Can you be offside from a corner?
I’ve just seen Wolves’s disallowed goal from last night on MOTD. Aside from the argument over whether his heel was or was not in an offside position, I always understood that if you’re behind the line of the ball when it is played, you’re onside. The “offside” player receives the ball directly from a corner, so how can he be ruled offside?

They make it up as they go along.
Re: Can you be offside from a corner?
Already discussed on another thread, but the offside was given against the corner taker after Jota returned the ball to him so didn't receive the ball directly from the corner.scouseclaret wrote: ↑Sat Feb 15, 2020 11:13 pmI’ve just seen Wolves’s disallowed goal from last night on MOTD. No. You can't.scouseclaret wrote: ↑Sat Feb 15, 2020 11:13 pmI’ve just seen Wolves’s disallowed goal from last night on MOTD. But since it wasn't him that was given offside, there's no problem.

Re: Can you be offside from a corner?
It’s not though. It’s clear from the VAR still that the player who’s foot is “offside” is Jota.

Re: Can you be offside from a corner?
So you think they froze the VAR still at the moment Jota played it and declared him (Jota) offside?scouseclaret wrote: ↑Sat Feb 15, 2020 11:23 pmIt’s not though. It’s clear from the VAR still that the player who’s foot is “offside” is Jota.
I've watched the same thing and it's clear that it's Neto who is given offside.
Re: Can you be offside from a corner?
No, it was Neto, the corner taker.scouseclaret wrote: ↑Sat Feb 15, 2020 11:23 pmIt’s not though. It’s clear from the VAR still that the player who’s foot is “offside” is Jota.

Re: Can you be offside from a corner?
I started the earlier thread, Scouse. Thinking along your lines that you can’t be offside if the ball is played backwards. On checking with the FA website the law only states “when the ball is touched” and nothing about direction of touch. So he was correctly given offside.scouseclaret wrote: ↑Sat Feb 15, 2020 11:23 pmIt’s not though. It’s clear from the VAR still that the player who’s foot is “offside” is Jota.

It would appear that the answer to my question is “no, you can’t.”

Think you are getting confused, he wasn't given offside from a corner, it was from the pass following the corner.scouseclaret wrote: ↑Sat Feb 15, 2020 11:41 pmIt would appear that the answer to my question is “no, you can’t.”

Re: Can you be offside from a corner?
You can't be offside direct from a corner, but that exemption doesn't extend to second, third, fourth passes after the corner. You cannot be offside at the moment the corner is taken. You can be offside a split second later when someone else touches it.scouseclaret wrote: ↑Sat Feb 15, 2020 11:41 pmIt would appear that the answer to my question is “no, you can’t.”
Re: Can you be offside from a corner?
It’s taken me a while to get it but now I understand and will try and simplify the decision. Let’s say Westwood takes a short corner to McNeil. McNeil immediately passes it back to Westy before he has time to get onside. Well that is exactly what happened in this instance except that corner taker was only a fraction offside when the pass to him was made. By the time he received the ball he was clearly onside but at the time the pass to him was made he was fractionally offside. Hope that helps clarify things. You often used to get corner takers offside at short corners and this was just a weird version of that UTC

Re: Can you be offside from a corner?
There is no exemption for a corner. But it would be extremely hard to occupy an offside position with the ball coming in from essentially what is the goal line.

Re: Can you be offside from a corner?
Sorry I’ve got it now. I thought the line was being drawn through Jota’s foot. Didn’t see the corner taker’s as it kind of blends in against the linesman and ad boards.
Or maybe it’s just my crap eyesight!

The FIFA website states no offside from a corner, goal kick or throw in.KellyClaret wrote: ↑Sun Feb 16, 2020 8:06 amThere is no exemption for a corner. But it would be extremely hard to occupy an offside position with the ball coming in from essentially what is the goal line.

Re: Can you be offside from a corner?
Neither did I until seeing Stan Ternent doing his nut because a Burnley player was given offside from a goal kick - I didn't realise what he was complaining about. Perhaps fortunately, it was the lineman on the far side.KellyClaret wrote: ↑Sun Feb 16, 2020 9:03 amCompletely missed that, also didn't realise you couldn't be offisde from a goalkick.

Re: Can you be offside from a corner?
I think that's what Danny Ings was doing yesterday, trying to get onside.
He forgot he wasn't a Claret.

Re: Can you be offside from a corner?
We could discuss the ins and outs of the law all day but the fact is penalising a player for being a midges cock offside is taking the p!ss. The sooner we give decisions (right or wrong) back to the ref the better.
