Goal of the season (so far)

Post by ClaretMov » Sun Feb 16, 2020 9:25 am

J Rod v Man Utd

Vydra v Southampton

Mine is Vydra just for the technique of the chest control to take it past the first defender and the little chip to take it past the last defender and like J rod's a thunder bolt finish

Not bad for a anti football team

Great goals which actually matter or mean something in the context of a game, like the 2 mentioned above, are often pointed out and referred to, but imo it's something of a shame that Jayrod's ultimately meaningless strike against Chelsea at home is never even mentioned even though it was arguably as good if not better than either of those.

Vydras control (in the wind swirling) on his chest then to take that touch and bang it in with his left.foot

Pisses all over jays goal

The context of a goal is important, IMO. It could be argued that, with the pressure off and the game being effectively over, the Chelsea defence stood off and Jay thought, “Why not have a pop?” This might not have been the case had the game been finely balanced. Whilst his strike against Chelsea was a wonder to behold, because it didn’t mean as much as a winner away at Southampton, or the clincher at Old Trafford, it will naturally fall down the pecking order when people remember ‘great goals’.

Both stunning goals.

Had VAR not existed, Wood’s header v West Ham was sensational

As good as Vydra’s goal was I’ll personally savour JayRod’s more. It helped clinch a win away at OT. Something I’ve waited a lifetime to see. As I’m surrounded a MU supporting wife and good friends it will always be special, very special.

Vydra's was a great goal but Jay's was better.

Vydras was the winner, JRods was a clincher. I’ll just lean towards Vydras.

vydra, he controlled it, had to beat defenders, then shoot. Wonderful goal.

They both made me go 'wow!'

With Rodrigues, we have a player who can really shoot with power from distance and any position.

Both quality for their own reasons. With Vydra it was the technique to control the ball, nudge it past the defender and then finish. With Jay's it was the sheer cheekiness to try his luck from there in off the bar.

Not much between them.

Vydra for me. A lot more to do, in difficult conditions. Both excellent goals.

Where I live hardly anyone supports Rovers, it is either Burnley or United, so it has to be Jays goal at OT.

Jay's was a couple of clever one twos then a storming shot

Vydra's involved a tricky chest control from a distance pass, taking it past another defender then unleashing a similar sort of shot

For me, whilst Jay's goal had more meaning due to the opposition, Vydra's was technically better

I'd struggle to separate them, both sensational goals.

Bit harsh. Jays was quality, out of nowhere, at old Trafford after being a bit part player himself until then.

Both world class goals. As was Jays against Chelsea mentioned above.

Absolutely. Brilliant team goal. And absolutely love seeing a cross and header like that.

To be fair, there's more than one. What's the criteria; individual skill, team effort, importance to match, etc.

Technically, they were both great goals but, in the grand scheme of things, Vydra's goal will mean more to him.

His extended family, both here and back home, will be hyper-excited for him.

He hasn't been given many opportunities but he took the one yesterday with both hands and everyone could see what it meant to him and the rest of the team.

For me, he should be given an extended run in the first team. Given the half chance, he will score goals.

Don’t disagree it will have meant the world to Vydra and his family. But equally so for Jay. Especially given his dad was in the away end.

And even more so that both support Man Utd.

Truly our cup doth overflow with riches with these three to pick from ...

1) Jay's v United .... by a nose from
2) Vydra v Saints ..... by a neck from
3) Jay's v Chelsea ...

Both Jay and Vydra's goals were fantastic goals
worthy of 'Goal of the Month' on MOD albeit Jay's was second, I believe.

Vydra's will surely be a contender for GoM in February
and hopefully will win it.
I think those two goals may have sealed our stay in the top league
and two finer goals you will not see.

Jays v United will probably not be beaten because of where it was, the angle, the distance and the fact that it went off the bar....perfection tbh

Lots to choose from this season:
Hendrick at Brighton
Vydra at Southampton
Barnes at Wolves

Would discount Jay’s v Chelsea as it was a consolation goal though

A good goal is more than technical ability. It’s about it’s meaning.

Clinching a result at Old Trafford is always gonna be special... but a winning goal from a fringe player who has just proven his worth and pretty-much established the club for another season in the top flight edges it for me.

In fairness to Jay, it wasn't just the strike but his role in the build-up with Ashley Westwood and our Kiwi.

Clearly the three of them were players drafted in from a "proper football team" disguised in Burnley shirts.
