra you just knew that he’d knuckle down and be unleashed at just the right time. The staged Wood injury was a bit obvious though.

I was just hoping today he could just get that one chance to show us all he had something, because he hadn't been given the chance to show it.
Made up for him.
Wood is normally out for 6 weeks with his muscle injuries.
Hope he gets a run and proves he is a asset to BFC.

Good to see the support he is getting from this board. He looked a little lost in the first half, which is fully understandable, but we now know he has a moment of majic in his locker. Have to say I don't think anyone else on that pitch (with the possible exception of Danny Ings) could have executed that goal. Lets hope when he next comes on at the Turf he gets a rousing reception which he deserves if only for his patience

Very pleased for him to get the goal today. It must be very tough getting so few chances.

Today with that finish we saw why we bought him. That's something that he could bring to the team. Our other strikers don't really offer too many finishes like that.

We also saw why his chances have been limited. His pressing play was very poor and despite him being match-fit he looked a good few yards behind our usual pressing standards. His link-up play wasn't quite there either and he offered a lot less down the channels whilst being easily pushed off the ball.

But given a single half a chance in or around the box and he is (perhaps?) our best option.

Well done today though Matej and a super finish!

Ha. No one is 'match fit' until they are actually playing regularly, look at Rodriguez.

I'd like to see him play a bit more, and it may happen if both Wood and Barnes are out injured. But he would have to improve is off the ball play to warrant a starting slot ahead of AB or CW.

Rodriguez off the ball play was rank bad until he got regular games, but he probably benefitted from a more generous judgement regime.

Lots of fans seem to think we are the only ones who have a Vydra situation or who have spent big up front and are no better off.
A few teams below us
Southampton today Che Adams - came on as 3rd substitute and cost twice as much as Vydra
Brighton - Alireza Jahanbakhsh. Cost £17m and scored his first goal after signing 17 months ago with that great over head kick a few weeks ago.
Watford - Andre Gray - again twice as much as Vydra. Now 3rd or possibly 4th choice forward
West Ham - Haller £45m !!....I could name a few more at West Ham almost as bad signings
Newcastle - Joleinton - £40m
Villa - Wesley £22m
Bournemouth - Solanke £20m
Palace - Benteke £30m

Against some of these lot Vydra is now starting to look like a bargain !!

Chuffed to bits for the lad that he got his chance, and that he took it.

The reaction of all the other players showed how much they like him.

Phil Bird also tweeted that he was chuffed for him and that he was a good lad.

Was brilliant to see Lennon smiling run over and jump on him.
Also the fact that Brownhill was involved in celebrating as well. He looked genuinely pleased. Couldn’t imagine Drinkwater being involved like that. Everything is looking rosey. Can’t imagine why Hendrick doesn’t sign a new contract. Such a wonderful club to be at.

It was a absolutely brilliant goal by Vydra but I'm finding it somewhat baffling that a lot of fans on here are almost wishing Wood is out for a while so that Vydra gets a run in the team. We are a poorer team without Wood in it.

Magnificent goal and his movement/skill throughout the game bar the last ten was excellent to say he’s had no game time.

Just seen the goals. We've had Jay's strike at OT and now this superb goal today from Matej Vydra. This really isn't good enough. Burnley only play horrible football.

He's silenced a few with that goal
Certainly did, our bacon d’or rated striker got the winner.

Hopefully the same fans realised today why he hasn’t been playing more often.

Have to agree. Brilliant goal and made up for him, but he looked way off the mark fitness wise.
To be fair how can anyone look match fit when they never get a match? SD was saying after the Jay rod goal at UTD he is getting there as far as his sharpness goes, and then says today its good to see the players ready to step in at any given moment? I can see Vydra on the bench again against Bournemouth and Ash straight in to the side, which then makes a mockery of the performance = shirts argument.

It was 1 - 1 when Wood went off.
