Re: ARTICLE: First goal for Benson in Grimsby win
It really does feel as if the investment in the youth teams is nearing payback.
We have Benson, Glennon, Koiki, Dunne, Goodridge and Richardson to name but a few. If only one of them makes it to the first team it shows the direction of travel, but they sre upgrades on the likes of Hewitt, Howieson etc who we all knew would fall short
just a small further upward tweak and we may be able to produce a genuine first team player every year or two. This, if achieved, will help us to compete the big pocket teams

A link to St. Pats page and the arrival of Oliver Younger. Includes a twitter interview.
Pats have a youtube page, I’ll keep an eye on him. They lost first up at home to Waterford without him.

Did we know they were going to fall short? I certainly didn’t and nor did anyone I knew at the club.Down_Rover wrote: ↑Mon Feb 17, 2020 4:13 pm

That's a pretty offensive comment about a rather complex issue.

What was that Australian lad called who made a few first team appearances, then went on loan to the A league? I think he was highly rated at one point.

Did we all know? I didn't for one and I still think potentially they were just there at the wrong time with the wrong people and that cost them. I thought Howieson, in particular, looked a real prospect when he was in the youth team.Down_Rover wrote: ↑Mon Feb 17, 2020 4:13 pmthey sre upgrades on the likes of Hewitt, Howieson etc who we all knew would fall short

Well I remember a thread on the old site about whether it was right to boo Hewitt on what I thought was his only first team start.dandeclaret wrote: ↑Tue Feb 18, 2020 7:16 amDid we know they were going to fall short? I certainly didn’t and nor did anyone I knew at the club.
Neither he or Howieson did better than cameos despite being around for quite a while and left in 2015 when first team squad was not the quality it is today.
All of this is detail. The point I am making is that the Youth development at the club continues to improve and, if a player comes through every year or two it helps the finnaces

See my comment above. In my view they were not up to the mark not just because I thought they werent good enough, but because the support network was not there. So I don't think we disagreeClaretTony wrote: ↑Tue Feb 18, 2020 11:25 amDid we all know? my main point is that we are in a much better position in that department

Re: ARTICLE: First goal for Benson in Grimsby win
Obviously it's pretty easy with 20:20 hindsight to assess it. Nobody's ever got anything wrong with that ability. Certainly at the time, with a few Youth internationals floating about, winning their youth league, and getting to the Semi Final of the FA youth cup, with a few notable scalps on the way, playing good football, with a mix of physicality, you wouldn't have found many (Let alone "All") who would have agreed with your assertion, either within the club, within the fan base, or within the wider footballing community.Down_Rover wrote: ↑Tue Feb 18, 2020 11:37 amWell I remember a thread on the old site about whether it was right to boo Hewitt on what I thought was his only first team start.
