The worst Burnley performance that you've witnessed live....
Re: The worst Burnley performance that you've witnessed live....
Hereford for me. I was numb. Crewe away 1987 last away game before Orient game and a win and our destiny was in our hands but the 90 mins we put in was almost as pitiful as Hereford.

The first two that spring to mind are the Gazza at Sheff Utd and the last game of the Cotterill era. They were bad!

I went to that game with my late father in law, Jack Clancy ! We got back to the Railway Club at Rosegrove for a pint, that days back page of the Evening Telegraph had a picture of a smiling Frank Casper underneath the banner headline " Casper - The plastic will suit us ! "
It had been pinned to the dartboard, and 3 " Arrows " were firmly embedded between Frank's eyes !!

Burnley v Rochdale. And this season's fresh in the memory spurs v Burnley...we rolled over for them. Though think we will spank em at Turf moor.
Re: The worst Burnley performance that you've witnessed live....
Like a few have said a lot of choices from the dark days.
Will go for the Rochdale game with them down to nine men also.
Terrible times supporting the Clarets.

There are 3 Rochdale games being mixed up here I think. NYD 1987 was absolutely dire. The 9 men defeat was I think 1989 and the Dave Williams game 1991.

Re: The worst Burnley performance that you've witnessed live....
I'd grown up in the 60s and was used to us being one of the better teams in the division; indeed it was a long time before I'd actually seen us get beat, so one that is forever etched on my memory 11th November 1967, away at West Brom.
It was rumoured the Scottish selectors were there to run the rule over the Burnley keeper - Harry Thomson.
We got battered 8-1.
My mate wrote to the club complaining that is was alright for the players and Manager, but we had to go to school and put up with all the p*** taking and the like.
Harry didn't play for Scotland (which is a shame really).

5-0 Home to Gillingham
7-2 Home to Sheffield Wednesday (Who were already relegated the previous week)
3-0 Away to Crewe, Boxing Day 2003, we had Graham Branch and Arthur Gnohere at Centre Back, for one of the goals they ran in to each other and left future Claret Steve Jones through on goal. It could and should've been a bigger scoreline.
5-0 Away to Blackburn, just because it was my first east-lancs derby and I was only 10, tough one to take at that age.

0-0 home to Luton under Cotterill in 2007 was the most bored I have ever been at a match if that counts.

Hard to argue with that... but Crewe has the worst night tag. It was over and I could not be consoled.
People forget we still needed Hutch to send Lincoln down instead of us, some of the first on the pitch at full time against Orient could not have known we were in fact safe.

I didn’t go to that (fortunately as it turned out) but it was a very very rare live on TV game. I was so excited the night before I couldn’t sleep and what an anti climax, we just didn’t turn up.

Glad that Luton game in 2007 is getting a mention. Absolutely the most boring game of football I’ve ever been to in my life. Was on with my mate who I hadn’t seen in years and don’t think we even discussed the game once.

Re: The worst Burnley performance that you've witnessed live....
My first away game was Hartlepool away in the early to mid 90s. I was very excited, and in the naivety of youth fully expected us to get 3 points. We got pumped 4-1 and I remember thinking "But, we're actually good at turf moor, who was that I just watched?"
Re: The worst Burnley performance that you've witnessed live....
Think this has to be up there. I attended with a Rochdale fan. We were rubbish.
Re: The worst Burnley performance that you've witnessed live....
Didn’t attend the Hereford 0-6 game which I am sure could be the worst low of the lot.

To add to those already mentioned:
2-0 defeat at Torquay 85/86. Lowest league gate at a Burnley match since WW1 fortunately
5-1 capitulation at Reading in 84/5 after leading at half time

Re: The worst Burnley performance that you've witnessed live....
Ps The 3-5 home defeat to Southend in 82 was not that bad a performance, just a bizarre game, although it did reveal the defensive frailties which cost us so dearly in the following season. We were 0-2 down after 10 minutes but stormed back to 2-2 before half time and Southend were down to 10 men. Only one result seemed possible but Derek Spence and Gary Nelson tore us apart in the first ten minutes of the second half and we went 5-2 down. This was one of only 2 defeats in the last 38 games of that season. It was really freakish. Normal service was resumed immediately afterwards!
Re: The worst Burnley performance that you've witnessed live....
Fulham away sometime in the 90's. 0-3? 0-4? Morgan at left back.

Won't be many people's worst, but Blackburn at home under Laws felt bloody awful.

Has anyone mentioned the 5-0 defeat away to Sheffield Wednesday in an FA Cup replay yet. One of less than a handful of games where I have left early

Southend away under the Cotterill winless run.

I was at that. The announcer at half time shouting "come on everyone, we're on our way to the semi-finals!!". Re: The worst Burnley performance that you've witnessed live....
That was a grim day all round. Took my wife and 18 month old daughter, they went round shopping. On returning to my car i stood in a pile of dog ****, brand new trainers. She spied me trying to scrape it off and refused to let me drive back with it in the car. It was deposited in the nearest bin and I had to drive back in my socks, not the safest option.Sheffield Claret wrote: ↑Tue Feb 18, 2020 7:19 pm0-4 at Chester in 1985 - the end of the glorious Buchan era.

I must be unlucky but I went to both the 8-1 thrashing by West Brom which would have been around early seventies and the 7-0 defeat by QPR

Re: The worst Burnley performance that you've witnessed live....
Perhaps I should have mentioned that in between those two away thrashings at Maine Rd. and Elland Rd., we played 3rd division Swindon in a 2nd replay of the semi final of the league cup at West Brom and lost 3-2 after going into the lead in extra time. As you say a tough time to be a Claret.warksclaret wrote: ↑Wed Feb 19, 2020 12:47 pmSilky-thanks for the dates. The late sixties was definitely not a good time to be a clarets fan

Re: The worst Burnley performance that you've witnessed live....
Don't really agree with this. They were highly unpredictable times. We had some real thrashings usually away from home, but also some big wins, e.g. the home thrashing of Leeds by a very young Burnley XI when Ralph Coates actually sat on the ball inviting then to come and get the ball off him.warksclaret wrote: ↑Wed Feb 19, 2020 12:47 pmSilky-thanks for the dates. Bear in mind we were in the top flight throughout this period, so to describe it as "not a good time" compared to the late 70s and virtually all the 80s strikes me as inaccurate.
Maybe it's because I was a young teenager, but I really enjoyed the late sixties, and had some great away trips despite the results.
If I recall correctly we beat Leeds 5-1 at home but lost 6-1 away with Eddie Gray tearing us apart!!!

4-0 down to Bristol Rovers at halftime on a Tuesday night with Tommy Hutch as sweeper. I hitchhiked there and back from London.

Hereford 6-0 drubbing was worst performance for me. It came at a time when I was thinking we might have turned a corner but January 87 was very, very bleak and the unthinkable started to cross my mind.

I remember going to Hereford and being very, very easily rolled over 3-0 around 1990 ish and we suffered the same scoreline away at Orient a year or so earlier when a certain David Jones (no not THAT one, but THAT one!) made his debut. I was actually rather optimistic when I saw him in the warm up. Then.......We really were garbage back then!
Re: The worst Burnley performance that you've witnessed live....
I was working in London back then, remember asking someone who he was when warming up, they didn't now.Dark Cloud wrote: ↑Thu Feb 20, 2020 6:25 pmI remember going to Hereford and being very, very easily rolled over 3-0 around 1990 ish and we suffered the same scoreline away at Orient a year or so earlier when a certain David Jones (no not THAT one, but THAT one!) made his debut. Maybe not that bad in the scheme of some of the terrible games I saw but Fulham away just after Laws had taken over was a shocker.
Lost 3-0. We were playing two left backs (Fox and Edgar maybe) and I'm not sure if we ever had an attack. The Burnley fans sang Laws' name throughout the match but it was pretty clear at that point that we were going down.

I remember going to Craven Cottage around 1998 with a couple of Fulham supporting mates from work, watching from the home stand behind one of the goals. We lost 4-0 but it could have been a lot more, we were unbelievably bad. They never let me forget it.

3-0 away to blackpool in the ******* down rain when they hadn't even built a proper stand. Sand for floors and no roof. Night game.
